18th March 2019 at 2:33 pm #36125Despite all the problems Chelsea are only 1 point behind United, 3 points behind Arsenal and 4 points behind Spurs so qualifying through the top 4 via the PL is still not completely out of the question if we sort ourselves out a bit and get Higuain match fit during the international break.
The EL draw has been quite kind to us and if we play to our abilities there’s every chance of making the Final but nothing is certain in football but if that were to happen then we would likely face the winners if the Napoli v Arsenal tie in the Final which would be no easy task.
Obviously I would prefer Chelsea to made the CL but currently we’re not good enough to make any significant impact on the CL and other than City and Liverpool I’m not sure anyone else is either and given that I wouldn’t be that disappointed if Chelsea were to miss out on the CL next season especially if the transfer ban sticks but that’s still open to conjecture.
As is almost everything Chelsea currently.?

18th March 2019 at 6:42 pm #36144Generally, all 4 teams are in the running to claim 3rd and 4th places.
There is hope. Moving on from that however you have to take on board current form and results over the course of the season and other factors.
For example; away from home, the only side Tottenham have beaten away from home is Manchester United. United have shown they are capable of putting on an unbeaten run.
Arsenal can put together a string of results, but I have a slight doubt as with Chelsea.
A hard one to call even though there’s not that many games now left to play.

19th March 2019 at 2:12 am #36150AnonymousThey are gonna have to do something about the European competitions, in order to properly reward the top teams. The big 6 in the PL are consistently in the top 20 teams in Europe. It feels kinda wrong that we have not only 1 but 2 TOP sides who won’t make the CL next season, when they’d beat the pants off the smaller EU teams who are honestly just being shoehorned in.
Now, is the answer to allow the top 6 into the CL? No, it isn’t. The answer is to make the Europa league worthwhile. I think they did well when they added Cl qualification for the winner of the Europa league. That is what I’m talking about but it also has to be able to stand on it’s own 2 feet and I’m not sure it does that. What could be done? I don’t know but they need to work harder at this competition and give it some structure that has it with it’s own identity as a competition.
As things stand it’s 4th or bust and that’s a damn shame.

19th March 2019 at 9:18 pm #36151Mr Mak, yeah I agree. Expand the competition even more to allow a maximum of six countries. Then we all get closer to a massive pseudo-European league competition.
The obstacle though is prize money. They (Ufea) have already received an increase in TV money form the big TV companies for the current system. If there were more teams allowed at the very least the current structure would have to remain the same so that nobody loses money from the current setup. If Uefa is able to get TV companies to pay more money for the extra teams then it could work, I think that is always the tricky issue for Ufea.

20th March 2019 at 2:32 pm #36175Chelsea aren’t out of it but may fall short of the top 4 without there is an unexpected change of Manager in the international break with an Interim Manager introducing a bit of new Manager bounce into the equation.
Failing that Chelsea will have to rely on winning the EL not impossible but not easy either otherwise it’s another season in the EL which whilst not ideal is not a total disaster.
Other than a bit of added revenue there’s no real point in being in the CL imo if you can’t have a meaningful impact on it and make the Semi Finals or Final and currently only City and Liverpool look capable of doing that consistently.

21st March 2019 at 8:10 am #36193Ah come on nine are you serious? It’s all about being in the cl. Playing massive teams. At massive stadiums, with massive crowds and the best players in the world. The cl is everything even you don’t stand a chance of winning. Every player wants to be in the cl.
I think you are just trying to butter uo Chelsea’s situation. The el is a horrible few months. Far to many games but well worth it you can win and I actually fancy Chelsea to win it.
On their day they are an excellent side as shown many times this season
Missing cl running for two years in a row is a problem for a team like Chelsea. The majority of fans want those big nights back and will hazard stay without another yr of cl football?
He may stay but all the players want cl football. It’s so so big these days.
It will also mean most likely that sari will get sacked and Chelsea have to build again. If the transfer ban stays in place it will cause Chelsea problems but I can. See them winning that on appeal

21st March 2019 at 8:21 am #36194Kinda with Waspsucker on this one… (and not because it’s Chelsea!).
If it’s not worth competing then everybody bar Barca, Pool, City and Juve might as well cancel their plans for the CL next year, and everybody bar City might as well withdraw from the Prem for a couple of years!!
You got to be in it to win it, and if every club isn’t aiming for the stars (despite laying in the gutter, even if Chelsea’s gutter is lined with Gucci Bath robs!), then what’s the bloody point?

21st March 2019 at 9:15 am #36195Look fellas as I’ve often stated I’m a massive fan of the CL but it really doesn’t get going until the round of 16.
My point really was that currently even if Chelsea qualify through the PL or the EL they are currently unlikely to go much further than the Group stages or the round of 16 at best and you are only likely to face one of the glamour Club’s in the competition once or maybe twice up until then.
Realistically currently of the PL teams only City or Liverpool have a chance of winning the CL and no PL team has won it since Chelsea won it since 2012 and only two PL teams have won it in the last 10 years.
Of course I would rather Chelsea were in the CL and you can’t dismiss the revenues it creates and the fact that players want to play in the CL and that it attracts players to the Club if you’re a regular CL Club.
And you’re right Sean being out of the CL for two years running if that is what happens particularly as Chelsea are a Club who have consistently competed in the CL over the last 15 years often to the Semi Final stages and to two Finals as well as winning it is not where you would choose to be but sometimes you have to accept you are where you are and currently Chelsea for all sorts of reasons don’t look like a Club capable of competing in the CL to me and it might be better to try and sort ourselves out a bit before returning to the CL rather than being in the CL just to make up the numbers in the Group stages.
But I’m looking forward to all the CL Qtr Finals with great anticipation and will watch as much of the CL as possible up to and including the Final because it’s the best Club competition in the world imo and I wish all of the PL Club’s the very best of luck although hand on heart because of my Catalan connections I’m rooting for Barca as I always do when Chelsea aren’t involved. Cheers All 999

21st March 2019 at 10:22 am #36200Haha true Steveo. The problem from a trophy cabinet point of view is that it doesn’t show for much. From a business point of view more than ever these days, it’s needed. The criticism often given to Arsenal was the fact the Wenger just show ambition to try and succeed as far as possible beyond the group stages.

21st March 2019 at 10:24 am #36201Regarding the Europa, first thing’s first: get those games back to Tuesdays and Wednesdays and try and make it more appealing to the audience.

21st March 2019 at 1:12 pm #36204I honestly loved our journey last season in the CL. All those top teams we beat.
I want us to be challenging like that every season with a minimum ‘default’ of the League Cup. It’s about continuity.
I’m not greedy in wanting every year but in the same breath, going 7 years without a trophy is unacceptable, though under Klopp and FSG, we have seen to be making genuine progress and Klopp’s signings virtually all of them for me have been quality. Mane for example could be deemed quite easily as a £150 million pound player.
