Tbh Tunisia are probably bottom championship class. Too much reliance on Kane as expected, Southgate definitely needs to make about 4 changes to improve the team,

19th June 2018 at 5:50 am #22933Reports suggesting Dele is injured… so, should we start with Lofty, who was pretty decent when he came on last night, or Rashford/Wellbeck? I’m inclined to go with Lofty to be honest, it might only be Panama, but I think he earned the right to be fair, along with Rose for Young, more attacking threat and let’s face it, they’re going to play like Tunisia Part II.
Also give serious consideration to Rashford/Wellbeck over Sterling too… rest of the team picks itself (although if there was somebody to replace Walker I’d think about that too). Would even consider moving him up to Wingback and bring in Cahill but, without trying to sound too biased, that would be harsh on Trippier, who was not the worst England player by a long shot…

19th June 2018 at 7:09 am #22934I think overall it was a good start. Alli should have been replaced at half time is my only criticism. He was clearly injured. Changes? Possibly. Nothing dramatic though. Might even start with the same eleven subject to Alli.

19th June 2018 at 10:20 am #22935Anonymousdespite only scoring the one goal i was very impressed with england in the first half. created a lot of chances but were just wasteful. second half seemed more like same old england. very slow and negative, no movement, no ideas. that was until the changes were made. both rashford and loftus cheek tried to make things happen. i dont think rashford was particularly successful with it but he at least gave it a go. RLC was very good, ran at players, passed it well, moved the ball quickly. on another day england would’ve won comfortably whether through lingard putting the chances away or the ref doing his job and giving a number of penalties.
i have seen it countless times with spurs, when you have a player like harry kane in your team, you always have a chance of winning.

19th June 2018 at 12:37 pm #22936Walker is not a central defender but heβs probably the best right sided wing back in Europe. I also think a left footed Danny Rose would be better suited to the left wing back role.

19th June 2018 at 1:55 pm #22937Canβt say Iβm really enjoying The World Cup, itβs a divathon. The diving is disgraceful. Just watching Columbia v Japan & Falcao must be going off the theory if he dives to the ground enough the ref will fall for it eventually. What a surprise he did & Columbia score from the free kick. Iβm trying to get some mates into football but they are rugby league &/or boxing fans & they wonβt even bother watching snippets of it any more. In boxing/league the players try to hide the pain from their opposition whereas in football players spend half their time feigning injury to get an advantage. Call it gamesmanship, experience or whatever, itβs nithibg but a blight on the game IMO.

19th June 2018 at 4:27 pm #22939Good experience for a very young and inexperienced squad – many of whom haven’t been to a tournament before.
thought Kane was a bit fortunate but you have to be in the right position to be able to score and that’s a knack in itself.
Sterling was dreadful, and so was Alli, and so was Maguire. But I think the only one i’d change for the next match is to play Cheek in place of Alli – who looked injured.
I think if Maguire keeps setting up opposition attacks in the next game then drop him. The lack of ability of players to run with the ball almost means we are stuck with Sterling unfortunately

19th June 2018 at 6:54 pm #22940Oz yob…I am a bit like you, just cannot get into it at all. The newer teams appear to have learned about stopping the game by any means rather than play football, which some can do, so, why do they not progress from there instead of trying to play rugby at the same time. It is spoiling the game. As to England, I was not expecting much but they got through by playing a 90 minute game. Panama will be different, we need to be very alert, they are quicker than Tunisia. I would not make any changes, although Ali appears to be injured, I would put Loftus -Cheek in ,Strong lad and capable. I am unsure about Lingard but on his game he fits team well. Sterling, I would keep, I know very well he will miss again and again but he is a threat and he can score goals. The only thing I am not happy about is playing Walker out of position, he cannot play CB, Pep would not use him unless in an emergancy at CB. Henderson played very well, we were sadly lacking in midfield and he just about held it together for us. A young team, they have to learn quicker at this level

