I thought Derby played really well last night these things happen in the League Cup United fielded a scratch team and Derby were highly motivated playing United at OT. Anything can happen in games like that.
Pleased for Frank and the Derby players because I thought they deserved it but it could just as easily have been United in the hat for the next round.
Derby will give anyone a game their drawn against in the next round.

26th September 2018 at 2:40 pm #26677That was a strong utd team nine
That right full looks very good.
Grant did very well aswell. The top teams have huge squads now and I think tonight you will see two string Liverpool and Chelsea teams even with a lot of players of both teams rested

26th September 2018 at 2:59 pm #26680AnonymousCheers Sean and Jim. though I’m only passing by, won’t hang around long.
Sean – you are right regarding lack of effort. Jose just can’t get them fired up for some reason. He knows that most teams play a ‘cup final’ against Utd, and his programmes notes from last night said as much – so he knows the issue, and he says he tells the players that they have to match the oppositions effort – he just can’t get them to do that for whatever reason. Unforgivable by the players imo, but if he can’t get the players to at least give 100% then we are in a right muddle.

26th September 2018 at 3:13 pm #26681AnonymousMick – I’ll try and respond to your various points.
Yes, I think we all knew that your opening post was trolling. It was the further post suggesting that you were correct that I was responding too, I had to use something to debate with so thought the OP was a good place to start.
So his narcissism didn’t boil over a couple of weeks ago in his “respect” rant about his personal history?! So Martial and Rashford are both motivated first 11 players rather than Martial feeling slighted by the Sanchez deal and wanting out..Rashford’s development under Mourinho? This is obviously moving the goal posts from the OP – which I think we both now accept was just your attempt at trolling to get a reaction, however after moving the goalposts to suit your agenda after the facts have become known it’s difficult to argue against the paragraph, however if you can name me a young forward who has played more minutes than Rashford in the past two seasons, for a top PL club then I’m all ears.
So you don’t think he tried or would have bought the likes of Ronaldo, Neymar, Bale as an immediate fix if the club trusted his judgement and could see the marketing benefits? I would say highly unlikely with Utd specs on. Again, somewhat moving the goalposts to suit your agenda, but this is easier to argue against – no I don’t believe he would have. If we believe all what we hear in the press – which you seem happy to do so if the story is negative in it’s narrative – didn’t the same press say that it was Woodward who wanted those players and Jose was against signing them?
Your expansive list of players Mourinho has improved: Young, Lingard and McTominay. Matic, Fred, Lukaku, Bailly all play just as well as when he brought them. Would you agree?
Hahahaha Fred’s been there 10 seconds and has scored 1 goal. How you see Bailly as a better player than he was at Villarreal would require 2 pairs of Man U specs?? Really! Matic better than he was at Chelsea, Young better than he’s been over the previous 15 years??! I didn’t say Bailly and Matic had improved. Is this another attempt at trolling? Young was first choice for England at the WC. He wasn’t first choice for England – or even in the squad – before Jose took over. I’d say that was an improvement. Even with my Utd specs on. I could respond in kind, but won’t lower myself to your level. As for the other stuff – didn’t Pochettino go on about respect, or disrespect recently? I’m sure he did, perhaps you could link the threads you created about that one? That should clear up if you are balanced, or whether or not you treat Jose and Utd differently. But my comment was a wider one, not limited to this thread.

26th September 2018 at 3:27 pm #26682Mick, I find it hard to remember last week let alone April. Was it something I said?

26th September 2018 at 3:34 pm #26684Spot on about Rashford, in particular, Alfie. I remember having a bet with a Liverpool fan on TT when Mourinho and Pep first came in. The Liverpool fan insisted Iheanacho was in better hands under Pep than Rashford was under Mourinho and that Iheanacho would therefore get more minutes that season. You look at them both now and the only one being criticised is Mourinho, despite him still having Rashford and giving him a lot of minutes. Pep literally preferred an empty seat(!) than give a young player a place on the bench last season and very little was said about it.

26th September 2018 at 3:39 pm #26686Ed, just once Pep chose to not fill the subs bench. He also got widely criticised for it also if i remember correctly. You could also argue that Iheanacho didn’t fit the style of play Pep prefers. Ie not traditional target men and it was a dam sight harder to get into the City team for a youth player than the United side?

26th September 2018 at 3:43 pm #26687I know it’s an obvious comment but had Mourinho won the PL instead of Guardiola the pressure and problems would probably be the other way around.

26th September 2018 at 3:46 pm #26688You could indeed argue all that Jim. I agree. But nobody ever says “Jose doesn’t play Rashford. But maybe it’s because of this reason or that reason”. People just criticise Jose for not playing Rashford regardless. I agree though, there are often reasons behind these things that fans don’t think about.
It certainly wasn’t ignored at the time, what Pep did with his bench, but I think he got off pretty lightly compared to how Jose is treated in the media for his handling of Rashford.
Just for the record Jim, none of the above is criticism of Pep. I’m just trying to highlight things another top manager has done without getting the fuss Jose gets re his supposed poor handling of young players. Pep is clearly an excellent coach and manager.

