Threeps but do we write cities season last year as a blip and disregard the previous two seasons?
I think city will be back stronger next season .
Ed, I think Laporte was rushed back and wasn’t fully fit hence some poor performances. He’s the best left footed centre back around for me when fully fit.
I don’t rate ake. Might help in a back 3 but I don’t get him to be honest. Not great on the ball and poor in the air.

2nd September 2020 at 9:55 am #165642Agree Sean, he’s not the tallest so he’s not very dominant in the air but I’ve always seen him as being good on the ball. Think he could do a job at the base of midfield to cover Rodri as well.

2nd September 2020 at 10:38 am #165649Going briefly back to City/Messi, we can only hope that this is some sort of Messi/Barca psychodrama which will burn itself our shortly. City doesn’t need short term fixes like this. Its weaknesses are manifest and don’t involve not signing Messi.

2nd September 2020 at 10:42 am #165650Sean – imo City didn’t legislate for the impact of Kompany leaving. If they sign Koulibaly they address the defensive void but will he have the same level of influence on the squad. I dont think you can right a whole season off as a blip. I do think it will be closer next year, but mainly because I dont think we will be as good. Pressure off for me next season though. First time in my life time I can watch liverpool without that sodding monkey on my back.

2nd September 2020 at 10:47 am #165651Sean, don’t really want to go down the route of discussing City and the season they just had to be honest. I have views that some would disagree with but this is the transfer thread and I was talking about a potential transfer would fit or not into City’s team. I think they have issues elsewhere to address before Messi to be honest.
In addition Sean, have a link to Gini for 15m? I said as soon as Rakitic went it could spark a bit of a midfield transfer merrygoround with Gini going to Barca, and then Thiago going to Liverpool. I would be happy with that situation. I know Gini has much love at Liverpool but there were games when I forgot he was playing. Maybe that was a good sign for the role he plays?! I like the player but certainly never held him in such high regard as some fans on here and I was thinking for the new season Keita/Hendo/Fabinho would be our first choice midfield. What do you think?

2nd September 2020 at 11:13 am #165653Ed, yes it’s a good point about Ronaldo and Juve. And let’s not forget that though Barca have been in decline, they still have some very good players including Messi in the side yet they’ve been humiliated in the CL in the last few years. I remember talking to some Utd friends when Ronaldo was at the club and they always used to say it was Rooney who was the key player in that relationship because of the work he used to put in and that kind of follows Threeps point above about work rate in the team. That has ultimately been Liverpool’s biggest part of their success over recent seasons that minimised the mistakes in the Liverpool side and saw them get over the line game after game. As it is with most successful teams. So we should be wary of that. Yes of course Messi will improve them both on and off the pitch, but as Threeps rightly alludes to, successful teams are built on workrate first and flair second.

2nd September 2020 at 12:20 pm #165654Come in a bit late on this thread, but 2 points to add. One, the work rate of Gini added a huge amount to Liverpool over the last couple of seasons…will Thiago offer the same? Genuinely don’t know the answer as I don’t know enough about him.
And two, people saying that Messi signing for City would boost them off the pitch as well as on seems to me to be an irrelevance as they don’t need a boost off the pitch at all. With a nation state economy backing them, it’s only on the pitch that matters. As I said in a previous post somewhere, I really have my doubts that Messi will tear up the Prem like some suggest. I’ve loved watching Messi over the last decade, definitely my favourite global player, but he is undoubtedly past his very best, how hungry is he now to involve himself in a tough fight on a January night at Burnley, how big a change of system will it mean for KDB, Sterling et al, and how will they react to it suddenly being all about Messi at the Etihad? It’s all conjecture, I know, and although I’d love to see Messi play in this country,as a rival of City, I wouldn’t be too unhappy to see him go there_____________________________

I’m not sure I agree with that Hightown. Are you suggesting that they don’t need off-the-pitch help because they’re stupidly rich already? The problem with that is, of course, FFP. Despite the nonsense over the emails, UEFA are very much still behind FFP so, being as rich as City are, only goes so far. They need to continue to boost their revenues to ensure they can increase their levels of spending. A player like Messi coming in massively improves their ability to strike even more lucrative sponsorship deals, which not only helps pay for Messi himself but furthers the appeal of the brand around the world.

2nd September 2020 at 1:09 pm #165656I guess so, but honestly, does FFP actually still exist? I get your point about Messi increasing City’s worldwide brand image and winning them more global supporters, but that is again all to do with improving revenues, and with the impotency of UEFA and FFP I would again suggest that that is of very secondary importance to the sheikhs.

2nd September 2020 at 1:31 pm #165659Sean, I would say playing on the deck is Ake’s greatest strength his weakness is in the air. I wouldn’t have let him leave Chelsea mistake by Conte imo who interestingly just like he did at Juve and he did at Chelsea is falling out with the owners at Inter now.

2nd September 2020 at 2:43 pm #165660I think ake is clumsy on the ball
Lads. Basic lack of control at times but time will tell as he’s going to a real footballing teamEcho what hightown said about winjildium. He played number ten for Newcastle but is now an all round midfielder. Strong as an ox and lungs of a horse. I’ve never seen him knocked off the ball. He could score more but the amount of runs he makes into the opposing box and is never found is crazy
He’s played left in the front 3, sitting in midfield, left or right in a midfield 3, centre back etc. An absolute snip at 25m. One of my favorite players.
Could go missing at times especially in the 2nd season but he will leave a Liverpool hero and I wish him all the best

2nd September 2020 at 3:26 pm #165662In the likely/unlikely event of City signing Messi, I do think there will be an initial problem with how the new game plan will be introduced. I am sure it will be a problem worth solving, Messi himself is an intelligent person I think and he knows he will have to fit in as well, it is not a one way situation. Being intelligent he would respond accordingly. I do not expect he will play a full season and like many players of his age will have to be managed or the injuries start. I do not see Messi has being disruptive to Peps plans and anybody that does not want to play at the side of him needs to think again. Messi, IF he comes will not be with us long and I think he may enjoy playing here…who knows? I am also sure that any contractual conditions will bigger than War and Peace book!!!! The owners are generous, not stupid. risk will be carefully monitored with the sums involved

2nd September 2020 at 5:01 pm #165665Superfluous discussion. Messi will stay at Barca. Too complicated too much jealousy. Too many lining up against such a move. We need a strong CB plus. Papers and pundits can be happy to find fault and make up nonsense.

2nd September 2020 at 5:34 pm #165668Sorry to butt in on this thread, but if anyone wants to enter this seasons Fantasy League I have posted the link in the Fantasy League thread. If you have entered a team and played in it last season, you will automatically be entered again this year. Unfortunately, last year’s winner, Mr Mak, is no longer with us (in a forum sense, at least!) though his team will be in the league as he entered last year. Maybe it’s time to see if he wants to come back?
Anyway, enter a team if you like!