19th June 2018 at 9:36 pm #22942Brian Maybe weβve both been a bit spoilt with proper football recently mate & itβs hard to see this style again, imagine being a manu fan & having it every week ?.
I do think Sterling should stay in the England 11, he has that speed & ability to bring out something to break a game open. Regardless I canβt see them going much past the group stages unfortunately, just not enough quality, much like my Aussies who I canβt see getting past the group stages._____________________________

20th June 2018 at 8:24 am #22943Oz – I think you’re being a little unfair to England and the style they play I wouldn’t compare to Man Utd’s style at all. I think they at least attempt tp play decent football, unlike a lot of teams in this tournament. I thought we did ok the other night, and one thing that did show up was that how ever much we may think the likes of Alli and Sterling like to dive, they are amateurs at it compared to many other countries. Don’t know if anyone saw the Columbia game, but Falcao took it to ridiculous levels. Has anyone actually been booked yet for diving?
Despite all that, I am enjoying the tournament. There have been some wonderful goals, some surprise results, and England haven’t depressed the whole country yet!

20th June 2018 at 8:29 am #22944My changes for the next game would be Rose in for Young, and that’s it. While Sterling was poor vthe other night, his pace should frighten Panama, and I think Rashford can be more effective coming off the bench. If Alli is unfit, then play RLC.
I’m at England v Australia cricket at Old Trafford on Sunday at the same time the football is on. Which will be more one-sided???

20th June 2018 at 9:42 am #22948Hightown I dunno if you mixed me up with someone else or misread what I said but Brian & I were talking about the anti football in general, not England. My only comment regarding England was I think Sterling should play next up as he has the speed & ability to change a game & I donβt think they have the quality to go far in the competition. Read my post a couple of days ago & I actually mentioned Falcao & his diving.
As for the cricket mate, us Aussies are dead set rubbish these days so Iβd be picking that as being 1 sides. As far as I can tell cricket is heading the way of Rugby Union in Oz where no one really gives a toss about it. Maybe itβs jist because we are poop at both so no one is interested._____________________________

20th June 2018 at 10:28 am #22949Hightown. Agree entirely. I wouldnt make many changes. Rose for Young. Young is a good crosser but too slow for this system. I would be tempted to play a front three of Sterling Kane and Rashford with Sterling a little deeper. We probably dont need three at the back either. I just think of the way City and Liverpool play. Possession and pace.

20th June 2018 at 4:22 pm #22950Sorry, Oz, I thought your first sentence in your post at 9.36pm last night was referring to England, but it was about the tournament in general, was it? Sorry for any misunderstanding. But I still think the footy has been pretty good on the whole, with the odd exception.
Adlab – I think Young’s problem is being right footed as a wing back, and constantly having to cut back. We had a similar issue at Anfield when we had Milner at left back. He overall did an excellent job there, but he slowed down our attacks by having to cut back every time. We’ve seen the difference now we have Robertson there.

20th June 2018 at 4:53 pm #22951Notice the referees are from here there and everywhere yet not one from the best league in the world.

20th June 2018 at 6:18 pm #22952I think the refereeing so far has been pretty good aside form the pens not given for the fouls on Kane. Premiership refs are shocking as we all know.

20th June 2018 at 7:25 pm #22953The “minnows” of the tournement have put up a good show. Skill and tactical levels much higher than previous WCs, this has surprised the bigger teams. Unfortunately the “theatre” has also enhanced there game, the refeereeing has not helped and of the games I have watched not seen anybody booked for diving or wrestling. Refs not strong enough, fearing political kick back??? I do not know but for WC it should be better

20th June 2018 at 7:27 pm #22954Big J.. read on a couple of places, to VAR that Harry wrestle, the Ref(s) need to VAR the whole “corner kick” and by all accounts there was a very blatant shove by Stones nano-seconds before, meaning they would have got the free-kick first before Harry got the Pen… I think basically the refs kinda went “1-1” in their minds and let play continue… haven’t been arsed to find a reply though to see about Stones….
