Frustrating indeed Threeps. At this point, I’d even consider throwing Harry Redknapp in who will at least just let then play. It’s worth just throwing the dice now as we won’t be winning the WC under Southgate. We can worry about a long term manager after the WC. Will not happen though.

15th June 2022 at 7:58 am #196635Terrible performance and result Southgate will take us to Qatar and I suspect be gone not long afterwards. Whoever was in charge England wouldn’t win the World Cup. Where England go after Southgate’s is anyone’s guess it’s certainly not with Dyche imo Howe is an option maybe but I doubt he would want it and we would probably need to cast our net further afield.

15th June 2022 at 8:11 am #196637I don’t think there are many sides with better squads than England. Brazil are the favourites but they have a good few players who wouldn’t get near our squad. Fred, Telles, Richarlison, Dani Alves etc. France, second favourites are in the same boat as England. Bottom with 2 points, albeit from an easier group than England. Even looking at Belgium’s team with Batshuayi, Lukaku, Hazard. Even Adnan Januzaj still gets games for them. I’m not saying we’d win it with a better manager but we stand as good a chance as any. For me, only France have a better squad but they’re in as much a crisis as England.

15th June 2022 at 8:19 am #196638I think Spain or Germany will win it as they have the best managers. Again, I don’t think either squad is any better than England’s.

15th June 2022 at 8:50 am #196639Southgate on 4 nil Hungary defeat.
“We picked a young team with energy and when the game started to go against them it started to look that way. That’s my responsibility in the end. I thought at half-time we needed to go for the game.
“We made changes that gave us a little bit more of an attacking impetus but then we were a little bit more open as well and, in the end, you’re pushing and we’ve got so many attacking players on the pitch that we left ourselves wide open.
“So I’ve just said to the players there that across the four match that’s my responsibility. I tried to balance looking at new players, tried to rest players that we couldn’t keep flogging our more experienced and better players but, in the end, the teams I’ve selected haven’t been strong enough to get the results in the two Hungary games.”

15th June 2022 at 8:54 am #196640I would throw Potter’s name into the mix for England too but again I doubt he would want it currently either.

15th June 2022 at 9:14 am #196641You might be right Nine re Potter. He’s probably be my first choice. Would someone really turn down the England job to stay at Brighton though? (no disrespect to Brighton). Maybe he would. The PL has arguably become so big now that the England job is no longer the pinnacle of a coach’s career.
I’d imagine Howe will be available as soon as a big name becomes available who Newcastle feel they could attract. Almost pointless even speculating though as we all know Southgate will be there until at least Christmas, before which anything could happen re potential names in the hat.

15th June 2022 at 9:17 am #196642Threeps, which country is yours btw? I’d always assumed you were English, or at least British or Irish based on your writing. You’re based in Germany, right?

15th June 2022 at 9:24 am #196644England under Southgate are pretty much Utd under Ole.
Boring football but somehow still get to latter stages of tournaments. Individual moments save the manager repeatedly, rather than tactical nous. Players who play great elsewhere come in and suddenly look poor. Harry Maguire. Eventually, their luck runs out and they get a hammering at home to a much lesser side (0-4 Hungary & 0-5 Liverpool) 😁. Joking aside, there are many similarities. In both cases, you kind of always know the manager is not good enough but (until now) they’ve not really done enough wrong to warrant being sacked.

15th June 2022 at 10:22 am #196645Spot on Ed. You could just never imagine either manager, Solskjaer or Southgate, lifting a dressing room into battle. They should only have ever been considered interim managers, neither was ever good enough to take their respective jobs permanently. And, like the Utd board, it’s now awkward for the FA who don’t know what to do with a WC coming in the winter. Perhaps Ralf Rangnick is available from Austria? 😁

15th June 2022 at 10:55 am #196646Ed, Northern Irelend. Hence I don’t really care much for international tournaments. If we get there the most entertaining part is our fans! But yes based in Germany.

15th June 2022 at 3:53 pm #196649Yeah I know I just put it up for a giggle with Adlab. In fact I find it hilarious, it’s like La Liga are throwing a strop because they couldn’t get their fancy new toy. City and PSG may or may not be doing things unfairly but the top La Liga teams are not exactly the bastions of fair play are they? La Liga are just upset they couldn’t get the next big thing in order to maximise their subscription base.

15th June 2022 at 4:22 pm #196650Here we go again with that racist fascist bastard ( excuse the language). He never mentions the financial impropriety of Real and Barcelona. He cannot stand the fact that Spain do not dominate.
We have been very careful to be within FFP.
He is another Boris Johnson all puff and populist rhetoric and no substance.
For interest you should look up his background.

15th June 2022 at 4:35 pm #196652Just on a more sane level we have just sold an Irish keeper to Southampton for £12m. That brings our net spend in this window so far at £39m. I also believe we will have one or two more in and out.
