Mr. Balance, yep I see where your coming from now, the same could be said of diving/exaggeration etc. As well, until players are called out by their team mates and pundits we have a problem.
For me diving is blatant cheating, as is ball tampering in cricket, the punishments and stigma in the different sports is somewhat different though….Pagan

10th March 2019 at 8:59 pm #35512How did we get to this point with regards to diving? Was it really just foreign players coming in from a different culture? Or is not also the case that fouls have become more easily given over the last decades in order to protect the players? Everything is a compromise. If you decide to prioritise one thing, you sacrifice another. So you need to determine what you want to prioritise – protecting players or less diving? It’s clearly gone too far on the side of the players. So I’d say fouls should now only be given with significant contact/movement from a defender – that may admittedly lead to not giving fouls when there has been a foul, but it would cut out some of the diving.

10th March 2019 at 9:00 pm #35513My concern is the “handball”. Kick the ball against the defenders arm and shout VAR. Thats my main worry.

10th March 2019 at 9:12 pm #35515Mikus, for me when I was growing up, it stemmed (or my first citing of it) was from West Germany during Italy 1990.
The 2 main protagonists: Rudi Voller and Jurgen Klinsmann. I had a lot of liking and respect for Lothar Matthaus, but these guys although good players took away the shine.
I think as far as the Premier League went, Klinsmann joined Tottenham in 94, so moderate levels of diving might have been exhibited, but I would say the standout guy was David Ginola in the late 90s both for Newcastle and Tottenham.
Then it was players like Robert Pires, possibly Bergkamp too.
This might be worth a read:

10th March 2019 at 9:18 pm #35516Chucks I’m with you on this diving mate, all those marking excuses for diving are part of the reason for it getting worse. Every team has the chance to do it, there was minimal contact (ie a finger touched him), it’s part of the dark arts etc etc. Whilst people are making excuses for it or trying to justify it it’ll never change. Oh we got a tough game this weekend, might dive a few times & try my luck. It’s disgraceful & the biggest blight on the game, even more so than the who spends wins scenario we have these days for me.

10th March 2019 at 9:30 pm #35518Going over with minimal contact was definitely coached in this country in the late 70s, we had a lad at school who was in a division one teams academy, he was unstoppable on a rugby pitch, touch him on a footy pitch and over he went, diving was just the next step in the evolution of cheating…..Pagan

10th March 2019 at 9:31 pm #35519Good win for our mob, bit disappointed to concede 2 but good to score 4. I didn’t see the game but hopefully we looked good going forward & created a few chances, I might even watch a few games if we start having a crack again.

10th March 2019 at 9:44 pm #35521At least we have the pre match handshake though – so all the players shake each other’s hand out of respect…minutes before they go all out to try and cheat them out of the game. Is there anything more farcical in the modern game??

10th March 2019 at 9:50 pm #35522Oz, @ 9:31, just studied our remaining fixtures and previous results. What’s actually contributed to us dropping points and bucking up the trend of Win-Draw-Win-Draw is our away form.
Since the turn of 2019. We’ve only managed to win 1 game away, at Brighton.
Our fixtures calendar and the teams we have had to face in succession hasn’t helped such as Man City, West Ham, Man United, and Everton. Only 2 points picked up from a possible 12. I’m actually surprised our ‘deficit’ is just one point against City.
I never was swayed in the hype of ‘7’ points. They were false to a degree because during that particular point of time, we played our games prior to City.
Given all said and done, we’ve done well to at least reach this far. There are 8 games left and all winnable, but it’s sort of Baby Steps and we need to Rubber Stamp an Away victory and we have that opportunity Next Weekend. We need an Emphatic one too to set us on the road.
I would say what’s likely to hamper us is any new injuries and our juggling of the Champions League should we continue to progress into the latter stages, meaning naturally more games to play and cram into the scheduling.

10th March 2019 at 9:51 pm #35523Mikus very true mate, a bit like when players kiss the badge on their shirt these days like they love the club. An offer comes in a month later offering them more money & they’re pushing for a transfer.

10th March 2019 at 9:53 pm #35524Mikus @ 9:44, I was thinking just that. Add to your comments, the Premier League ‘Banner’ too that’s brought out onto the pitch and where both sets of teams line up. I believe they are well-meaning to begin with, but after that as events unfold and competitiveness and preciousness is in consumption, all the pre-match niceties can go out of the window. What’s important for the sake of sportsmanship is the handshakes afterwards.

10th March 2019 at 10:07 pm #35526Yeah Nil no doubt we’ve done excellent to be where we are, I’ve never said otherwise. What got me going with the “negative stuff” was when some were predicting titles not even half way through the season. I kept hearing how we were 7 points ahead whilst not playing well but the way we play had changed from last season & we were never going to start blowing teams away again, it’s just not what we do this season.
I’m no expert but when I looked at city’s squad in comparison it’s not hard to see they would handle injuries a lot better than we could & over a full season I fully expected them to wear us down & win the EPL.
Your spot on mate, our away form is killing us, we just can’t win away from home & that’ll be a decisive factor in not winning, along with depth.
I’ve said it a few times but I honestly still believe the way we now play is why the lads up top aren’t firing very well. IMO our best form of defence is attack & with VVD marshalling the D I think we’d still be better at the back than last season if we went full heavy metal again. I think we’ve lost that fear factor as teams know we won’t be as ruthless going forward.
Ultimately we will finish a very respectable 2nd behind the most expensively assembled squad in EPL history & that’s nothing to be sneezed at. I’d just enjoy it more if we were having a good crack & going for the win in games, like Sean said it’s like we tried not to lose a couple of recent games._____________________________

10th March 2019 at 10:22 pm #35529There’s still only one point difference in the title race.
It’s still far to close to call.
I suspect it will go right down to the wire and might even end up being decided by goal difference.
It’s worth remembering that last season City finished 25 points in front of Liverpool. It’s now down to just one point.

10th March 2019 at 10:32 pm #355329 it’d be to close to call if we were playing well, they are ahead & playing pretty good, we can’t win away from home & have lost our ruthlessness. They have a superior for & against & have a pretty easy run in bar manu, we still have spurs & your lot as well as a couple of very tricky away games.
I’ve said it for months, they will win it. Yes we’ve done awesome to push them so far but at the end of the day no one will remember that. No more from me on this, we will see at seasons end._____________________________

10th March 2019 at 10:44 pm #35535I thought City looked jaded yesterday Oz and the opening goal which was debatable set up the win. They will need to play better consistently to win the title imo. But you’re right Liverpool aren’t playing at their best either.
