It’s an interesting point. Did he buy Lewandowski? Can’t remember but yeah I’m struggling for names he’s bought who have really gone on to be main players in his sides. The same goes for academy players. He seems to have a reputation for being the manager young players should want to be tutored by, but how many academy players has he actually brought through in his career. Who has Pep brought through from academy to first team at any of his clubs? Busquets is a notable one but I can’t think of anyone else.

24th January 2019 at 5:21 pm #32044Yeah good points Nine. Certainly Ederson and it looks like Silva will become a big player for them, too. Mourinho has some seriously impressive buys on his list too. Drogba, Essien, Cech, Cole, Etoo, Sneijder, Carvalho, Modric, Di Maria, Varane, Ozil. Arguably all star players for his sides at various times.

24th January 2019 at 5:27 pm #32045Personally, I’d categorise it like this:
– Best individual achievement: Ranieri
– Best for longevity (continued success for 1 club): Fergie
– Best multi-club success: Ancelotti/Mourinho
– Best continued overachievement: Howe/Moyes
– Best footballing side assembled regardless of budget: Pep Klopp a close second_____________________________

24th January 2019 at 5:34 pm #32046Ed, Cech was a Ranieri buy, as was Robben, they were purchased in the January to sign in the summer. I also believe that Drogba was in process prior to Jose taking over. Cavalho was a great “bring with him” and probably gave him an insider in the camp in a good way.
The others were already great players, not unknowns/up and comings, Ranieri seems to be quite good at that, my how they laughed when he spent all that money on Fat Frank…..Pagan_____________________________

24th January 2019 at 6:05 pm #32049I’m pretty sure Guardiola bought Lewandowski. He turned out pretty good. Other than that it’s actually an interesting point about him not buying all that well in general. Buying well is definitly something that should apply to someone mentioned in GOAT conversations.
I know someone like PG with his profile would never go to Leicester, Porto or Aberdeen. Why would he? But he could go to an underachiever with cash and a great history. Someone like Arsenal or AC Milan. I bet they’d have him in a heartbeat too. If he went to a club like that, won the league and made some good European Cup runs that would be something.
As it is I think he’s the equivalent of a tall guy holding a dwarf at arms length, hand on head and kicking the dwarf in the balls. It looks convincing, but it really says very little of his actual strength._____________________________

24th January 2019 at 6:08 pm #32050Drogba was 100% a Mourinho signing and he had to convince Abramovich to go with it. But Cech and Robben were identified by Ranieri.

24th January 2019 at 6:43 pm #32052Speaking of dwarfs…
Q: Why do dwarfs laugh when they play football?
A: The grass tickles them in the arse.

24th January 2019 at 10:02 pm #32059Fergie represented the gold standard. In terms of being able to coach and develop the kids he worked with through the different eras, his man management, dealing with egos, the desire, ruthlessness and spirit he invoked whist also playing very attacking and effective football AND knowing exactly when to make a substitution/change, he pretty much had it all. And I bet his overall net spend wasn’t that high over the years. Tactically maybe not the absolute best (which maybe cost him winning more CLs), but that could be forgiven given his many other incredible achievements. It was raw pragmatic management at its absolute best.
Guardiola is undoubtedly a great coach and winner, and he’s almost singlehandedly evolved the game in recent years. But if Fergie was the best pragmatic manager, I think Guardiola is the best idealistic manager there’s been in terms of actually conveying his complicated messages over to the players whilst ensuring they don’t fall out their finely tuned groove (which is actually very difficult when you’re coaching that kind of football). And he analyses every minute detail including that of the opposition.
Which is better? You’re comparing apples with oranges really, but you’d get better value for money out of Fergie. When comparing different approaches like pragmatism vs highly tactical I’m sure there was an amusing quote from Fergie when he said something like “You can play chess for 10 hours and still lose. Know what I mean?”

25th January 2019 at 6:05 pm #32081AnonymousFerguson and Mourinho were financially heavily backed, it wasn’t always done in the open, please don’t come with those Aberdeen, Porto and Inter excuses. Those are also massive clubs.

25th January 2019 at 8:55 pm #32103Moos, you’re right. Soon as there’s a ‘New Kid’ on the Block to ‘Upset’ the Applecart, the Knives come out.
Manchester City, if not Liverpool, long they may continue.
