Lol, Chucks, why do you think I’m joining forces with you 😀 There’s always a hidden motive where I’m concerned 🙂 😉 I need Conte’s help 😀

7th August 2022 at 8:05 pm #197419Brian, Adlab’s explanation was spot-on re the Man United league.
I think I’m easily led by the first game/first impressions, but what I see is a Blue domination and these 4/5 league titles in a space of a few years proves my point.

7th August 2022 at 8:41 pm #197420Nil, I think you’re over reacting to the first weekends results and performances.
Rarely do two such very high quality sides as City and Liverpool come along at the same time one or other will almost certainly win the title and it’s very difficult to predict which one.

7th August 2022 at 10:01 pm #197422Nine, absolutely agree mate. All within reason. I listen to the Radio, and it’s just all Manchester City. There are 19 other Teams, yet Everyone just drools on Haaland and the Blue of Manchester which is now starting to remind me of a Red in Manchester.
Feels a just a tad bit grim when Liverpool work so hard so claw back something like a 14 point lead and miss out on a League Title as with 2019, and really receive zero recognition. I wonder whether Man United were winning League Titles on a 90 point mark.
Just gets a bit same, but all good. As they say mate, One Swallow Never Makes A Summer.
Cheers

7th August 2022 at 10:22 pm #197423Good 3 points for us today, against, what could have been, very trick opponents, especially as we looked decidedly ‘undercooked’ in the CS last weekend. We controlled the game, pretty much, from start to finish and great to see Haaland off to a flyer.
On a side note, SSN are reporting United have had a £7.6m bid turned down from Bologna for 33yo Marco Arnautovic. If true, that’s very embarrassing – oh how the mighty have fallen._____________________________

7th August 2022 at 10:58 pm #197424Gj,
all I hear mate is cliches` used; the word Recruitment. Something that Gary Neville spouted, and oh yeah, he’s still the best pundit on this planet. They are worlds apart from 2013 and the Identity that dominated 20 Years. It’s a sorry state of affairs.
They have gone so far down the line with spending, they’ve realized they can no longer go further. Unfortunately for them, they can’t attract the players they want, because those players will naturally choose Man City, Chelsea, and Liverpool (likelihood).
The New Manager is carrying the current burden on his shoulders. Fair Play to him taking this on. If he is dismissed come October, than that’s the last straw. He needs to be afforded time. I never thought about all this though and who would have to be fair 10 years ago.

7th August 2022 at 11:14 pm #197425So my take having watched nearly all games this weekend:
Arsenal: Well, they definitely have a starting XI now that could make some serious impact. Problem still is the weakest link for me, Arteta. Same tactics as last season, go a goal up then try and defend it for the rest of the game. Really don’t see that getting them in the top four, they will finish 6th again. Chelsea, City, Liverpool, Spurs and a bolter will be above them (possibly ManU if they can sort their shit out)
Liverpool: I thought they needed a new dynamo in the midfield. They have their defence and attack set very well for the season ahead, but the graft Klopp requires from his midfield is going to take its toll over the course of the season. Still can’t see them winning it, nor finishing anything lower than 2nd
Chelsea: I know there were players missing, but boy were they flat against a very averrage Everton. Last season I was convinced they had the squad to push City all the way. This could be a make or break season here. I fear they may finish out of the top 4 but really shouldn’t.
City: When I saw the squad for the game I was surprised at how thin on it was for the start of the season (well, in City terms anyway). Could this smaller squad depth cost them at the pointy end of the season?
As for Haaland, well City now have a threat they’ve never really had before. Even with Sergio they never had that marauding runner outpacing defenders from the half way line. Now City have a completely new attacking strategy in their arsenal should they choose to deploy it. Will be very interesting to see. If injuries stay away, I can see them absolutely blitzing this comp.Spurs: Hard to tell from what I saw. I thought Saints were poor but did Spurs make them look poor. Not enough of a test for me but the squad they now have is impressive. Tipping them to take 3rd
Man U: Has anything changed? Doesn’t look like it. I personally can’t see them breaking the top 4 but who knows, TH could turn things around. Supposedly the viruses have been eradicated from that squad, let’s see if the recovery goes well.
Others: Wolves off to their ususal poor start but when they get on a run are very dangerous, possible bolter there. Leicester, despite the draw I thought we looked really good. Much like the last two seasons, a lot will depend on if we can keep the majority of our squad fit. Ricardo already likely gone for the season. We actually scored from a set piece rather than conceded!!!! West Ham, will always be dangerous but I don’t think they will get top 6, I think they missed their chance there, much like we did two seasons ago.

