When I was doing my Economics degree all those years ago the one thing that the vast majority of economists agreed upon is that you can’t buck the market. Firms, in our case football clubs will always find a way to get round restrictions. Various governments have tried pay freezes over the years. They never lasted. The market just returned to where it was. If you look at almost every league each is dominated by those with the biggest resources.
I can remember all those years ago United making a record buy – Albert Quixall. £45,000 I think it was. At that time United had the greatest resources.

Ffp or variants will just make the richer clubs richer and not the opposite.
And frankly any rules brought out are just intended to benefit the big European clubs and penalise the English.

Liverpool are now in an enviable position that the world class base is there and it’s now not going to cost the earth to build on it as you simply need players to fit the system rather than needing to spend like City to compete.

City, on the other hand, are in the enviable position that, whilst they need big signings, the massive (and smart) spending up until now allows them to simply disregard the ones who don’t cut it while selling them off for huge fees which finances further big buys. City will now for a good few years be able to boast about a “low (net) spend” which is merely a case of selling off players they don’t feel are good enough from their huge squad, thanks to years of big spending.

Quixall joined Manchester United in September 1958 for a then British record fee of £45,000, one of Matt Busby’s key recruits in building a new team in the aftermath of the Munich air disaster, which had killed eight players and ended the careers of two others on 6 February that year.[4] After seven games without a win for United, Quixall eventually helped the team go on a run of only two losses in 23 matches to end the season as runners-up in the First Division.[3] Quixall’s only medal with the club was the 1963 FA Cup. Altogether, he scored 56 goals in 184 games for the Red Devils.[5] Manchester United midfielder Bobby Charlton recalled in his autobiography that Quixall played a key role in many of his goals in this era. He noted that Quixall “played a significant role in my rush of goals. When I broke through an offside trap, often it was to get on to the end of one of Albert’s perfectly placed passes”.[6]

            And for interest

            Value of £45,000 from 1958 to 2022
£45,000 in 1958 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £1,120,234.61 today, an increase of £1,075,234.61 over 64 years. The pound had an average inflation rate of 5.15% per year between 1958 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 2,389.41%.

This means that today’s prices are 24.89 times higher than average prices since 1958, according to the Office for National Statistics composite price index. A pound today only buys 4.017% of what it could buy back then.

The inflation rate in 1958 was 3.20%. The current inflation rate compared to last year is now 2.27%. If this number holds, £45,000 today will be equivalent in buying power to £46,019.91 next year.

We paid £100m for Grealish. That is the current market!

I have to agree Ed about Salah. His stats are outstanding but I think he lacks that big game influence to really establish himself as an all time great. For example, Drogba scored 9 goals I think in 10 finals whereas Salah I think has scored 1 goal in 9 finals.

Sean..I would not disagree with what you have said but all I would say is, you cannot control football in a fair and equitable way, somebody is always going to have more than others. You could also compare a top team with money with a bottom with money but not as much but the difference is there, so where is the line drawn. A more realistic view is what Mikus has suggested in that it is more about other factors. Money will always be an issue but I think we have to be careful not to over state it. If you take City out of the equation…who is the next one to have the same tag?
…and so it goes on. For me evolution will happen to the game, parts we will like, parts we will hate but will all be driven by money from whatever source and do not forget the TV and Media companies will have a big say as well. Interesting debate, good to read

Mane is world class mikuis. Always produces in big games. He’s an absolute beast. He’s irreplaceable but maybe Klopp will find away. Will Diaz get 20 goals a season. Interesting to see were we go from here. It’s going to extremely difficult to compete with season next season

Good point about Salah and finals. Also we were in 3 finals and scored no goals

Excellent point about Klopp and systems Ed. I still think mane will be a huge success with munich as that were he be going it looks like

Real pisser of a week with losing a final we should be winning and we won’t get a better chance for years then hearing mane wants out. Deflating

I like Mane Sean, but I’m just not sure whether he can be deemed world class. I hold the bar very high for such a category and think you have to be able to do things few others can. To be fair to that front 3, I think one of the problems over recent years is the amount of games they’ve had to play. They’re getting absolutely used to the nth degree at both club and international level so I think their form has been fluctuating with that. Diaz has been a very exciting signing but he needs perfecting so hopefully a pre season with Klopp will help. Personally I think we need signings in midfield and up top.

Regarding the money in the game, the issue I have with the super rich clubs are the inflatory effect they’re having on player wages. Added to that the competitive effect now on all clubs who are desperate to stay ahead of their rivals. And we have to accept some of this impetus comes from the fans who demand big players. So wages are going to keep going through the roof. I think a salary cap has been called for by some, but whilst the fans bemoan the price of football, they are ultimately I think more interested in signing big players to get one up on their rivals, so they’ll keep sustaining all this. I also think social media has played a part over recent decades and I think its rewired peoples brains to become addicted to waiting for the next big signing for bragging rights.

Ye I know world class gets thrown about a bit but mane is probs one of best players around in his position or positions

We need a midfielder and forward defo mate

Who they are I’ve no idea.

Mikus. The inflationary effect is enormous. When we spend £100m on Grealish it says everything. To me he is a very good player but world class? I don’t think so. Is he better than what we have? No.
So what must Foden be worth?
It means that say a bid is made for Declan Rice, who I think is good but not world class, what would you have to pay?
                            Too much!

Hello, Hello, thank you all for your best wishes.

I’ve had a bit of a difficult time and there’s still a bit of a bumpy road ahead but with hard work I’ll get there in the end.

As for transfers there’s a lot of nonsense doing the rounds currently with the occasional story having some credibility.

As for FFP etc if and when the Football bodies set the rules Clubs have to follow them or face the consequences.

Special thanks to the Ed in helping me get back on FD again. Cheers All 9’s

Adlab, the only reason Grealish went for £100m was because that was his buy out clause and Pep wanted him.

The way I see it is a near enough correlation involving Pep and Klopp that they hold something in common in being able to essentially upskill and take a player to new heights and another level.

I see that straight away in VVD and Sadio. Also, think back to Firmino actually being Brendan’s signing and Divock Origi and he’s been able to get beyond a Tune out of them. Attitude, Application, Commitment, Synergy/Togetherness. Along with Belief and Desire (no limits). This has what has made Man City Man City and Liverpool Liverpool under these managers.

Mane has one every single trophy available. He’s in the twilight of his career unfortunately, but during 18/19 and 19/20, he was at his peak and without a doubt World Class.

Adlab…Grealish like others with big tags there is always a flip side, this being the selling club who set the price, OK City have been able to afford it but there are also occasions when we have walked away. I do not blame the selling clubs for the unrealistic prices they set because that becomes the market price. To me, the price is a two way thing and not exclusive to City…other clubs spend, we have a relatively small squad so it is not as if we have a monopoly on every player that is available. The whole business is unsatisfactory though but I cannot see how it will change unless the authorities put “caps” on player movements, then , we would see a breakaway
