I’m not sure there is any disparity Nine. The quote you posted above comes from this article which is 2 years old
This is what Zorc, their sporting director said last month
“We are planning with Jadon Sancho. He’ll be playing with us next season. The decision is final. I think that answers all the questions. Last summer we adjusted his salary to reflect the performances of Jadon. In that context, we have extended his contract to 2023.”

4th September 2020 at 2:56 pm #165746All getting very messy now with Messi. La Liga and Barca adamant the huge release clause is valid. Leo and his father adamant he can leave for free.
I can see City allowing Messi’s team to use the same legal team that got City off the Uefa charge. Really can’t see how he stays there now after such a public display of dissatisfaction.

4th September 2020 at 3:02 pm #165747Ed, you couldn’t help but laugh if, following City’s successful appeal of alleged overspending, they then in effect appeal to sign Messi for a nice tidy sum.

4th September 2020 at 3:15 pm #165748My biggest concern about the whole mess of Messi. The guy clearly wants to stay but not under the current regime….he is unlikely to dramatically change that, so now options are available and we are one of them. I really do not want a player coming to City as an after thought no matter how good he is. I would prefer the money be spent elsewhere. Although I believe Messi is an intelligent person he must know whatever happens now , even if he stays at Barca you have to wonder if his mental/emotional strength will give it 100%, I feel not and that would be the beginning of the end of an icon of the game. For sure, he will bring in substantial off pitch sales but art the end of 2 years I would say you would be lucky to break even, then again, City have more management power to resolve these things than my humble thinking

4th September 2020 at 3:42 pm #165749Ed, I think that statement from Zorc seems very hazy it doesn’t say Sancho has signed a new contract to keep him at the Club until 2023.
“Last summer we adjusted his salary to reflect the performances of Jadon. In that context, we have extended his contract to 2023.” contracts are only extended when a player commits himself by signing a new contract not by giving them a salary increase and talking about “in that context”. If Sancho has signed a new contract wouldn’t the Club say that and not talk about in contexts.
But putting all that aside if Sancho has signed a contract until 2023 there’s no hurry for Dortmund to do a deal with anyone and as you say this time next year Clubs like Real Madrid, PSG and Barca could enter the race. None of which is good news for United and suggests a deal would be very tough to do in this window. But wouldn’t Woodward have known all that before attempting to sign Sancho in this window?

4th September 2020 at 3:44 pm #165750Re Messi hasn’t Bartomeu already said he’s prepared to stand down and bring forward the Presedential elections if Messi agrees to stay at Barca?

4th September 2020 at 3:45 pm #1657519s-Sancho has indeed an contract until 2023 with Dortmund, and as we all know they are not desperate to sell, after selling the likes of Dembele,Auba, and Pulisic for huge amounts of money recently.United has got 2 choices, either pay the full amount for Sancho,or look elsewhere. As Ed righty said, next year the likes of Barca,Real,PSG,City,Bayern, will.

4th September 2020 at 3:54 pm #165752Nine, I mean there’s no recent report of his contract only being until 2022. The wording is a tad strange but it’s almost certainly a poor translation. It’d be incredibly strange and ill advised of Dortmund to publicly lie about the length of his contract.
It was widely reported last year (a year after the quotes you posted) that he signed a salary increase. What wasn’t clear at the time wad that it also extended his deal by 12 months. That has since been clarified.
As you say, that puts all the power in Dortmund’s court and makes negotiating a lowered fee almost impossible.

4th September 2020 at 5:02 pm #165753Ed, I think what Zorc said is more optuse than a lie why wouldn’t he say Sancho has signed a new contract extending it until 2023? That’s the usual statement in such circumstances not talking about “in that context…”
But if the 3 year contract is accurate as you say that does put “all the power in Dortmund’s court and makes negotiating a lowered fee almost impossible.”
Had Edwards known about a 3 year contract it was going to be almost certainly “Mission Impossible” this Summer without paying the huge fee.
I think your suggestion of Bale for a year at United is an excellent one.

4th September 2020 at 5:07 pm #165754Messi announces he will stay at Barca until the end of the season. No suprise really because if he still wants to go next Summer he can leave on a free.
Probably the only sensible conclusion despite all the angst.

4th September 2020 at 5:13 pm #165755Has Marina struck again ?
“Chelsea will reportedly pay an initial fee of £62million to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter have responded by claiming they are getting him for a brilliant price.
According to the Telegraph, the Blues have managed to negotiate a £62million deal for the Germany international which could include up to £8million in add-ons.
It is claimed that the 21-year-old has travelled to London on Friday ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge, after leaving the German national side in order to complete his transfer.
The report explains that Chelsea’s director Marina Granovskaia managed to lower Leverkusen’s initial asking price of £72million plus a potential £20m in add-ons for Havertz.”

4th September 2020 at 5:17 pm #165756Absolutely no love lost here from Messi…whole thread worth reading.
Lionel Messi to Goal: "I wasn't happy and I wanted to leave. I have not been allowed this in any way and I will STAY at the club so as not to get into a legal dispute. The management of the club led by Bartomeu is a disaster". 🚨 #FCB #Messi #Barcelona

4th September 2020 at 5:20 pm #165759Mav, I think too much damage has been done in his opinion though, and will now undoubtedly still leave at the end of the season.

4th September 2020 at 5:27 pm #165760He might not leave mikius as new president comes in in March???
Still, he was never going to leave. The figures were far to crazy.
Best thing would be, he stays and had a great season then leaves next summer on a free.
I think he will finish his career there Now

4th September 2020 at 5:31 pm #165761Don’t know Sean, a change in president is not going to suddenly turn Barca around. Why not have another shot at big trophies somewhere else before he retires?

4th September 2020 at 5:37 pm #165762According to SSN’s Messi’s statement suggests that his Wife and children didn’t want him to leave Barca and were in tears.
A lot can change between now and next Summer including a new President and a new Coach.

4th September 2020 at 5:37 pm #165763We will have to see mikius .
I’d like to see him do well this season, finish on a high and leave Barcalona amicably and head for another challenge

4th September 2020 at 5:45 pm #165764We’ll see. I think the 8-2 result was the final straw for him and he’s really quite fed up now. Yes things could lift a bit, but at the same time it’s now alerted prospective suitors to prepare their offers next season for him.

4th September 2020 at 6:06 pm #165765If the opportunity to sign Messi does appear next season, Pep will by then be on his way from City which presumably won’t be in the queue for his signature. Maybe that’s when the serious team rebuilding starts.