8th August 2022 at 8:19 am #197429True enough Nil the points totals Liverpool earned in the last few seasons would have been enough to have claimed multiple PL titles in previous seasons and it’s unfortunate at the height of Liverpool’s powers they are having to compete for the title with a team as good as City’s.
I don’t think it’s true that Liverpool didn’t get recognition for what was a very good season by them, I think they did get recognition from both the media and opposition fans alike.
The media will always react to the the latest performance’s of both teams and players last week the positivity was all about Liverpool and Nunez this week it’s all about City and Haaland. That’s the way it goes buddie.

8th August 2022 at 9:18 am #197431Gj, yeah I commented on here yesterday about the Arnautovic rumours. Absolutely ridiculous. As are the Rabiot reports from David Ornstein this morning. Just bizarre that we’ve known about Ten Hag coming in since about May yet here we are making panic buys. When (not if) we inevitably end up without De Jong, we’re going to become an even bigger laughing stock than we were under Ole. I thought the Fabregas and Sancho sagas were bad but this De Jong business is something g else 😂.
I don’t even know what to say any more. The club is finished at the highest level until it’s sold. I’ve been a big advocate of Ten Hag and, whilst I think the reaction from the media is way overboard and a tad premature, I always maintained that I only wanted Ten Hag if the structure above him was good enough. Ideally Van der Sar and Ten Hag coming in together. What we’re seeing now is that we’ve learnt nothing from the Woodward era and continue to employ suits to lead the footballing side of the business with little or no football knowledge or experience. It’s a sad state of affairs and I genuinely think things are going to get much worse before they get better.

8th August 2022 at 9:48 am #197432I would be slightly concerned if I was a United fan that the majority of ten Hag’s focus in the transfer market seems to be centred around Ajax/ex Ajax/Dutch players.

8th August 2022 at 10:01 am #197433I’m torn on that particular point Nine. On the surface, I agree that it’s a very risky strategy. On the other hand, I have zero faith in Utd’s scouting and transfer setup to find better targets than the ones ETH is coming up with.
In theory, I think there’s a lot of logic in bringing in players familiar with his (the Ajax) system. It’s a massive transition for Utd to start playing that way and that transition will be smoother the more familiarity there is in the side who understand his instructions. With that said, there is an enormous gulf in quality between the leagues which we’ve seen with many players coming in from that league. Even at Ajax, though, he took a good while to start to get them playing how he wanted so it will take a while at Utd too.
Given the right players, I don’t doubt his ability to eventually turn around the club’s fortunes and getting them playing good, entertaining football. What I doubt is Utd’s ability to provide the funds needed to give him the players to do that as well as the appetite and patience within the club to ride the inevitable stormy period during the transition. As soon as CL looks difficult to achieve and the likes of Poch are still on the market, their commitment to ETH and his long term plan are going to be put to the test big time. I’m sure they’re already ruing not bringing in Conte who, for all his faults, is a quick fix manager.

8th August 2022 at 10:06 am #197434Foxy, I have a feeling Leicester will struggle this season and may even get dragged into a relegation scrap. Rodgers’ stock has fallen massively over the last year or so. The amount of time Leicester spent in the top 4 for 2 straight seasons only to collapse at the final hurdle was very worrying.

8th August 2022 at 11:07 am #197435ED…I think Utd will stay with ETH, let him try and build his team, and back him\.Poch…everyone says he will be next at Utd but I think he will view City has his next step if Pep goes, which I hope he does not…I want 10 years from Pep!!!

8th August 2022 at 11:39 am #197436Just watched the Utd game highlights. How was the foul on Welbeck not a penalty?
The ref could miss it because of a bad position but how on earth did VAR not ask the referee to look at it._____________________________

8th August 2022 at 11:50 am #197437Var did look at it I believe Adlab but it was not deemed a clear and obvious error. That rule needs changing. It shouldn’t need to be considered an obvious error for VAR to overrule it. Fortunately, it had no effect on the result.
