Yes I didn’t see a bench of game changers on the bench because England doesn’t have them ( few sides do). The reality is Croatia has a very experienced side and a clever midfield which largely came good in the second half – it was painful to watch the game being taken away from England but we came short up against a better side.

jim – below are the references i have made to sterling during the world cup (before your hissy fit anyway). you will see that whilst i regularly criticised sterling i also regularly criticised lingard and alli. i suppose that means i’m biased against man u and spurs as well. i was also critical of rashford – another man u player – and vardy. suppose i’m biased against leicester as well. or i couldnt give a shit who someone plays for and will criticise them if i feel they deserve it.

3rd July – Lingard sterling and alli all been poor. Right to take alli off. Didn’t look fit and gave the ball away a lot. Not sure why Lingard and sterling just can’t do anything right when they are in a good position.

4th july – the problem for kane is alli lingard and sterling are all massively underperforming.
Later in the same post – alli lingard and sterling really need to step up, if they are given another chance.

7th july – Sterling is just awful for England.

11th july – what he needs is the support players of alli, sterling and lingard to up their games and get the ball to him so he doesnt have to drop deep to win the ball, or hold it up

11th july – I don’t care what people say about sterling’s running; on the ball he was useless again. Problem is, rashford was even worse.

Come on cyber chums, let’s not fall out with a coulda woulda shoulda debate. We got further than I think most of us thought, started off strong and perhaps should have had one or two more before half-time, then I think experience told. Croatia played smarter football in the 2nd half and extra time, and overall deserved to win.</ You are an Aussie Kylie sweetie!

My final thought on this current England situation means that I have to (unfortunately) borrow from and slightly twist the words of a Tory politician – Southgate polished a t@rd brilliantly and got to within 80 odd minutes of a World Cup Final. Not bad really.

adlab – i think kane had a decent tournament. unfortunately he wasnt given any service throughout and pretty much ended up playing as a midfielder to try and get the ball forward.

alli had a poor tournament which went along with his poor season for spurs. however he has the ability to just pop up with a goal like he did against sweden which took a lot of pressure off the team. i have been critical off alli several times over the last few weeks.

Several players fell short last night and haven’t really played to their true capabilities over the whole tournament imo.

We’ve struggled for goals from open play across the whole tournament and we sadly don’t have a player of Modric’s ability and you wonder what might have been had Kane crossed the ball for Sterling in the first half. Our ball retention and passing also didn’t stand up to scrutiny against better opposition.

Trippier was England player of the tournament for me and not far behind were Maguire and Pickford. Southgate did a great job in making the most of what he had and turned them into a team that were greater than the individual parts.

Plenty to be proud of imo and a great foundation on which to build a team to challenge at the Euros in 2 years time.
