Adlab…re Grealish…..I think he has to make the mark early next season or face more time on the bench…he is capable but he has to to it.He will not be a frolic goal scorer either but could be a really good assist player. Haaland must be thinking..I have KDC, Mahrez Grealish Foden Bernado and Gundoghan all giving me chances…we will see if that works out

4th June 2022 at 8:36 pm #196516I’ll barely give this the time of the day let alone even consider a thread, but so glad to have worked and avoid (from reading online comments elsewhere) the boredom to say the least earlier this evening. Same old England…..

5th June 2022 at 9:36 am #196519Inept performance, no other words for it. Not interested in excuses . The players need to ask themselves
1. What are we here for
2. If they prefer to go on holiday, they should say so before the start because that is what it looked like to me, particularly first half, where they could not care less attitude_____________________________

5th June 2022 at 10:56 am #196521I think the players were just mentally exhausted after a tough season. They really do need more of a break. Before they know it they will be on long pre-season tours and for City and Liverpool there is the Community Shield. Too much. Top athletes need to rest.

5th June 2022 at 11:02 am #196522The players are tired and they want out, it’s as simple as that. I suspect they reluctantly committed themselves. In my eyes, it’s an insignificant competition – glorified friendlies and for bragging rights.
Certain players have been involved in their domestic league and other competitions, e.g. Europe and one example Jarrod Bowen.
It won’t be too long before the new season starts, almost 8 weeks from today. Let these guys recuperate properly. They are not machines and they need family time and time away.
People can’t make the point how we were so close to winning a tournament last year, but for me, the manager lacks certain qualities and characteristics to motivate a set of players and get them actively interested. Some people already from the start have smelt the coffee and turn the other cheek!

5th June 2022 at 11:52 am #196523I have no sympathy for players at this level, they are well looked after and certainly no financial worries, like many will have , say, be doing hazardous jobs day in day out. It is about mentality and self motivation . What must they be thinking when they walk on the pitch, “sooner this game over the better”? I loved my job, which at times was physical and long hours but my mindset was always. “the day I do not enjoy getting out of bed and going to work is the day I retire>.” I was 76 then. What about the Trawlermen going out to see to put fish on our plate…do they say…..too hot to day!!! What about a Surgeon, Nurse, the list is long. Everyone gets tired, everyone has off days but this about excuses given to a pampered elite. Some of these players are young and you would think every game would be exciting for them but you would not tell from watching them, they are simply in the wrong job. I know it may sound harsh but you have to wonder why a team of, supposedly, talent, run around like headless chickens and look as if they could not care less. Often second best in challenges, lost most of the second balls and hoofing it into no man’s land.
I can see better on the local park Hungray deserved the win The performance level was so poor it was noticeable after 15 minutes and gradually became worse for the rest of the half. Changes should have been made much earlier. OH!! for a good moan to get over it. Mancini will motivate his players that is for sure_____________________________

5th June 2022 at 12:41 pm #196524Brian, good counter-argument to be fair and I’m with you. There’s often been that comparison to ‘the ordinary man on the street’ who’s averaging 8-12 hours per day.
Unfortunately for some folk, they can’t particularly choose what they want to do, but essentially for survival.
Footballers more than ever at the top end are spoilt rotten. I also believe more than ever unless the tournament is an International one at the very high end such the World Cup and the Euros, I can’t see players realistically showing the same level of enthusiasm as the Premier League. They may as well be journeymen on these type of tournaments, i.e. the nations league.
The level of intensity, demands, stakes and how each game more than ever is under is stripped under the microscope can be challenging for a player to uphold mentally and physically. They are humans no matter what bubble they’re in and will need time to recharge themselves. That I believe in so that they are ready and fully focused for the new season and we as fans get the best out of them.

5th June 2022 at 1:26 pm #196525Ye very valid points brian mate
Football is a disgrace these days. No one held accountable for anything and riddled with corruption. Itβs up there with the church for scandals and corruption.
The World Cup is a prime example. Absolutely disgusting π€’

5th June 2022 at 1:56 pm #196526As always with England, the issues are quite often cultural ones as to why they always flatter to deceive on the international stage. Indeed just looking at the salaries of some of those Hungary players – I think some of them seem to earn in a year what some England players earn in a week. The Hungarian players I suspect very much know where they’ve come from and never take anything for granted. We on the other hand worship our own players before they’ve even barely made a mark on the game, whilst paying them fortunes. It would be nice to see some football journalists really go at players for such performances but they best not upset them hey.

5th June 2022 at 2:09 pm #196527Added to that, even if you look at countries with more wealthy footballers more similar to our own – Germany, France, Spain & Italy – all have won major trophies in recent memory. We have not. There’s got be a cultural reason there. Are we simply more of an individualistic culture? As I said above, given how we worship individuals/celebrities, I’d say there’s something in that.

Nike, I understand your point but as for coming under pressure, well, the only pressure they should consider is their own, to get the job they are supposed to do done. The pressure from sources such as the media should not count, because, if you are strong enough you will ignore them. Then again, some will actively seek self promotion through them. Another reason I have no sympathy for them
I suppose nothing will change and it could possibly get worse for the game so I hope we can still be entertained by our football “gods” a little while longer. Transfer fees will get higher, wages and perks higher and agents make even more and last the media executives earn a mint commenting on somebody else’s work!!!!
Cheers from the old fogey!!!

5th June 2022 at 3:52 pm #196529Some great posts. For my sins I am a volunteer debt adviser at Citizens Advice and some of the people I help are in debt, cannot make ends meet and end up with genuine anxiety and depression.
Multimillionaire footballers do have pressures but believe me there is no comparison.
Last week I was helping a client with two kids, on benefits and Β£20,000 of debts, not knowing where to turn. She owed the equivalent of half a day’s wages of a EPL player. That’s pressure. What is wrong is too much football. That’s the pressure. Athletes need to rest and recover.

5th June 2022 at 5:24 pm #196530Adlab, I was 6 years ago a Volunteer at the DWP helping families process new claims. I was also offering them employment support. It always brings home that actually, there are people worse off than you.
I don’t know what sort of wages they pay in Europe aside certain clubs we’re familiar with. What I do notice is more hunger and maybe more regard towards their nation.
We just don’t see that passion anymore in our own players like Stuart Pearce or Bryan Robson.
I don’t know. Do we blame the players if the industry more than ever is filled with wealth and there’s so much more player power, advertising, marketing and media influence?
In all honesty too being a Liverpool fan, I’d like to think the players are ready to challenge once again for the big trophies next season and are as strong as ever physically and mentally, but that can essentially really be if they’ve been allowed to rest and recover properly after playing 60+ matches.
Just my overall view.

5th June 2022 at 6:03 pm #196531Nil, I’m sure the England players have played a lot more football this season than other countries maybe have, so I can give the players some leeway at this moment after a long season. However, even in normal times, England always lack something that is possessed by their continental neighbours – as I say, players of Spain, Germany, Italy & France all earn big bucks yet their countries still continue to win tournaments. We don’t. For me England lack that togetherness. It has got a bit better in recent years after the almost debacle and hype of the so called generation. But even so, there’s still something missing there.
Much was made of reaching the Euro final last year, but was it not just that Southgate simply made England difficult to beat. I don’t think they were particularly convincing in the tournament and in the final although they went out on penalties, Italy dominated much of the match and looked a different class to them.
I just think our culture revolves around the Premier league and hypes up our individual players. And many influential social media accounts now lament and mock the annoyance of international breaks during the season. Until all that stops, we’ll continue to fall.
