1st September 2020 at 1:14 pm #165124Ed. Just to temper your comments about City’s trophy signings….Please check on who are the three most expensive signings in EPL history!

1st September 2020 at 1:30 pm #165133Adlab, I doubt either Maguire or Lukaku were bought as trophy signings to further the brand appeal! 😁 All of Pogba, Maguire and Lukaku were bought at peak age to improve the side. Certainly not to broaden Utd’s appeal, which is what I was getting at.

1st September 2020 at 1:43 pm #165140Iknow! Just pulling your leg.
Seriously I agree. IF we get Messi the commercial and sponsorship benefits will be huge plus an increase in profile._____________________________

1st September 2020 at 1:49 pm #165145Definitely. Similar to when Neymar went to PSG, it would automatically catapult City into a new tier of global appeal.
I can’t decide whether it would be as big as the Neymar deal or not. In some ways, it’s a much bigger deal as it’s Messi, for crying out loud! There’s no player bigger.
In other ways, Neymar was at the peak of his powers. Messi, despite still being an incredible player, has seen his best days already.
Either way, it’d be huge for the club and the league

1st September 2020 at 1:54 pm #165146He still looks very fit Ed and I watched him recently againest Napoli and he was excellent. Can he do it on a rainy night at Burnley though 😂
Be really interesting to see how he would get on the pl. much tougher league then Liga
I hope he comes. Be a massive test for him
I think the Koulibaly signing is more needed for city

1st September 2020 at 2:05 pm #165153AnonymousWould Messi pick the games he plays in? Would Pep use him sparingly? An absolute coup if anyone gets him and as a brand he pays for himself and the club he is tied to. But would the owners expect the champions league in return? Even at 33 he has more magic in his shoes than most players at their peak. no brainer if a club can afford him. I love to hate messi given the chelsea rivalry, but would be blinding for the premiership.

1st September 2020 at 2:05 pm #165154I think Messi would be City’s mid life crisis signing. It would undoubtedly lift them and make them feel good about themselves even if it didn’t exactly translate perfectly on the pitch. Many clubs do such things when they’re starting to decline. Chelsea bought Schevchenko, Torres and Morata after periods of success.

1st September 2020 at 2:28 pm #165164Mikus,I think there’s a lot of wishing and hoping from certain opposition fans re the Messi signing.
If Messi comes to the PL imo it will act as a massive impetus for him to do well and there’s every chance he will light up the PL for a couple of seasons at least.
In respect of the signings of both Torres and Shevchenko although neither worked out that well Chelsea were hardly declining at the time of either signing in fact Chelsea were in the midst of winning further PL titles ,domestic Cups and the CL and Morata was signed because Conte fell out with Costa and Lukaku had a last minute change of heart and Morata was signed after Chelsea had just won another PL title so hardly in decline again.

1st September 2020 at 2:33 pm #165168Yeah that’s a good analogy Mikus. Utd did the same with Pogba, buying him when we dropped out of the CL.
In some ways, it could be a bit of a dangerous move for Pep. He’s often been accused of not quite cutting it in the CL, considering the sides he’s managed since he last won it. If he signs Messi, he can’t really win can he?
He signs him and they win it? “Pep can only win the CL with Messi”
He signs Messi and they don’t win the CL? “Pep only won the CL with Barca because he had the greatest team of all time with Xavi, Iniesta and Messi at his peak”
With them being so close to winning it without Messi, is signing him almost admitting defeat in that they’ll always be known as the side who, under Pep, could only win it when they brought in the GOAT? In other words, Messi would get the credit rather than Pep.

1st September 2020 at 2:44 pm #165176Ed, do you really think City fans won’t enjoy watching Messi if he comes and that winning the CL with Messi in the team will be any the less meaningful to them if Messi was in the team that won it.
I’m sure opposition fans and the media will say that Pep can’t win the CL without Messi but if Pep were to win the CL with Messi in the team I doubt those claims will bother him one jot or the City fans for that matter.

1st September 2020 at 3:10 pm #165187Rakitic to Sevilla confirmed.
Possible that Barca will go for Gini and Liverpool to get Thiago.
If this happens it was odd that Gini started the CS.

1st September 2020 at 3:18 pm #165191No of course they won’t mind Nine. Nor would I. My only point is that it would do nothing to get that monkey off Pep’s back.

1st September 2020 at 3:23 pm #165195Approx 800 million buy out for a player approaching old age in footballing terms. It makes what LA Galaxy paid for Beckham look like chicken feed. They got value for their money and then some. I’d be disappointed if Abramovich went down the Messi path to be honest.

1st September 2020 at 4:25 pm #165222Nine, yes it may well be one mid life crisis signing that would still be worth it and why I think it will probably happen.

1st September 2020 at 4:41 pm #165232The usua bandwagon about Pep and the CL.. Yes he had a great side at Barca, which he moulded and I would suggest if you asked any one of the players they would back Peps management to the hilt. It did not happen at Bayern but came close. It has not happened at City, but one thing for sure, he will try. he also knows he has no given right to win the CL again no matter who is in the team, he has stated as much. If Messi comes or not we will have a good squad going into the season, I would have liked the CB position bolted down before Messi though. Listening to the Chairmans review which clearly describes the view of City heirchachy that they have trust in him and that is mutual there is no threat to Peps position but it will come to an end, next year or a further two years added
The CL Cup will go like the FA Cup into reverse and a new format will be with us within a couple of years, history will have its place…in books, what is next matters and as much as fans want there traditions they will be filtered out for a global TV game…Idonot fancy Shanghai v Miami at the Etihad!!!!!_____________________________
