Sean, maybe, we can only speculate. But if we do try and get Sarr for £30-£40 mill, then there is obviously money there and the club (or Klopp) would effectively be acknowledging that we should never have passed up on Werner.

18th September 2020 at 8:40 am #166308It’s not as simple as that Mikus, it is reported that Werner earns 270k a a week at Chelsea and demanded a 10m sign on fee. Do you think Liverpool would be happy to make him their highest earner when he would be sat on the bench most games? Do you think if Liverpool matched Chelsea’s fee that Werner would of been happy taking less money and sitting on the bench? I certainly don’t.

18th September 2020 at 9:43 am #166310Pure speculation threeps and there are numerous reports that suggest Werner is earning considerably less than that.
What we do know is that based on figures supplied by UEFA from the 2018 fy is that Liverpool’s wage bill was ahead of Chelsea’s and the 7th highest in Europe and that is based on the the financial reports all Clubs submit to UEFA in respect of FFP.
8. Chelsea – Wage bill for the 2018 financial year = €275million (£236million)
7. Liverpool – Wage bill for the 2018 financial year = €298million (255million)
6. Man City – Wage bill for the 2018 financial year = €314million (£267million)
So Liverpool are no slouches in the wages stakes
Liverpool’s move for Werner broke down on the owners reluctance to spend big in this window and probably the uncertainties from both sides as to where Werner would fit in immediately v the current front 3 at Liverpool.
At some stage Liverpool in the not too distant future are going to have to rejuvenate their team and squad with younger players which will be neither easy or cheap.

18th September 2020 at 10:06 am #166314Why do you always get defensive whenever someone mentions Chelsea? I was making a point that 40m or whatever the fee was, was not the only factor. Why have you mentioned Liverpool’s entire squad wage bill? Your frequent defensive jump to anything Chelsea is a real turn off for coming on this site to be honest. I think one of the Utd fans said that before leaving, not 100% on the name but think it was Alfie? What you wrote has no relevance to the point I was making to Mikus.
I posted this reply before but like many posts it vanished but it had around 5 or 6 links to Werner’s salary, a rumour yes but a pretty strong one.

18th September 2020 at 10:58 am #166318Threeps, yes it may be that Werner came long too soon for us and it was not right for us at this time. But on the other side of the coin, can you afford to wait for the next Werner to come along? You don’t really want to be scrambling to find someone next summer if one of our front 3 leaves, though these decisions are difficult I admit and trying to keep harmony in the squad whilst ensuring we stay competitive in the long term is tricky.

18th September 2020 at 11:25 am #166320threeps, you speculated that Liverpool declined Werner because they weren’t prepared to pay him the £270 k pw and the £10m signing on fee that you suggested Chelsea might be paying him.
I just pointed out there were also numerous reports/rumours just like the rumored £270k per week you suggested that Chelsea were paying Werner that were much less than that and there were probably other reasons that Klopp’s previous interest in Werner didn’t proceed.
The reason I included the wage bill of the respective Clubs was to point out that whilst Chelsea are no slouches on the wages front neither are Liverpool and that if they really wanted Werner they could have easily found a way to do a deal wages wise.
“Along came Chelsea, offering a weekly wage of around £175,000 – almost doubling his current salary – and a £12m fee to his agent Karlheinz Forster, taking the total outlay to more than £100m.” BBC Football. BBC Football is consistently a very reliable source but there were numerous others too at that level and lower as well as the £270k PW rumours you have quoted realistically though none of us really know.
Personally I suspect that there were other reasons than that starting seemingly with the Liverpool owners not wishing to spend big money in this transfer window although that might be changing now.
As Sean rightly says “Werner is a Chelsea player now so it’s all if’s and buts”.
As others have said though despite Thiago being a very good signing at some point Liverpool are going to have to reduce the age of their team/ squad which will be a challenge going forwards.

18th September 2020 at 1:10 pm #166324I dont see as to why some people are making an issue of Liverpools need to rebuild their squad, imho they have another 3-4 years of their so-called senior players,in VVD,Salah and Mane.Who knows what players will be coming through next summer, and Liverpool being a major superpower in world football,is able to go after the likes of Sancho,Mbappe,Felix,Haaland. But,as shown by Liverpool and Bayern, you dont really need galacticos[Real,Barca,Juve,PSG],to win major titles. You just need a manager who can build a A TEAM.

18th September 2020 at 2:01 pm #166327Anonymousthreeps – unfortuantely it is a trait of Chelsea fans on this site. nothing is ever good enough and its always an attack. even if you compliment them, they somehow get defensive about it.

18th September 2020 at 3:31 pm #166330AnonymousLads, it’s worth considering that we weren’t willing to STRETCH our already taught finances, in order to take an expensive risk on someone like Werner.
I say risk because maybe there is something about him that the scouts think could have been an issue here at the club. I had wondered why on earth we didn’t go for Pulisic that time, when it was bloody obvious that we had been following him for years. I use his example to point out that the scouts aren’t always going to be right. That wouldn’t mean of course that they are going to be wrong this time either though. Time will tell on that side of things but it does look like Werner will be a big star here in the PL. Maybe they need to be more sure.
As for our wages being higher than Chelsea’s, ya and all the more reason for them to get them under control really, especially during a time when income has been chopped heavily. We pay too high a percentage of our income on salaries and this is my own thought here but I think that might be a possible reason why Peter Moore (CEO) has left. It’s conjecture, so don’t attack it like I’m stating a fact.
Mav, I dunno about 3-4 years but you’re not wrong, this Liverpool side is still in it’s prime but the forwards will need replacing sooner rather than later, it would have been prudent to replace one of them with a younger player this summer. Sell while values are still high etc. I don’t want to lose any of them but we’ve got to face reality, or we will struggle to replace them in years to come but as for the other PL sides now, they still have a prime Liverpool to fight against, not some 32-33 year old spine.

18th September 2020 at 3:35 pm #166331AnonymousMav, I’d have welcomed Suarez back but I am almost certainly in the minority. His wages would be a problem, his antics another but he’s the best player we’ve had in my time as a supporter.
The thing is, if you were looking to future proof yours team, it isn’t smart to sign a player who’s older than the other forward, even if it’s a free transfer. They would still have to take action about replacing a 29 year old with a 22-24 year old.

18th September 2020 at 4:03 pm #166312Nine, why can no one ever say anything about Chelsea without you getting all defensive? Yes it is rumored but there are plenty of these rumours going about. My point was not an attack on Chelsea yet you have turned it into one. My point was purely about Liverpool and why Werner wasn’t a simple matter of 40m or whatever the fee was. Why did you bring Liverpool’s entire squad wage bill into the conversation?

18th September 2020 at 4:13 pm #166335Mak-It made perfect sense for Liverpool not to sign Werner, without selling one of the froward 3 amigos. All 3 of em have been playing in the PL,playing together and know each-other,whereas TW is new to the league and it would have taken him a while to adjust to a new country, league, team, playing system, manager, etc. There was no need to disrupt the flow of a winning team,a team that won everything on its path. One more thing,mate-Werner is not Lewandovski, your team hasnt missed out on a world class player.
