17th September 2020 at 10:01 am #166258Yeah the Thiago deal looks done. Very good signing. Could never understand our supposed interest in him. He’s a brilliant player but having just signed VdB, central midfield was the last position we needed strengthening in. Already a struggle to see where Donny fits in, assuming Pogba stays.

17th September 2020 at 10:09 am #166260Anonymousthe bale signing is amazing and will hopefully take some of the pressure off kane. buzzing for it.
however. there is no point in having players like bale, kane and son if you don’t have anyone that can get the ball to them. winks hasn’t played a forward pass in 4 years, sissoko isn’t fit to wear the shirt, ndombele just isn’t fit. we need some creativity. lo celso is a classy little player but he’s not a creator. alli is finished at spurs, hasn’t been good consistently for 3 years now. if we get someone like eriksen then I would be confident.

17th September 2020 at 10:15 am #166261“Reguilon at Tottenham’s training ground as the Real Madrid defender closes in on a move to the club.
The left-back arrived at Hotspur Way on Wednesday ahead of completing a medical which is expected to run into Thursday, with official confirmation likely coming before Spurs take the field in Bulgaria to face Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the Europa League in the evening.
Reguilon is expected to cost around £25million, with Tottenham agreeing to include a number of clauses in the deal.
Real Madrid will have the option to buy back the 23-year-old for around £36m within two years and meet any fee Spurs agree with another club.
Should the deal be finalised on Thursday, the club will be able to register Reguilon in time for Sunday’s trip to Southampton.” Standard 17/09
Very good signing by Spurs although I don’t like the buy back clause but that’s what Real wanted to do the deal.

17th September 2020 at 11:47 am #166263AnonymousGetting Thiago over the line will be a massive relief. I still think we’ve got to sign a CB but if we keep Gini, that gives us a 5th player to cover the position, while keeping options in midfield. It’d be a bit too tinker-some for me though, so hopefully we can afford to sign a CB also but I imagine that we’ve only gone for Thiago because we’re selling Brewster.

17th September 2020 at 11:58 am #166264At that price, Thiago is an absolute no brainer. That said, if I was a Liverpool fan, I would start to be a little concerned that the average age of the first team squad is creeping up.
Firmino, Salah, Mane all turn 29 within the next 12 months. Henderson is 30, Thiago and VVD will both turn 30 next year. That’s the core of the first team there. Who are the young players ready to challenge the first reamers?
They’re going to be a real force this season, without doubt, but I do wonder what the long term plan is there. The moneyball strategy only woks if you buy young players before they reach their peak and sell at the right time. That front three all creeping towards 30 with no real challengers must concern Klopp.

17th September 2020 at 12:22 pm #166265Exactly Ed, that’s why I was always calling for Werner who is 23. To challenge the front 3 as they are getting on aswell. 29/30 still a decent age but I get your pint . Few years left in the front 3 but we really need to start thinking ahead with regards those 3.
Ox, fab, keita, Becker, taa, Gomez, Robertson all a decent age . Jones and Elliot good young players coming through but the age of some players is still a concern
All for the Thiago signing but main priority for me is a centre back and decent cover for the front 3.

17th September 2020 at 1:52 pm #166268Anonymous“FLICK CONFIRMS THIAGO MOVE
Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick has confirmed Thiago Alcantara is leaving club to join Liverpool.
“Thiago was an exceptional player for seven years with Bayern Munich,” Flick said. “It was a joy working with him.
“I congratulate Jurgen Klopp. He gets a top player and a sensational person.””
IT’S REAL AND IT’S A ALMOST DONE DEAL BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so bloody relieved. I initially didn’t really think we needed this guy but the praise online for him is just incredible. I don’t think the mass-comparison to KDB is valid but it is still a mark of quality to be favourably compared to such a brilliant player.
As far as the first team goes, I find that creativity in midfield is our own weakness. Of course squad depth is another weakness and a substantial one at that but in terms of what we have when at full strength, it would help to have some creativity from that area and not rely too much on Robertson and Trent. tactically, it’s almost incredibly important.
The only thing I worry about now is that maybe Gini is off. For me, he’d be the first name on the team-sheet for that midfield. I guess for whatever reason he wants to leave though and he’s helped us win it all, so he’s earned his move. Of course, I hope that he’s staying and that we start both of them in most games. It depends on fixtures and fitness though as always doesn’t it.
Anyway, I’m really happy now. This summer has been a tough one for us Liverpool fans but we may have gone and got the signing of the season in there, you never know.

17th September 2020 at 1:54 pm #166269Thiago is a very good deal at 20m with 5 added on if we win the pl and cl
Let’s wait and if it gets finalised
Brings something so much different to other midfielders. Very tenacious in the tackle as well. World class players and shows how far we have come in 5 years.
Probarly our most prestigious signing ever??? As usually we don’t really but ready made stars???

