Wow, just wow. I genuinely thought this was one of those silly rumours that we get every now and again where one of the newly rich clubs meet a release clause for a top player only to see them sign a brand spanking new improved contract while stating they never wanted to leave etc etc.
The power shift from the traditional elite to the new money clubs is well and truly happening and I don’t know what to make of it. It surely means FFP is all but dead and buried as Psg are unlikely to have the legit turnover to justify an outlay like that.
Incredible when you consider United smashed the previous world record only last year to see it more than double within 12 months!

2nd August 2017 at 1:36 pm #2997AnonymousCrazy figure.
Be interesting to see what happens with their finances – did they get new sponsorship from somewhere, or will they blatantly fail FFP? If they fail FFP then UEFA have a big decision to make as it was introduced to stop this sort of thing.

2nd August 2017 at 6:46 pm #3001AnonymousRidiculous amount of Money. Mind boggling. That Pogba fee is looking almost cheap now. What will Liverpool ask for Coutinho now? £100mil+?
No doubt they’ll announce a new dodgy sponsorship to Meppershall it all FFP compliant unless, as Alfie points out, they just completely ignore it and hope to avoid much of a punishment

2nd August 2017 at 10:31 pm #3002AnonymousIf the Qataris are funding the transfer – which has been suggested in the media – then they’ll not care about a fine as they’ll just pay that too. The £200m fee is arbitrary to them, could easily have been £300m so a £40m fine is nothing (assuming that they fail FFP).
They could easily have signed a new shirt deal though and could fund it that way. Will have to wait and see, but I doubt this is the end to it.
They only need to pay £40m a year plus wages in FFP costs assuming he signs a 5 year deal, so they won’t be charged the full transfer fee in respect of FFP. The amount being paid up front to Barca doesn’t affect FFP.

3rd August 2017 at 9:29 am #3007Is that what they’re saying Alfie, that the Qataris are funding the move? If true, it makes you wonder what all the fuss was about FFP in the first place.
If PSG can pull off a move as big as this and still fall within the accepted limits, it makes a mockery of the whole FFP idea. As you say, a fine is surely the most pointless deterrent possible for someone who has a bottomless supply of money.

3rd August 2017 at 1:26 pm #3011Anonymousit is crazy money but i dont think fans of big prem clubs can complain. when you see lukaku going for 75m and morata for 70m its not that crazy in comparison. neymar is miles ahead of both of them and is in the top 5 players in the world. morata is still unproven given he has never been a first choice striker. lukaku is a good finisher but thats about it.

3rd August 2017 at 1:59 pm #3013The French league is not really watched all over the world like the EPL and to a lesser extent Le Liga so why would Neymar go to a country where there is far less exposure and fame, is it money? he already has more than enough money to have whatever he wishes. What he will earn in a week is more than some of us will earn for a retirement plan even if you have been working your whole life.

3rd August 2017 at 2:38 pm #3015Paxton, good to see you back.
You make a fair point, although I’m sure even Utd and Chelsea fans would agree that Lukaku and Morata were made over priced. Completely agree though that, in relative terms, the Neymar fee is not as outrageous as it probably seems. It’s a hell if a jump from the Pogba fee but Neymar is without doubt the most marketable player in the world right now. Smart, if somewhat overpriced, move by PSG which puts them very much back on the elite map

3rd August 2017 at 2:41 pm #3016Blaze, money is almost certainly the main driving factor here as well as the chance to be the main man at a top CL club. For clubs like PSG the domestic leagues are becoming less and less significant as the CL is the big prize.

3rd August 2017 at 3:33 pm #3020AnonymousThe fee isn’t that crazy. Crazy fees and a potential FFP breach are two separate things.

3rd August 2017 at 3:35 pm #3021AnonymousEd – there seems to be some confusion as to where the money is coming from, it will all come out in the wash but there is a story going around that says the owners are using their money to buy him.
La Liga have refused to accept the payment now.

3rd August 2017 at 3:38 pm #3022AnonymousMoney is driving this transfer, but it he may have a deal which states he can move on in a couple of years at a lower fee.
He wants to be the star of a team and he can’t be that when Messi is a team mate. He wants to win the ballon d or.

3rd August 2017 at 4:27 pm #3024Anonymousthere is no doubt money is one of the big selling points for neymar. the money he is supposedly going to be earning is insane and lets be honest, he’d be crazy to turn it down. however i think as said previously, he wants (and deserves) to be the main man. PSG are getting better every year and if he is the main man in a team that brings the champions league to Paris, he’ll be a legend as well! with messi and suarez at barca it would be years before that happens so moving in that sense is the right thing to do.

3rd August 2017 at 4:32 pm #3026Was this the moment Neymar decided to leave Barcelona?

In some ways, you can’t blame him. He single handedly brought Barca back into this game and Messi was treated as the Messiah

3rd August 2017 at 7:19 pm #3028AnonymousNeymar’s lawyers have now paid the release fee on his behalf.
PSG may look to sell a player or four to balance the books transfer fee wise, and cover some of the wages, but I’m sure UEFA will be all over this.

3rd August 2017 at 7:30 pm #3029AnonymousWell it’s really happening then. @Alfie a number of clubs will now be eyeing up the likes of Verratti, Rabiot, Di Maria, Aurier etc. It’s hard to say if this is a statement signing for PSG and a one-off or if this is a real sign that a shift in power is happening.
It doesn’t seem 2 minutes since Ronaldinho, another young Brazilian superstar, did the move in the other direction. How times have changed since then.

3rd August 2017 at 8:26 pm #3033AnonymousYep, and a few weeks ago Barca had a bid rejected for veratti and now PSG have turned the tables.
Can’t help thinking he is far too good for that league.

4th August 2017 at 9:30 am #3035AnonymousHe’s far too good for that league, as you say. In many ways, he’s in the best place for winning the CL though. PSG have the luxury of an easier league which none of the other elite clubs (Bayern maybe the closest thing) meaning they’ll be fresher and fitter than their European rivals in the CL.
Win the CL as their main man = Ballon D’or. It wouldn’t have looked as good for his image to be slugging it out with 5/6 other teams for the league title (had he come to PL).
