Ed, when you sack someone it’s a disciplinary process, they have to have done something wrong or consistently failed to meet performance targets(which is a very long procedure)
What Manchester United have done is buy out the remainder of Ole’s contract, Manchester have saved money and Ole is no longer bound by the T&Cs of his contract. The other option was to keep paying him and making him turn up to work every day to do nothing or put him on “gardening leave”
Leaving by mutual consent is a win win for both parties, Ole gets a big wedge, can start a new job tomorrow and no blemish on his employment record, Manchester United get the change of management they want and save themselves some money………Pagan

21st November 2021 at 12:27 pm #189317Pagan, have Chelsea never sacked a manager then? Because every single one has had a payoff.
Why would clubs not just go through the disciplinary process then if ut meant saving millions? Don’t you think Utd would absolutely destroy Ole in a tribunal with the legal team they could afford? Or Chelsea or anyone else. Abramovich has paid out over £100mil to sacked managers. So he could have sacked them all and saved all that?

21st November 2021 at 12:48 pm #189318Ed, to sack someone they have to be in breach of contract or for gross misconduct.
Manchester United (as Chelsea have been in the past) are fearful that they won’t finish high enough in the league to qualify for the CL, so believe a change of management is required.
If there’s a performance clause in his contract, then they can’t do anything about it until he’s failed (mathematically impossible in this case) and is then too late to rectify for the club.
If a club could sack a manager then it would, but paying out a possibly failing manager is probably more cost effective that losing the CL money…………Pagan

21st November 2021 at 12:54 pm #189320Just to take one example:
Chelsea Football Club can confirm that Avram Grant has had his contract as manager terminated today. This follows meetings over the last two days
Arram Grant got a £5mil payoff. So was he sacked or not? Chelsea say so…

21st November 2021 at 1:06 pm #189328Ed, having your contract terminated is different to being sacked, it means your no longer bound by it. If the employer thinks he can do that without having to pay out it will, but as I’ve said it has to be for breach of contract or gross misconduct.
Chelsea and Avram came to an agreement where the club paid £5m to Avram in order to do so.
Doesn’t matter how big a business you are you have to prove breach of contract or gross misconduct…………Pagan

21st November 2021 at 1:12 pm #189329I’ll assume you don’t want to answer the question about whether Chelsea have ever sacked a manager then 😉.
Contract terminated = Sacked

21st November 2021 at 1:13 pm #189330Sacked is merely the colloquial term for having your contract terminated.

No they haven’t they’ve paid Ole a year’s salary of £7.5m. To buy out Ole’s contract would have cost United more than £18m.
Presumably the £7.5m was the agreed protection clause in Ole’s contract.

21st November 2021 at 1:20 pm #1893349, Ed, obviously you don’t have much to do with HR, as for sky they later go on to quote Manchester United as I posted before.
You both obviously don’t understand employment law yet seem to be experts on it, “see you in court” is probably a phrase you get to hear a lot…………Pagan

21st November 2021 at 1:22 pm #189335Isn’t it why the usually trot out the line “left by mutual consent” … then they agree a pay out like oles one year of pay
Actually happens quite a lot in business where it’s easier to remove a bad employee and sign some paperwork protecting the company and move on even tho said person deserves fuck all

Evidently Pagan. Nor do any of the major media outlets. Odd, that…😄
You should give Roman a call though and tell him you could have saved him £100mil if he’d just sacked those managers 😉

21st November 2021 at 1:24 pm #189337Steve except the “easier” option in this case is seemingly paying millions upon millions of pounds. I’d rather take my chance in court and potentially pay nothing if that’s an option. Odd that businessmen wouldn’t want the same.

21st November 2021 at 1:32 pm #189341Ed. re Interim Managers if it works as well for United as it did for Chelsea I suspect you’ll be delighted. Hiddink won the TA Cup. Rafa the EL and Di Matteo the FA CUp and the CL.

21st November 2021 at 1:35 pm #189342The sack race is now officially renamed the “Leave by mutual consent race”.
Sean, what’s strange about that? They can’t leave it vacant. Somebody has to take the reigns until an actual interim manager can be found. While I think the whole coaching team deserve to go, it’s easier said than done. They can’t have nobody in the dugout for Tuesday.
