7th September 2021 at 1:39 pm #184534Rover, why does that matter? You are a but rock fan yeah? As in “nothing but rock”? no point shitting on music because it doesn’t fit your personal idea of what rock is.
Honestly it’s subjective, imo guns and Roses are one the most over rated, empty and manufactured bands to ever have existed yet you mention them in same sentence as nirvana? You want your opinion taken seriously or what? π

7th September 2021 at 1:44 pm #184536I donβt get nirvana at all. How many albums did they have? Depressing music but I absolutely loved their cover of Bowieβs the man who saved the world.

7th September 2021 at 1:53 pm #184539“Appetite for Destruction” was a pretty decent album for sure… although the rest of their catalogue leaves a lot to be desired…
And the same with Nirvana, take out “Nevermind” from the equation, and their isn’t a lot left to put the fizz in your beans.

7th September 2021 at 2:19 pm #184542I have 1000s of original music from way before I was even born, just on my cells I have about 5000 numbers downloaded nearly everyone original, look I am not really a big fan of my time rock groups such as Nirvana or Gun and Rose’s etc. but the earlier ones such as Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Black Sabbath and even earlier ones like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Cream, Kinks, Hollies were all way above in a class of their own. This can be confirmed by categories such as best guitarists, best bass, best drummer, best keyboard, even best flutist old Ian Anderson. Or just check greatest rock bands ever, there’s quite a few polls.

7th September 2021 at 2:26 pm #184545That’s exactly it Sean, and while I truly dislike GNR I only went out if my way to say it to demonstrate how pointless it is to try and categorise like this. It’s not about what marketing term the music best fits ie rock, metal, grunge etc that’s all artifical billocks, it’s about whether the music can move you on an emotional level imo. GNR no doubt genuinely moved millions of people and so while I can still only like them for a few slash solos I can’t deny they are a great band with a straight face.
Same goes for oasis though, I grew out of them very quickly and can only enjoy a handful of their tracks now, but their impact was great and that can’t be denied by me or anyone else, doesn’t matter what the polls say π

7th September 2021 at 2:47 pm #184546Yes every group has left a distinctive mark many were great 1 hit wonders as well, but those early rock groups were unique and I say that even though some of them were around before I was even born. If you only listen to the riffs of Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Gilmour, Box, Beck, May, Blackmore etc, as one example. They were and still are the ultimate masters.

7th September 2021 at 3:20 pm #184548Rover I think it is folly to try to measure artists and art against arbitrary and illusionary objective scales.
I know we can all as individuals place music in a hierarchy based on our own subjective taste but the aggregate of the individual subjective does not equal objectivity.
Its no wonder the majority of readers of classic rock magazine vote the classic Rock bands as the best musicians or song writers, it means nothing ultimately mate.
Love all the artists you mentioned btw

7th September 2021 at 4:35 pm #184552Stone Roses, Loves spreads, the intro to that could have been written by Jimmy Page.
Guns and Roses, saw them at a half full Rock City in 87, supported by Faster Pussy Cat, both absolutely brilliant though, Mr Rose decided βencores suckβ as someone threw an empty plastic glass onto the stage.
Nirvana, saw them at Trent Polytechnic in 90, was taken by a friend in the music business who said they were going to be made into the next big thing (so not really manufactured then) they were awful live, one of three bands I would have asked for my money back (if Iβd paid)

7th September 2021 at 4:47 pm #184554Pagan, you mean hendrix for love spreads I think mate, its basically the voodoo child riff
Never saw nirvana live but every bit of live footage I saw was poor, with exception of the mtv unplugged session which for me was superb.
