8th October 2020 at 11:29 am #168244Brian, amazing, so sad that getting to the Etihad is a bit beyond you now.
I think City would recognise the incredible support you’ve given the Club over so many years in the good and the bad times be nice if one of your family could write to the Club and explain why you had to give up your season ticket after so many years I’m sure City would react to that. Support like yours should be recognised imo and I’m sure City would want to do that.
If you can find the time it would be wonderful to hear from you on the most memorable City and opposition players you saw over that 76 years as well as the most memorable games you saw it would be an education for the majority of us on here buddie. Cheers 9’s

8th October 2020 at 3:23 pm #168247Nine..I am not sure all this praise is justified although it is appreciated. I am equally sure there are others with the same or better record than mine. The only years I missed was due to Military service and some time working abroad but have covered most of the years at the grounds Maine Rd and Etihad. I did receive a nice letter from City and a boxed 125th Yr Anniversary shirt which I was pleased to receive. It is hard to believe though that the club is 125yr old and I have followed them for 75 of those years
As to going back in time, well so many memories wonderful and sad times Great players, funny episodes and to days worry of fixture pile up falls into significance when the teams of the late 40’s played The biggest change I have witnessed though is the quality of fans has gone down, everything is tribal now, never appreciate opposing team//player performance and it is getting worse by the season. What has made me fed up is players attitude, agents involvement, VAR that does not work as it should. YV and media increased involvement, punditry, when they are drawing these lines and diagonals on the screen…did they ever think about that when they played? I could go on but it is boring to the likes of me who have seen the better days of football and crowds
I have my memories for which I am thankful for, even travelling to the match brought excitement once upon a time._____________________________

8th October 2020 at 5:34 pm #168248Brian, thanks for that I wouldn’t find it boring at all though Brian to hear your thoughts and memories of all the great players City’s and opposition Clubs and the most memorable matches you’ve watched over the years and I doubt any of us on here could make a contribution to the site as well as you could.
“I am not sure all this praise is justified although it is appreciated. I am equally sure there are others with the same or better record than mine.” Very unlikely Brian and I think you may be underestimating the affection and respect you enjoy on this forum from so many.
So much of what you say above I can relate too personally especially as you say even travelling to the game on match days bought great excitement and sadly the tribal nature of football has lessened the enjoyment of the beautiful game now.
I hope we can persuade you to share your memories of some of the greatest players and greatest games you’ve seen live and in the flesh.
I was lucky enough to see Cruyff in all his majesty as well as George Best how sad that it all became to much for him to cope with and Peter Osgood who before his broken leg was unbelievable, one of the nicest players I spent time with was Emlyn Hughes who ironically was responsible for Osgood’s broken leg whilst he was still at Blackpool then one day along came Zola all before the Abramovich era. 😊

9th October 2020 at 10:37 am #168261I will post a few memories for you, you mentioned Zola, well he was one of only two players in years past that I can remember, all the crowd, at Maine Rd,including City fans clapped him off the field. The other player afforded that by City faithful was Paul Merton playing for Villa. Both gave master classes in football in about every aspect of the game. They were also a throw back when teams generally had two “playmakers” and a “W” formation. It then became a fashion that you could not play 2 playmakers. Football has changed in sales many times even to the extent of teams like Wimbledon, Carlisle Northampton having an impact with there particular style. It was never going to be sustainable because in those days finance also influenced the progression and the t

9th October 2020 at 11:36 am #168262…continued….and the lower crowd sizes of the above clubs. During the War years there was a natural association with football since there were limited other opportunities, but crowds were large, well behaved and I believe knew the game well, plus, because of the War , every team had “guest players” City had a few from Newcastle and Everton from memory. After the war, the Divisions were formed and it was, what looks like now, a strange mixture of teams I remember City playing the original Accringtom Stanley and Barrow for instance,(good to see Barrow back in the league) Players drifted back from the War, some now could not continue and those that could had not many playing years left but there was enough to build on. City signed a player from Chesterfield called Billy Linacre, a left winger, never seen a player with such long spindly legs but he could score goals and I suspect because of his legs they werebroken twice. Similar thing happened to ken barnes, ex player, captain amd Manager, he was our left Half…wonderful player and never capped bigger part of the Revie plan than revie himself who I never rated..Nine..hope that is OK for you I will write on my favourite non City players later

Is there no end to your talents Brian.😊
Great read!
You picking out Zola it reminded me of what a lovely fella he was always having time for everyone as well as being a great player. I really liked Colin Bell as a player then for me it is David Silva and Aguero. Cheers 9’s

10th October 2020 at 5:41 pm #168277AnonymousThat’s why I like City too their fan base has always been appreciative of talented opposing players, you don’t find that at many clubs.

27th October 2020 at 2:31 pm #169191Micah Richards has urged Manchester City to sign former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge. Ex-England international Sturridge is currently a free agent, having been released by Turkish club Trabzonspor in March after receiving a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules. The 31-year-old scored 67 goals in 160 matches for Liverpool and 24 goals in 96 appearances for Chelsea. Sturridge also spent three years at Man City at the start of his career and Richards says the Premier League club should consider resigning him on a free transfer. MetroUK/
Makes sense to me.

27th October 2020 at 7:49 pm #169197Sturridge would not fit City’s play, in any case i would rather bring one of thE youngster on, enough experience to help him through a game. I would prefer someone younger or get Dzeko back!!!! He would not cost much and is always a threat in the box…useful at the other end as well!!!!

27th October 2020 at 7:56 pm #169199Good call on Dzeko Brian. I do think City needs another body up front in the City squad given Aguero’s injury problems.
