Sean, think you’re right mate a trophy is more important than the top 4 and there’s more glamour and a bit more qudos in winning the EL and qualifying for the CL that way than by achieving it via the top 4.
Having said that I think it’s tougher to finish in the top 4 than it is to win the EL and finishing in the top 4 is a better measurement of a team over 38 games.
Currently Chelsea are still a way away from both though.
I thought Nil made a good point about switching EL games to Tuesday and Wednesday nights which could be achieved by playing on alternate weeks to the CL and I think UEFA need to get rid of the early kick off times too many people are travelling back from work at 17:55.

21st March 2019 at 3:14 pm #36207Nine, EL is still a prestigious honour mate. I don’t think you guys should be too hard on yourselves as you’re still in with a chance as with top 4.
Spurs and Man City broke the cycle of a default top 4 for quite some seasons now and this Wenger found more of a challenge.
Out of this cluster of teams, there’s likely to be one team weaker than other whether it’s down to transition or an ageing squad. United e.g. experienced the latter and one of the reasons why the League and CL places has been a lot more wide open.
Not making it in the top 4 isn’t the end of the world though naturally I understand why qualifying for the CL is an aspiration for many clubs.
Cheers β½οΈ?

21st March 2019 at 3:59 pm #362081) That Goonie is a right funny bugger, ain’t he? Fun Run indeed…
2) Don’t see for one second how playing little ears on Tuesdays/Wednesdays would improve it one little bit. However, increasing the big ears spots from 1 to 3 would, the two finalists, who can then play the game for pure glory, and a 3rd vs 4th play-off for the losing semi-finalists would!
3) Silly-Willy-Nilly, for the love of all that is holy and hot-pockets, stop banging that sense of entitlement drum, Salahpool haven’t been good enough to win a pot, just as everybody else who also hasn’t won a pot lately hasn’t been good enough…
4) Anybody know any good jokes?? Very frustrating day in the office… I need a laugh!!

21st March 2019 at 4:40 pm #36209I was thinking similar Chucky re CL places for a EL Finalist.
Tuesday nights and Wednesday nights would be much better nights to play than Thursdays imo and they need to get rid of the early 17.55 am kick off.

21st March 2019 at 7:02 pm #36213You canβt hugely change the European Cup to the CL with more teams, much more money and greater prestige and not expect it to diminish the UEFA Cup/EL. Giving the finalists of the EL a CL place may help a bit, but itβs ultimately just a cosmetic change that canβt solve the root of the problem, ie making the EL a prestigious trophy again. It used to be a very respectable trophy – the best of the rest if you like. Now itβs basically used by big teams like Chelsea who are struggling domestically to make top 4 and so go for it, effectively making it a play off trophy, and nothing much more than that. Indeed dropping the CL teams into the EL competition further highlights it being a βlosersβ trophy and indeed many want to avoid it anyway with the congestion of Thursday night football.
Iβd consider scrapping it and instead, all the teams finishing 5th in their domestic leagues then play a short knockout competition to decide the final CL place at the end of the season.

21st March 2019 at 9:25 pm #362142 issues I take with Europa:
1) Far too many fixtures
2) The ‘Thursday’ scheduling and certain kick off times. Deemed to me as a lame duck.
I wouldn’t want it to mesh at all with the CL as that in itself starting off as a competition with just the Elite and the Top 2 from each league being able to partake. I think it would devalue it.
One thing they could do is alternate the itinerary so both sets of competitions CAN be played on a Tuesday and Wednesday, but not all together; One week Europa, the next week, Champions League.
Shorten the games and maybe consider a straight knockout comp. No 2 legs until the Semi Final (like the format of the EFL Cup). Just make the comp more fun, less of a drag and pump more Prize money.
Sorted me thinks.

21st March 2019 at 9:54 pm #36215Agree with you on all points Nil re the EL.
Perhaps there should be seedings based on co efficients where the top seeds don’t join the EL until the same time as the CL teams drop into the competition which is the ko round of 32.

21st March 2019 at 10:05 pm #36217Nine, absolutely with you mate on that.
The shortening of the format would really help teams trying to juggle more than one comp and not having those bigger squads with an abundance of quality.
It could potentially stop teams having to compromise fielding ‘weakened’ teams and just be ambitious. Good morale for fans too knowing teams are wholeheartedly striving to win.
