Chucky – Shows that Rashford is up there, though I’m not sure many will accept half the players on that list as youth players. Though that would include Pogba, Eric Bailly and Lindleof as further examples of Jose’s trust in youth players (when purchased).
Shaw has 1358 minutes incidentally – just goes to show how Utd are judged differently to the rest!
Lingard – 1811 minutes

1st March 2018 at 3:04 pm #16887Alfie…. that’s why I asked “define” youff!!
PS… my list was Prem minutes only, Lingard is apparently 25 (not a youff anyway you cut it!), and Shaw only had 540… 🙂

1st March 2018 at 3:15 pm #16888AnonymousI’m not complaining at how you have defined youth, just stating that I think you’ll not get many to agree with your definition.
However it gets defined I stand by the claim that Jose, whilst at Utd, will not be far away from any other top 6 managers record with youth, and better than most. As your stats show.
Mine was all minsutes played, but makes little difference.

1st March 2018 at 3:20 pm #16890I see your point, but for the sake of debate, I will have to mention the last month or to of last season your man was only playing the youff as he was both resting everybody for the EL, and “proving” to the board he had no players and needed 200 million to spend last summer…. other than Mac (who does look decent btw!), how many of those youff players have had a look in now there is something to play for?

1st March 2018 at 3:26 pm #16891AnonymousAh, so now we move the goalposts…
Rashford doesn’t count this season as we won the Europa League last season. Great stuff!
Ironically there is always an argument as to why Rashford doesn’t count for us – it started off as he was only playing due to injuries and so he didn’t count, then it was out on the wing so that didn’t count either. Now it’s because he doesn’t start every game and whatever else. Sometimes it’s just easier to go from what players do rather than why.
Jose wasn’t trying to prove anything. He gave a few youth players a chance of a game. Some did well, others not. Some will get more chances this season.
Fergie did similar, Giggs did it when he managed 4 games, as do a lot of managers.

This tweet is a fair few weeks old. Pep has a poor record giving youth a chance since leaving Barcelona. That could change though.

1st March 2018 at 5:29 pm #16895It depends how you define a yoof player I would say the genuine yoof players are those that have been at their clubs from boys to men and are regularly playing for the first team.
Harry Kane joined Spurs aged 11 and he received the vast majority of his football education there Christensen joined Chelsea at age 15 and won the FA Youth Cup at the club but I don’t think Chelsea fans could genuinely sing “he’s one of our own” as the Spurs fans do with Kane.
United have always been the very best at bringing through their own and continue to be so albeit that it’s probably tougher than it was even for them.
Probably the most accurate definition of a yoof player is any player who has played in a clubs Academy team and then becomes a first team regular ie Harry Kane.
It’s much tougher to bring young players through now from boys to men given the transfer budgets available and the need for Managers to succeed or lose their jobs.
Currently Southampton have a great record in bringing young players through albeit that the majority get sold but Southampton work very hard at it and have a very good set up of Regional Sattelite Academies one of which is in Somerset.
Chelsea have one of the most successful Academies in terms of winning trophies but struggle to get players from the Academy teams into the first team hopefully that will change over time and there are a few knocking on the door now who have a real chance such as Hudson Odoi and Christensen although only being at the Academy since aged 15 looks a really classy defender albeit with a bit if learning still to do.

I would regard someone as a youth player and a proper academy graduate who has been at the club for more than 5 years before signing a pro contract. McTominay has been at United since 2002, Lingard since 2000 and Rashford since 2005.
Chelsea and City have got a fair few good youngsters at the club. Reason why I said Peps record since leaving Barcelona has been poor, yet that could change with Foden. Same with Chelsea with Hudson Odoi and co.
United have got Angel Gomes and Tuanzebe, who are highly regarded. They also have got Chong, but considering he is signed at 16. I would not class him as a proper youth player.

1st March 2018 at 6:03 pm #16900How did I move the goalposts? Sensitive little bunny you… I asked you to define youff and then listed what I found online with regards to players 22 and under with regards to Prem minutes… didn’t even actually voice an opinion except my “theory” on why Maureen suddenly played a bunch of players who have disappeared at teh end of last season… 🙂
So, a separate sub-debate for you, what is/could/should be considered a “youff” player? (Not to be confused with a “homegrown” player!).
EDIT: I posted this about 2,5 hrs ago and it’s just shown up????

1st March 2018 at 6:10 pm #16903Will also add, I thought in terms of this little debate, I was considering purely on age, nothing about any angle of “home-grown-ness”…