17th September 2020 at 2:04 pm #166270Anonymous“That said, if I was a Liverpool fan, I would start to be a little concerned that the average age of the first team squad is creeping up. ”
I’ve been very concerned about it. I’ve written quite a few essays on the matter. Like Sean, I too was calling for Werner and the sale of one of the others, to keep the value of the team circulating. We are in serious danger of stagnation in 1-2 years. FSG aren’t idiots, I know they will have a plan but I’m just surprised that it wasnt to try and sell an older player, replacing with a younger, established star.
FSG came here with moneyball but they scrapped that plan years ago. I actually thought they’d still maintain elements of the strategy but for whatever reason, they’ve decided to go the opposite direction. Maybe Klopp has had some influence there. I mean, Klopp has got to be just massively influential with them, as he doesn’t even command the wages of the likes of Pep or Jose etc and you know he could at this stage. Klopp is a project man though and perhaps he’s for-going finances for influence?
I’m going too far off track there but To go mto your question ED, there are not many youngsters who are anywhere near pushing for a place in the team, at all. Curtis Jones is the focal point for Klopp now, he definitely see’s something in him. After that, I don’t think there is anyone really, I mean Harvey Elliot perhaps but he’s too young and too much of a raw talent to even guess what his true potential is.
I’m not super concerned about Van Dijk’s age. We’ll never look to get value back from him. I can see us playing him until he’s no longer able to stay at this level. The front 3 though, they will drop below par at a younger age and their values will be dropping already. Of course their worth to us on the pitch is as high as ever but next summer we might get 50m for one, maybe more depending on the season they have but I wouldn’t want to sell Mane or Salah for less than 120m – 150m right now TBH.
So ya, it’s bloody alarming and we seem to have to make the most of what we’ve got, while we’ve got it. This signing will offer ,the refreshment that the squad needed though, it’s a huge step in the right direction. Get a reliable CB now, doesnt have to be a world beater but someone who can let Gomez know that if his level doesnt improve again,. he’s watching matches.

17th September 2020 at 2:14 pm #166272AnonymousJust looking at some more videos of Thiago. He looks absolutely brilliant but ya, YT videos always do. I will say one thing that kinda worries me, is that he isnt exactly entirely unlike Wijnaldum in how he plays, is he?
He seems to be very good when under pressure for possession also, with more in his locker going forward. Whether he is quiet as good as Gini in the defensive side of the game is the question. I mean, I want both in the side but the similarities make me wonder if this is a replacement.
The deal is agreed, as you lads know I think but ya, he’s said goodbye to his teammates and all. It’s just the medical now and the fine print I guess.
Im over the moon with this signing but I have a pain in my gut thinking that Im soon going to see a news alert for Gini to Barca being agreed too. Klopp knows best but I hope we get both.

17th September 2020 at 8:17 pm #166294AnonymousNot confirmed but looking strong enough. Brewster to Sheffield Utd deal is apparently done/close.
Rumour that Liverpool are going to bid for Sarr very soon also. This would kinda surprise me but I guess the closer we get to offloading the fringe players, the more aggressive we can be in the market.
Thiago alone makes this a successful window for us. If we sign adequate back up for the front 3 and CB’s then it’ll be an incredible window. Come on the pool!!!

17th September 2020 at 8:48 pm #166295Sarr is very raw and reminds me of a young mane. He’s pace to burn and I believe klopp would turn him into a very good player
40m quoted is to exspensive for someone who only had a few good games in the pl last season
I would take him though as he can play left or right in the 3 and is lightening fast

17th September 2020 at 10:37 pm #166301Sean, yes I was rather concerned that we seemed happy to let the likes of Werner go. There’s several trains of thought about why we passed up on him, but having given it some thought I think it was mainly down to Klopp who felt he didn’t want to upset the harmony and chemistry of the front 3. And I think the owners are quite happy for Klopp to decide such things. That may seem fine on the surface but as you and Ed allude to, somebody somewhere has to think of the future. And whilst you want the owners to have a good relationship with the manager, at the same time you don’t want them to give him carte blanche. In any business relationship, both parties use each other to the same degree, but are our owners using Klopp more? At the other end of the spectrum you have Chelsea who have a board who some may argue are overexerting their reach with the players they sign. It’s a delicate balancing act between the two and both should push each other in the ideal situation. Be interesting to see how it all plays out this season.

18th September 2020 at 5:10 am #166303AnonymousMikus, I’v always wondered why Klopp doesn’t push for more money but maybe what he gets here is worth a lot more than the extra cash he could get elsewhere. It must be, or he’d go. I don’t think anyone “uses” Klopp, in any real manner. The guys IQ must be upwards of 140, with his strengths being in communication.

18th September 2020 at 7:31 am #166304I’m not so sure mikius. I think we didn’t sign certain players because of money.
Werner was a no brAiner for 47m if possible
Ferguson made so many big changes. Getting rid of big players etc and replacing them
The 3 lads still have a good bit in them but we need to think of the future
