3rd July 2018 at 10:16 pm #23564Disgusting from Colombia. Horrible side
Thought both teams were terrible. This is the worst England team in a longtime but could still go further. Some very average players but great team spirit
Huge win and happy for Southgate. This squad seems quite United.
Enjoy that guys. Great win

3rd July 2018 at 10:23 pm #23566Haha, I was a month old when we won the world cup. I can’t remember much tbh π since then we have completely bottled every tournament we have entered often with much better sides than this one. But we are through to the quarters. One game at the time.

3rd July 2018 at 11:11 pm #23569Jim I was out watching the game tonight with my Dad. He was over visiting us in Stockholm for a couple of weeks. We were in a Swedish sports bar and they were absolutely hammering us all night “England’s going home… They’re going home…” etc ?. A long time since I’ve felt the joy of winning that shootout and jumping up amongst the silence. This Sweden v England quarters is massive for me. Living here, I’ll never hear the end of it if we lose. Really not looking forward to Saturday… Not read through tonight’s posts yet. Will catch up in the morning

4th July 2018 at 7:16 am #23570AnonymousSomehow this world cup fixtures is a puzzle. You have all the best teams meeting each other before the final while you have the other group of very weak teams and one of them is going to be in the final.

4th July 2018 at 7:59 am #23572Nice one Ed, Moos I dissagree. Germany and Spain went out to so called lesser opposition they would have been on England’s side of the draw. That makes one side of the draw now look easier than the other. Jim

4th July 2018 at 8:55 am #23573Completely agree Jim. You add Germany and Spain to that side and it looks much more balanced.

4th July 2018 at 9:35 am #23574Is this the worst England team in decades?
Yet they could really push on. They get to the semi final and itβs a huge , no matter who they have played

4th July 2018 at 10:04 am #23575Can’t dissagree Sean, the only stand out player we have really is Kane.

4th July 2018 at 11:04 am #23576This side isn’t a patch on some of the sides we’ve been able to put out over the last few decades and beyond but we didn’t win a thing with any of those sides. This side has arguably already shown more grit and passion than any of its predecessors. Individual stars don’t always make great teams.

4th July 2018 at 11:36 am #23577Agree with that ed.
Real fighting spirit and you could see what it means to these guys
They gave everything last night. It was a horrible battle againest a horrible team. They dug in and a great win
The team seems really United. Southgate comes across really well.

4th July 2018 at 11:51 am #23578This is a TEAM with a team ethic. Previously it wax a group of individuals. You could pick on any player including Kane and say ….”not as good as” but this team is much more than the sum of its parts. We could beat Sweden and go to the semi final. Then who knows?

4th July 2018 at 1:54 pm #23579Bloody hell, am I hot!!! (So hot, I reckon Belinda would go for it!)
Saw the result this morning, and saw about 10 minutes, extra-time and peno’s.
I reckon Pickford had his spider-man pants on!!!
Onwards and upwards!! Still waiting to Harry, Ali and Sterling to show-up (I know Harry’s got 6, but he isn’t pulling up trees like we all know he can, Ali’s being played far too deep, and Sterling…. enough has been said already).

4th July 2018 at 2:05 pm #23580Anonymouschucky – the problem for kane is alli lingard and sterling are all massively underperforming and when vardy came on to support kane he was completely anonymous. kane therefore drops deep and sets up the 3 support players who then completely fuck it every time.
cannot believe a team that has got to the 1/4 finals can be so poor going forward and provided zero support for the best striker in the world right now.
what i will say though is the togetherness of this team is very impressive. was a little disappointed to see henderson and lingard take the bait from the colombian players but on the whole the players were mentally very strong and they proved that with their penalties. none of them looked phased. henderson’s penalty was not a bad one at all, it was a great save from ospina. hopefully we will see some more fluidity against sweden. alli lingard and sterling really need to step up, if they are given another chance.

4th July 2018 at 3:21 pm #23582I think Lingard plays by his temperament which is unpredictable, not so good for team games. Sterling is about lack of composure, he will always have and create panic in defences but he needs that bit more to make it pay. A good team player though. I think the difference between the two is the way Utd and City use them in Club football not translated at this level

4th July 2018 at 5:56 pm #23589Lingard was pretty poor last night but I think both him and Sterling have been getting in the right positions and making good runs. Alli just doesn’t look fit to me. Sterling needs more chances to score than this side will ever give him but he makes decent runs. Lingard has scored by far our best goal so far and is well known for doing it on the big stage so I’d keep him in without doubt and that’s not the Utd fan in me talking.
I think Alli Sterling and Lingard all are capable of much more. All 3 are known to go down too easily, sadly. They all have decent scoring records for their clubs. I just think none of them can play that killer pass which we’re often lacking in the final third.
I’d still like to have seen Rashford given longer than he was yesterday. Why Vardy keeps getting minutes is beyond me. Rashford almodt always lifts a game when he comes off the bench and we needed something different after falling behind

4th July 2018 at 6:07 pm #23591We need something different full stop. This team seems unlikely to beat Sweden in 120 minutes so – if we avoid defeat – another lottery beckoning.
