16th February 2018 at 9:18 am #15738Paxo…. reckon YooUtd are punching below their true level this year,. but rest assured the “Greatest Manager In The World Who Lives In The Maureen Household” will be shopping for new boxing gloves this summer, because that’s what a quality manager he is!

16th February 2018 at 9:31 am #15740AnonymousSean, I don’t see 4th as a foregone conclusion and although I’ve mentioned a possible CL win , I am not saying we will win it either. There are only 2 reasons why I think it’s possible (still unlikely!) that we could seriously compete for the CL and 1) we’re good against the good teams. 2) I#ve previously said that ANY team who makes it to the quarter finals has a genuine shot at the cup. any team.
The quarters is where things get really serious, for me anyway. So, if I seem to be getting carried away , that is not the situation. My post here was meant to be a discussion about how much I like this current team, not about how sure I am of them winning things.. although I am confident that we will do better in the league next season, if we make 2 good signings.
We need a keeper and a CM. I don’t think we need a CB but Matip does have to get his shit together, he’s slipping this term, however Lovren is impressing me. I don’t agree that we need a new forward, unless you’re talking about just replacing Sturridge as a squad player? I guess also, if Ings cant get his match fitness up and start to finally score goals for us. . so ok I have my arm twisted here. . . but I’m hopeful that ings might turn out good for us (if he doesnt get injured again).
Chucky, that a good point about us being a stepping stone. Unfortunately we must accept this position. . but I have a feeling that it is a targeted role for FSG. I wasn’t too bothered about Coutinho leaving but if we go shopping Salah out, I’ll go nuts. I think the club will need to look at his contract in the summer.
If we do well in the CL this season and look to be making progress then I think players will want to stay/join. We souldn’t count our chickens with a 5-0 win . . but that kind of scoreline resonates around the footballing world.

16th February 2018 at 9:42 am #15742Good post Mak.
I don’t think youre getting too carried away as Sean suggests, but Sean is only happy on roller skates and wearing a mankini on the deck of his ship.
I do think its the inconsistency that lets us down – as we are too fragile in defence and we don’t have enough variety in midfield – I agree with Sean that we need two defenders and two midfielders and a new keeper – as the depth of our squad will stop us seriously challenging. Robertson and VVD are great additions but we are thin on choices after those two and wont get through an entire season with what we have – you almost need two full first teams.
Occasionally our midfield is too static and slow – Keita may help but we need to wait and see how he settles into premiership pace.
I’d take top 4 and a cup every day of the week for next season. Man Utd may implode (jose 3rd year!) and I’m just not getting the Man City invincible hype that we get fed by the media – they’ve been really good but there is something I cant put my finger on about them. I like Spurs, they develop every season and are getting stronger. One thing I do disagree with Sean about though is that Spurs outplayed us. They didn’t – we were better first half and they were better second half – they are pretty evenly matched. 3rd or 4th is our best bet – but I love watching us play.

16th February 2018 at 10:11 am #15744AnonymousCan’t fault any of that I guess. Yes, the midfield can lack life at times and Keita seems to be a bit of a live-wire, so I’m really looking forward to him coming. Agree regards Spurs, we were better first, they were better 2nd. I think we have to give ourselves credit where it’s due but also of course, criticism when it is also and we all know the occasions.
Signings in defence would be mostly for depth in my view alright. TAA/Gomez can cover the right if needed and we may keep Moreno (i wouldnt want this) be cause Klopp seems to see something in him.
Would you go for a new first team CB? I am leaning towards no but I want to see how things settle with Van Dijk. We’ll know more when the season ends.
with regards to the forwards, we could do with signing someone to give them rotation but we have Oxlade to cover them if needed.

16th February 2018 at 1:39 pm #15761There are reports of Pogba “regretting” his move to United and the relationship with Jose broken! L`Equipe reported it a few days ago,and that apparently already plotting his next move-yes you guessed right-to Real Madrid.Especially since the arrival of Alexis, the report states, few of the big earners are not happy with Sanchez earning more than everybody else!
It also a case of when not if DDG will go back to Madrid.United are nothing more than a bunch of individuals, bar DDG,the rest never seem to perform as a team!

I reckon the media have forgotten all about that though – we are back to constant eulogies about Pep and City again. I know you’re the best team by a mile in the prem, but it will take more time before we know if you’re the new barcelona

17th February 2018 at 5:26 pm #15842The issue isn’t always about how much you spend. those days along gone. the issue now is how wise can you spend? and a few club get it right every summer. if you spend over £300m and you don’t get it right. there will be no improvement in to your squad. spending wisely is the challenge.

18th February 2018 at 1:29 am #15869AnonymousYa, I’m very confident that Liverpool can spend more wisely than Utd. We certainly can’t match them in how much they spend, so we need this but our signings over the past few seasons have been of a very high grade, in general.

Yes you can’t match their spending, but you are also spending. you have paid a record £75m for a defender in January. you have offered Real Madrid £150m for Asensio in January. so teams are spending nowadays. no team is left behind.

In a follow up to my posts above, not long ago Liverpool have been getting most of their business wrong. you bought so many players in the summer of 2014/15 season. and none of them was success, only Can was good. so you can’t say Liverpool gets 100% right. the same can be said about Chelsea, we don’t always get it right, and may be i will also add United and Arsenal. City got their business right this summer. but it wasn’t like this every summer. we can’t moan about how somebody spends. take United that you are moaning about as an example. you have finished above them last season, and only 2 points behind them this season. which shows money alone can’t influence the performance. Liverpool is not on par with United but they no longer on tight budget like they were before.

18th February 2018 at 3:52 pm #15897AnonymousChelseaman, ” take United that you are moaning about as an example” , Where have I moaned about Utd? Far from it, I’ve said that we can outdo them in the transfer market without spending as much. You come off as defensive, for whatever reason.
As for bringing up the 14/15 transfers, I’m talking about our more recent ones but Lallana was a success, even if it was a delayed one where he didn’t really shine until he played under Klopp. there were a lot of bad signings and over-spendings int hat window alright. You were careful to say the summer though I notice, didn’t want Firmino in there I guess.

18th February 2018 at 4:23 pm #15900Makaveli, defensive as in what? i’m not defending anything. i’m putting records straight. i hope Firmino was signed in the summer of 2015/16. but you know more than i do as you support the club. Spending now must for a club to succeed. that is what i was trying to point. and getting your business correctly will be the most crucial jigsaw. since Klopp has arrived Liverpool got their business right. Mane, Salah, VVD, Robertson, Matip are all great players with potential to become world class. similarly Mourinho is getting most of the business right. he got Lukaku, Pogba, Sanchez, Bailey, Matic. and Pep got his business right. the Jury is out for Chelsea, Arsenal business. but i hope we will get clear answers once the season is over.

18th February 2018 at 5:02 pm #15902AnonymousI get ya. No Firmino was signed in the January transfer window but it’s besides the point. I should have stated that our business over the last few windows has been much improved, not seasons. . as the disaster transfers arent actually that long ago in years. .
” since Klopp has arrived Liverpool got their business right. ” – This is what I was going for basically. Klopp even salvaged some of the lads that we apparently paid too much for in Lallana and Firmino as the main examples but yes, our dealings have been really top notch since Klopp came in (in general of course). If we can keep this up, we don’t need to have the deep pockets that Utd or the likes have.