26th September 2018 at 4:10 pm #26689It’s a good point in Rashford. He’s git plenty of minutes. His stats are poor
Jose also brought mctownwy through
If there is a serious rift between pogba and Jose then the club have to bsck Jose
No player is bigger then the club and keys be honest, pogba has been very average for utd and is far to inconsistent. There’s a great player in there but he’s been poor
Jose really doesn’t help himself with his comments. I don’t think he will be sacked. I don’t think he’s even near it as the season is only 6 games old
Few of my mates want him sacked as utd are just poor to watch most of the times. A player had one or two bad games and he’s dropped. There is no style to their play like other clubs have. The football is slow and ponderous at times

26th September 2018 at 5:32 pm #26690AnonymousHa! I remember that bet Ed!
Jim – what do you mean it’s harder to get a youth player into the City team? Is that due to Pep not wanting to play them, or are you saying it’s due to being a better side? As Utd gave more minutes to academy trained players than another other PL team last season, so Jose is proving those that say he doesn’t give youth a chance wrong.
Also, if it is due to quality of the team – we finished 2nd last season with 3 more points than City finished the season coming 3rd the season before. Surely Pep would have no excuse for not picking youth in that season?
Finally, I read a stat some time ago that City were the only major European league Champions not to manage to play youth players for 90 mins over the course of a season. So that is comparing Pep to other managers who also came first last year.

26th September 2018 at 6:41 pm #26692Alfie, you are probably right to a degree about Pep being a bit reluctant to play youth players. I thought there were times last season when we could have played our young players a bit more. But also I think last season it was harder to get into the City’s side than United’s. Partly possibly because Mouriniho didn’t seem sure what his best side was and tinkered arround a lot more? Just my opinion. Chuffed to bits Foden got a start and played well last night. I can only hope he gets lots more opportunities.

26th September 2018 at 7:15 pm #26693Foden looks very good Jim. I just hope all these nonsense comparisons in the media stop. Comparing him to Iniesta at this stage of his career is stupid and Pep, rightly, played down the comparisons. If we’ve learned anything from that Wilshere performance against Barca or when Reece Oxford bossed Arsenal as a 16 Yr old, it’s that we need to let these young players actually achieve something in the game before hyping them up too much

26th September 2018 at 7:22 pm #26694Fair points Alfie…respect
Just wanted to raise the subjects of Mourinhos modus operandi, Utds positioning of a club with a rapidly escalating wage bill based on short term fixes and the smoke of the two trophies won and 18 points off the leaders meaning all was heading in the right direction.
I still feel vindicated of the view in April that all was not well at Man Utd or Mourinho.
Here in September I think things will get worse before they get better.
The dilemma of possible future talent wanting to leave or not play to there best and no visible sign of the spine of 6 players who will stay that they build around to compete with the best in Manchester/North West never mind Europe. That’s before a new manager comes in an starts the process again. Whilst other teams are solidifying with 1 or 2 additions each season.
It’s going to be a long EXPENSIVE climb back to the top of seriously competing for PL or CL.
Considering the debt leveraged against Man Utd. This isn’t necessarily going to happen quickly!
I’m sorry if this ruffles Pro Mourinho or Pro Man U feathers, but the evidence of the route they have taken over the last 3+ years is there to see, for anyone who chooses to see it..
Peace “respect!”_____________________________

26th September 2018 at 7:40 pm #26695In fairness Mick, I for one have been a tad surprised by the backing that the United board have given Mouriniho. They haven’t exactly done a levy have they. Is there a reason why that wouldn’t continue.

26th September 2018 at 10:51 pm #26715Jim..Opinion…
Mourinho is in his calculated “distuctive” period. Often 3 years… He’s bright enough like a serial devorcise to play off his best assets= big tits and blonde hair or apparently unique achievements at Porto and Milan.
On a similar vein he works out the cash flow of his “sugar daddy.”
If he foresees anything but a clear run at the top 2 squads, he creates an intolerable situation that necessitates his future wage/divorce + half house and pension immediately, which apparently was Chelsea twice, Madrid and now !an Utds fault….”Next!” Lucrative business playing this game for an elite few! For a while…
Of course Man U board will find £300mill for the next Man U manager…If in doubt keep digging or else your share price, bubbble bursts…Like me owning a £60k car on PCP or buying a 3 year old car outright…
Your all bright boys..you can see what’s really going on here…Clearly Pogba wants out too..

27th September 2018 at 10:45 am #26727Ed…reading Foden’s interview he states he knows Pep will introduce him at the right time for his development. He obviously puts his trust in him and eventually he will become a very good player for club and country in the future. He is still on a learning curve

2nd December 2018 at 9:42 pm #28798Not gloating, just asking. The chaps who staunchly rebuffed my reality check of Utds direction back in the “heady days” of April….
Thoughts now?For me, it’s irratreviable with Mourinho. It’s probably passed the point of retaining or encouraging (even with massive wages) the right calibre for an immediate, sustained recovery.
