Sterling wasnt playing in the last two games?
On the sports news it described Rashfords goal as being “volleyed in”. To me it was a tap in from a very good cross.
More media agenda I feel. Look – when England play I want us to play well and win. Dont care who scores. For England recently including the WC Kane has been poor – mind you he gets little service. But there is no media witch hunt as with Sterling. To me there is an anti Sterling agenda. Why? I think its because he left Liverpool and the hoards of Liverpool pundits have not got over it. Possibly some racism too?_____________________________

12th September 2018 at 4:08 pm #26217I don’t know if you can compare the two like that Adlab. Kane is not on form for England. Sterling has never shown anything resembling form for England. If Kane goes as long as Sterling without a decent game for England, he’ll too be the subject of a witch hunt by the media. It’s the way they work. Like you, I couldn’t care less which team any of the England players play for. I like Sterling. He’s just not very good for England in my opinion.

12th September 2018 at 4:20 pm #26218P.S. The media said he volleyed it in because, well, he volleyed it in! Not sure I understand your point there

12th September 2018 at 4:34 pm #26219Anonymoused – i see it very differently, at least most the time. right now kane isnt fit. i’ve been saying it since april. usually if he isnt scoring he is bringing so much more to the team. right now and through the summer he wasnt his normal self due to his injury, being rushed back by spurs, then not having a break and now complete lack of fitness. usually his influence on a game is massive, whether he scores or not, but i think this is the fickleness of football fans – they only look at the last few games. his influence in the majority of england games has been very good but the last few hes been poor so now. its hardly been ‘a while’ since he put in a performance. no goals in his last 5 (not great) but before that it was 15 in 10.
to be honest if i had my way, kane or any of the spurs players would never be called up for international football again. in fact if i really had my way, i would scrap international football completely.

12th September 2018 at 4:37 pm #26220Anonymousadlab – kane has scored 19 goals in 32 games. sterling has scored 2 in 44 and is on a current run of 3 years without a goal. dont even compare kane to sterling when playing for england. kane’s record is even more impressive when you consider hes got sterling (england version) supporting him.

12th September 2018 at 5:04 pm #26222Fair enough Paxton. As you say, football fans do have short memories unfortunately but I don’t think that’s a bad thing when it comes to judging someone’s right to a starting spot. Whatever the reason, whether injury, lack of form, unsuitable tactics, most of us would agree we want to see more from Kane currently. I don’t see any harm in dropping him until he’s back to his best. It sends out all the wrong signals to just keep playing someone until they get going again IMO.

12th September 2018 at 5:17 pm #26223Ed it’s not just because of his England performances that the media have a vendetta against Sterling. The last couple of years it’s been pretty much non stop negative stuff about all aspects of his life. And the last few months some more balanced elements of the media and pundits have cottoned on to this vendetta.

12th September 2018 at 5:25 pm #26224Jim, I can’t say I pay too much attention to the written press (in particular those kind of stories) so I can’t comment on it. All I can say is that I don’t hate Sterling. I honestly couldn’t care less that he left Liverpool. I don’t care that he has a gun tattoo. I don’t care what colour skin he has. I don’t care where he was born. All I care about are his performances for England and, for me, he just hasn’t cut it.

12th September 2018 at 6:13 pm #26225Ditto Ed and I’m frustrated that with his talent we’re not seeing it displayed in an England shirt but I haven’t given up hope of seeing it.

13th September 2018 at 2:42 pm #26261Pleased to see Southgate say he won’t be selecting players who aren’t playing for their Club’s for the October games.

13th September 2018 at 2:47 pm #26263Nine..a rather clumsy statement to make Nine, why? because if injuries or suspensions are happening to his chosen ones , just who will he pick AND if he picks them, say Foden, how are they supposed to feel that they are last chance choice. Not the way to encourage Youngsters to play for you in your hour of need Mr Southgate.

13th September 2018 at 3:01 pm #26264I don’t see it like that at all Brian . I can’t see how selecting a midfield three v Switzerland which included two players with just 40 minutes PL playing time between them makes any sense at all especially with Croatia away who where World Cup finalists and Spain away who have already beaten us and have just thrashed Croatia 6 nil up next. If you’re not playing in your Club side regularly you’ll likrly struggle in such games as Loftus Cheek did.
It’s a principle anyway not a definite and would obviously be revisited in case of injuries and players are sensible enough to know when they are selected due to injury and that’s the way it’s always been. Good management by Southgate imo which ultimately will benefit England.

13th September 2018 at 3:01 pm #26265Re Sterling..in my mind he is NOT a striker but works hard for the team He should be scoring more, for City, because of there style of play but you cannot deny his work rate. I also prefer Pep’s judgement over any media “expert” if he was not good enough Pep would not select him or at least move him out. He is not doing either. Sterling totaly frustrates me when I watch him but he does not hide like others would do. As to running styles, well, that is how he plays, at a good level I remeber years back City had a player called Albert Emptage, now he had a funny run and a step over that was comical but effective. Each to his own. I do not think Englands style of play fits well for Sterling either

13th September 2018 at 3:17 pm #26268Brian, 2 goals from 44 appearances for England is not Sterling living up to his capabilities imo albeit he’s not a striker.
Those stats speak for themselves mate without the opinions of any media “expert”.
I don’t want to see Sterling dropped from the England team but I do want to see him better developed by England and a better score ratio from him. Here’s hoping.?
