Moos, not sure you’ve read my posts going by your reply. I’m hardly trying to convince people Ronaldo is better when I admitted Messi is the better player under the right circumstances. My point, much like Messi’s compatriot’a (Simeone) is that Ronaldo is much more capable of excelling in average sides while Messi needs a side building around him of a very high quality to be able to perform. He was awful so far this tournament.

24th June 2018 at 2:59 pm #23109In all fairness Ed Messi and Ronaldo could play upfront in this Argentine side and im convinced neither would get a decent chance.

24th June 2018 at 3:04 pm #2311212 touches, 3 goals, and I would say another pretty quiet game if you ignore the stats… and he’s the tourny’s top scorer… wonder what he could do when he get’s going!!

24th June 2018 at 3:10 pm #23114It’s a fair point Jim but I’m not sure this Portugal side is any better than Argentina if I’m honest.
But yes it’s all about England now. Kane smashing it! Sterling better today. Lingard very good. Loftus-Cheek looked good. Not sure where Alli fits in when all are fit.

24th June 2018 at 3:19 pm #23115Can’t say I was that impressed with Lofty… thought he did more in the cameo in the first game (lovely assist for Harry’s Hattrick! 🙂 )…

24th June 2018 at 3:20 pm #23116Ed, I agree Sterling had a better game. Two assists?? McGuire worries me a little bit and we still look shaky at the back overall. Not so sure on RLC in this game as I think he wasn’t as effective over 90 as he was as a sub. I like Alli, I think his movement combined with Sterling and Lingard behind Kane was more impressive in the first game than this. I think Sterling dropping a little deeper is also more effective. Trippier had a good game today. You have got to be in it to win it and we still are.

24th June 2018 at 5:37 pm #23117AnonymousI actually thought Sterling besides his hand on the goal did the least. If you look at the players ratings provided by the media he has the lowest points. Still a bit loose at the back as well which could be exploited by better teams. Panama cannot really be a yardstick they may very well be the weakest team in the competition or at least one of the weakest.

24th June 2018 at 7:20 pm #23119Better from Sterling but still not great. In his defence, I would say he’s playing out of position in this formation. If you really want to see the best of him, I think you need to play a 4-3-3 formation. My team would be Pickford: Walker, Rose, Stones, Maguire: Henderson, Ali, Lingard: Sterling (right), Rashford (left), Kane. Having said that, GS won’t change a winning formation (and who can blame him?), so, hopefully Raheem will ‘grow’ into the tournament and we’ll see improvement from him game on game.
Must say, great win today and very refreshing to go into the last qualifying game without any real pressure._____________________________

24th June 2018 at 7:38 pm #23120GJ is right Sterling needs to be a bit deeper but I thought he did ok. The media have an agenda against Raheem. He could score a hatrick and still get the lowest marks out of 10. I thought RLC, Young and McGuire were all worse than Sterling today but unfairness no one had a really poor game.

24th June 2018 at 9:23 pm #23121The media have never got over that Sterling left Liverpool for better prospects.
The media darling (currently) Loftus Cheek did nothing but not a word.1_____________________________

24th June 2018 at 10:27 pm #23122RLC was poor imo well short of his cameo v Tunisia and his appearance v Germany. Good win but we’re a long way from perfect especially in midfield and much bigger tests lie ahead but at least we’re in the KO stages after two games.

25th June 2018 at 5:46 am #23123AnonymousDon’t criticize RLC as he had very few opportunities while a guy like Tripper gets an easy green card into the national side, maybe his doing well but once you in its not that difficult.

25th June 2018 at 6:16 am #23124Reflecting on the two games. Best world cup start I can remember. Not just the results but the performance. Yes against mediocre teams. Many positives. My only reservation is whether we have the midfield creativity to play against better teams.

25th June 2018 at 6:44 am #23125Moos how come it is not acceptable to criticise RLC when he has a poor game but it it is fine to criticise Sterling when he has a poor game? Just interested.

25th June 2018 at 6:51 am #23127While you’re at it Moo-Moo, care to explain how Trippier has had it easy? Didn’t I read somewhere he’s created more chances than any other player this World Cup (so far)? Not too shabby for an overrated wingback…
Big J… the difference between Lofty and Duckman (new superhero duo??) is Lofty has had A poor game in an England shirt, whereas Duckman has had… how many now? I love you Big J, and we’ve had this dance before, but Duckman just misses too many chances for my liking… missed another sitter against Panannananananananma, get Rashford in now so he can get comfy!

25th June 2018 at 7:16 am #23128Just looked it up, according to the interweb sterling has made 40 appearances in an England shirt (32 as starter and 8 as sub), totaling 2608 minutes and, wait for it, 2 goals…. or one goal every 1304 minutes (he has more yellow cards (5) than goals!)…
On the other hand Rashford… isn’t that much better… 20 apperances (8 start and 12 sub), totalling 863 minutes and a whopping 3 goals… or one goal every 290 minutes…
Of course, more to football than just goals, we all know that…

25th June 2018 at 7:34 am #23129AnonymousPlease read the daily express that describes Loftus Cheek as having a star quality game whether that is true or not the real truth is all of us tend to favourably support the players linked to our clubs including me but I admit it unlike some of you. I watch Spurs games regularly and Tripper has never stood out so I believe he had an easy path to the national team and with that kind of support you can hardly go wrong. You are of course free to have your own opinions but mine are there to stay unless a player does something extraordinary and many neutral fans have also brought that issue up its not only me.

25th June 2018 at 8:23 am #23130Moos, you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and I am genuinely interested. But my response was to your post before mine where you appeared to tell everyone else ‘don’t criticise Loftus Cheek’ Which tbh i thought was a bit odd?? FWIW I can and will repeat I think Sterling has been poor for England. He didn’t have a great game on Sunday but it was a bit better than the Tunisia game. I do take all media reports of Sterling’s performances with a pinch of salt as there is a definite agenda against him. He’s had a great season at City but he could score 40 goals and there would still be those that would look to bring him down. His best position is a bit deeper and out wide, he isn’t a striker like Kane. Jim
