One thing one can concede from yesterday is clearly how dependent Klopp is, on his front 3. It is worrying that, because there is a big drop in quality after that. And whilst as Iβve said City obviously have had more resources to get better strength in depth, particularly up top, I do think Klopp has had resources to strengthen this area more, or he could have developed some more of the squad into the first team. Our front 3 never generally changes apart from in domestic cup games like yesterday. That is not healthy. And going forward, itβs hard not to look at what happened with the burnout at Dortmund, and not be concerned in the longer term. In some ways to Klopp, less is more, which has obviously worked out well for the moment and developed a strong mentality. But could we potentially pay a similar price as Dortmund did, in the longer term?

27th January 2020 at 12:08 pm #62150AnonymousI would like to have seen us make an effort in the replay but I don’t agree that Klopp’s refusal reflects poorly on him. He is very much in favour of the break. It’s not just to rest muscles but also minds, including his own.
This is a time for the players to fly off with their families and have a few days in the sun and after many of them didn’t get enough time off in the summer, it could be important, especially since the other teams will get this time to relax and reset.
I know Klopp doesn’t give a damn what people think about him,. he’s only thinking about what’s best for this side and I stand with him there. He’s not often wrong when it comes to what is best for this team. People are welcome to their opinions though of course.

Absolutely Mak. As Iβve alluded to above, this is why the winter break is sacrosanct to Klopp because of his smaller playing group vulnerabilities.

27th January 2020 at 12:31 pm #62155Last word from me on this.
We’re talking about Liverpool only losing 3 days of their PL break they would still have an 11 day winter break and the vast majority of the squad would get the full 14 days just a few of the squad players would get 11 days but they’ve not been over played.
There was nothing wrong with the team that Liverpool started v Shrewsbury those players aren’t tired in mind and body and some are in need of game time anyway.
Let’s see what happens and whether what Klopp said after the game actually happens.
I think it’s all down to Klopp booking two weeks in the Caribbean for him and his Missus and being more scared of his Missus than any negative reactions.?

27th January 2020 at 12:31 pm #62156AnonymousIt’s worth noting that I said the above, as a person who was livid at the introduction of a winter break. It’s selfishness though on my part and also, I thought it would be during the Xmas period, which is very important to me as a fan. 442, I love the games coming thick and fast but that’s not the same thing as me saying that it’s what’s best for our chances in the major tournaments.
Mikus, that front 3 does need a bit of backing up alright. Shaqiri is good enough to back up Salah’s position, it worked against Barca but if we could sign a better player who could cover all 3 positions then I think we could rotate enough there that 4 top players could get enough games to be happy with.
Nine, I do understand your position on this, mostly. The FA Cup was special to me a decade or 2 ago. I think my first ever time watching Liverpool was 84/85 against Everton in the FA Cup final. I told you lads about my Granddad introducing me to the team etc. I remember Cantona scoring with about 5 minutes left in 95-ish, to beat us. I was devastated. I watched us win it multiple times and that was fantastic but over recent years, it’s just no longer as important to me. it’s no longer important to managers, or clubs on the whole. Managers have won it and lost their jobs right afterwards.
The reality of the situation is that Klopp has both eyes on the prize and isn’t going to be derailed and that is that. He’s taking a firm stance which maybe doesn’t come across well but it’s in OUR best interests. He’s got to be selfish here because nobody else has Liverpool’s interests at heart.

27th January 2020 at 12:34 pm #62157AnonymousWhat of it though Nine? Also it’s not cutting back on 14 days holiday. That’s the time until the next match, there will have to be a number of days of preparation before it. They might be back an entire week beforehand. If that’s the case then it cuts his time off in half.

27th January 2020 at 12:47 pm #62159im sorry but they sound like a bunch of pansies and Klopp has for the first time made himself look daft IMHO
wait for it, wait for it!!!
so we have a winter break for the first time in ….ever, the lose what 4 days of it?
no other team in previous seasons had that luxury and not while already having won the PL with soooo many points clear
if pool arent interested in the domestic comps wanting to focus on CL and WCC then thats fine, no issues, play the kids and take your shot but you cant complain when you draw and this happens
the way some of you talk about footballers makes you almost believe they are worth the thousands of punds per second they get paid…..
i didnt like when united dropped out of a comp when in the WCC but they did because then they had less games to worry about, either you play in these comps or dont bother and why try to be this mega succesful team but only bother with half the comps and then complain because yoru doing well but just not well enough to avoid a replay?
mental, you should be going to win it all ang the historic quintuple! not maon becasue you are succesfgul therefore the poor babies are tired and need more time on the beach….thats what summers for

27th January 2020 at 12:48 pm #62160Mak, the 3 days lost wouldn’t touch the first team and barely touch the first team squad either there’s an easy solution there if there’s the will but if there’s not so be it.
Be ironic and unfitting imo if there’s no movement on this if Liverpool were to go on and win the FA Cup from here and complete the Double. I wouldn’t put it past them.

27th January 2020 at 12:54 pm #62162Stevo, to be fair to United weren’t they put in an impossible situation by the FA who wanted them to compete in the WCC which impinged on the FA Cup in order to give England a better chance of winning the FA”s World Cup bid? I agree with you though it shouldn’t have happened.

27th January 2020 at 1:51 pm #62169So they will park the Ferraris in the garage for a few weeks with a nice 19 point buffer and recharge for the undefeated run home. Whats a day here or a day there. No tears to be shed here. I might learn to play the violin instead.

27th January 2020 at 2:53 pm #621779s-Klopp is not really obliged to play any 1st team players, now is he? The PL title is his 1st priority, with the CL in close 2nd.Add to that the fact that Klopp is German, and therefore the magic of the FA Cup doesnt mean anything to him.Why would/should he risk injuries to key players, when chasing that elusive title that they havent won it for nearly 30 years? If I was him I wouldnt even have taken my 1st team to the game at all, would have given them a day off completely. With Mane already injured, what happens if you lost Salah,Firminho,VVD?

27th January 2020 at 3:22 pm #62180Mav, that’s not the issue though mate this is not a debate about playing an under strength team that’s totally acceptable it’s about selecting a complete Under 23 team and Klopp not even being in the dug out.

27th January 2020 at 4:31 pm #62186Irrespective of who plays what it will be a sad day if the FA Cup loses any ground on this. This has been OUR tradition for years, it has a legacy of Shrewsburys, Yeovil and others that breathe life into the English game. Is it being taken over by greed for “the bigger picture” I sincerely hope not. I have no problem with Liverpool or any team fielding reserve teams, if that is there expectancy, so be it. As to rest, well I could name more than a few jobs that is more stressful and they do not get winter breaks or summer breaks for some. In one sense, I am all for a complete shut down, in say January or February for a month, of course they will not do that but if that is what is required then it should be done. We are in danger of making things worse not better

27th January 2020 at 5:10 pm #62189Its up to each club to respect a competition or not. Having top players on the bench is one thing. Just in case. But playing your EDS is something different. But its about respecting the competition!
