Have to say I would drop Sterling in the next game vs Belgium and give Rashford a go. Surprised he didn’t come off yesterday tbh?

25th June 2018 at 9:03 am #23132Moo-Moo… I have to say I reckon you’re about the only person who thinks Trippier shouldn’t be where he is. I think he’s been one of Engerland’s better and more consistent performers over these two games in Russia. As for reading the Express, I saw the game mate, Lofty was nowhere near as effective in that game as he was during the Tunisia game. Reading the red-tops isn’t going to change that.
My team for the Thursday night smack-down…
Pickford,
Walker, Stones, Maguire (no need to change, hardly been busy to be knackered yet…)
Young (RWB, Trippies has a knock apparently), Lingard, Henderson, Ali, Rose (LWB)
Kane, Rashford…_____________________________

25th June 2018 at 9:30 am #23133I thought Trippier’s through balls and crosses were one of our best bits of play.

25th June 2018 at 11:46 am #23139AnonymousAgain you misunderstand I say Tripper had an easy path into the national team and with that kind of support you cannot go wrong. I did not say his playing badly for England at all. I am saying he did nothing of note that got him there in the first place while other players are not so fortunate.

25th June 2018 at 12:07 pm #23140Not sure what your point is about Tripier Moos. Does it matter whether you think he has got into the England team having done very little as long as he performs when he plays for England which you appear to agree that he has? Or would you still play someone ahead of him and if so who?

25th June 2018 at 12:22 pm #23141I really can’t see any agenda against Sterling. In my opinion, all the criticism of his performances for England has been justified. When you pull on the England shirt, you have to be prepared to be pulled apart if you don’t replicate your club form for your country. It’s been the way long before Sterling came on the scene and it will be that way long after he’s retired.
He’s been absolutely brilliant for City but he’s been pretty dreadful at times for England, judged by his own high standards set at club level. The higher standards you set, the more people expect of you, which is why some of the lesser players aren’t criticised as much as Sterling.
I’d persist with him anyway and keep Rashford as an impact sub. I’ve often preferred him coming off the bench for Utd against tired defenders with something to prove rather than starting.

25th June 2018 at 12:26 pm #23142His England stats aren’t great, as Chucky points out above. Whilst Rashford’s aren’t great either, he’s not currently starting games so he’s not there to be shot at. In his last start he was probably the best player on the pitch, though. I’m not sure when the last time was when anyone could say the same about Sterling.
Welbeck probably deserves another look in, having scored 16 goals in the same amount of time Sterling has scored 2. He’s not a world beater but he’s always put chances away for England and has the discipline to track back which could be important against the likes of Belgium.

25th June 2018 at 12:42 pm #23144Anonymousmoos – i would say trippier was the second best english right back last season behind walker. given southgate likes walker in a back 3 that deservedly makes trippier first choice. who do you think deserves it more?
i thought RLC was one of the weaker players yesterday but it was his first ever competitive start so i wont be too critical of him. i think against tunisia, he came on to make an impact when england were drawing and he did brilliantly. he changed the game. in the panama game, england were dominant from early on and it seemed he just didnt that adrenaline rush that maybe saw him stand out against tunisia and take risks. if alli is fit i think he needs to come back in but its good to know RLC can be relied on to make a difference off the bench if needed.

25th June 2018 at 1:02 pm #23147Ed, there is definitely a media agenda against Sterling in his everyday life which is based on everything he does from buying a sandwich at Greggs to his mum a house to his tattoos. Imo no other England player is persecuted like he is. I firmly believe that some of this agenda is then carried over when he plays for England. Sure he has played poorly for England but i just cant accept he was the worst player yesterday, did you think so? but most if not all media pundits gave him the lowest or equal the lowest player performance score. Second point why would you persist with him if he is so bad. Why not start Rashford.

25th June 2018 at 1:12 pm #23148Players are judged on their performances v Tunisia and Panama Sterling imo has been way below his club form hopefully Sterling will start to replicate his club form now as the competition for England starts from here and our next opponents going forwards are going to be much higher level teams than Tunisia and Panama and all the England players will have to up their game for England to progress.

25th June 2018 at 1:16 pm #23150I don’t think he was the worst player at all Jim. Neither did any of these pundits
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/24/england-panama-world-cup-ratings
“spellbinding assist..” bit OTT if anything if you ask me!
https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44595146
“huge endeavour without much luck…”
They’re the first two on Google. Hardly the sign of an agenda.
Why persist with him? Simply because he’s been so good for City and eventually you’d expect him to show it for England. I also said I prefer Rashford from the bench.
As for why he gets so much attention off the pitch, I don’t think he helps himself with things like tattooing a gun on his leg. I’m absolutely certain every one of them would have been slaughtered for that, rightly or wrongly. The other stuff is just part and parcel of being a young English player at a top side. It’s the scrutiny the likes of Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard, Rooney, Beckham faced every single day in their careers. Look at Rooney and how everything he did was front page news. Like Sterling, he often didn’t help himself either.

25th June 2018 at 1:49 pm #23153Ed, there are more reviews that give him equal bottom ratings as those two.
As regards the gun, i think there is more knife crime in the UK than gun crime and jordan Pickford has a knife tattooed on his arm I believe. But not one peep out of the papers for this? Did sterling bring taht on himself? Where else did he not help himself since he has joined City._____________________________

25th June 2018 at 2:00 pm #23154But by ignoring the likes of the above reviews which IMO are extremely kind, means you’ll always see an agenda. If I ignore positive reviews of any player, I could make a case for an agenda. You must admit “spellbinding assist” is a bit OTT! I’m sure I could pick out enough reviews like that one to actually make a case for Sterling being a favourite of the media. We see what we want to see.
Pickford having a knife is a perfect example of my point. The top players are under more scrutiny. Pickford hardly fits into my earlier description of a top player at a top club. He’s hardly got the status of a Rooney, Gerrard, Sterling etc. Do you think it would have been as big a deal if Paul Dickov was spotted coming out of a brothel as it was for Rooney? You get to the top of the game and you’re under the microscope.

25th June 2018 at 2:31 pm #23156AnonymousBig Jim it actually does matter how players break into a higher team. if they then doing well according to some or most people it is a different matter.

25th June 2018 at 4:37 pm #23162Anonymousmoos – second time of asking – so who should be englands starting right back? who has earned it more than trippier? take in to consideration kyle walker is the most deserving but being played as a centre back.
