9th September 2018 at 7:58 am #26138I guess last night showed just how wide of the mark Southgate’s England are away from potentially winning the Euros.
We were fortunate in the World Cup to get to the Semi Finals which was primarily down to the draw, set piece goals and penalties.
You would certainly back Spain to go further than England in the Euros based on last night’s game. But two years is a long time in football so here’s hoping one or two new English talents emerge between now and then.

9th September 2018 at 10:12 am #26140Kylie-One can tell it was dogs bollocks,I mean an idea from a dog.Why cant we have a league of nations where you are allowed to play any player from your league?
Engerlaaaaaaaaaaaaand would be something like:
DDG
Mendy-Vertonghen-VVD-Toby
KDB-Kante-Hazard
Salah-Kane-Kun.
subs:Allison,Kompany,Ozil,D.Silva,Mane,Eriksen,Lloris,Firminho,Keita,Abumeyang,Stones,Walker,etc.
ps:just how awful and boring were Engerland last night?

9th September 2018 at 11:36 am #26141Rashford looked like our only real threat last night. Lingard and Alli were both quiet. I think it needs to be one or the other of those and eventually someone more creative to replace the other one. Shaw gives us hope in what has been a problem position for a while at LB. Real shame for him that he didn’t get chance to cement that position due to another injury.
As for Kane, his stats mean he’s probably undroppable but I haven’t seen him actually have a good game for England for a while. That might seem harsh after his golden boot during the WC but I do wonder if he’d be better for being dropped now and again and knowing he has to earn the right to keep playing there. It always seems to me like if Kane doesn’t score for England, he doesn’t do anything else. I mean, there’s no arguing with his goal record but I want to see him causing more problems for opposition defences.

9th September 2018 at 2:27 pm #26142That could be the problem Ed, we re building a gameplan aroung Kane, we need more fluidity than that, Just look at the midfield in our squad, none of them in my opinion are not good enough at this level, then we do have to wait for the next generation. Foden is a likely candidate but Pep will only play him when he thinks the time is right and that influences Southgate. Whichever way you look at it, three losses on the run now, I think and all because we have no control of midfield. Lingard is a worker nut far from this level, Rashford could yet develop, but it is an IF, Ali appears to be les interested now
Henderson,Dier, not good enough. I do not know where we can get a playmaker but if necessary I would look at the Championship to see if one popped up, I do not know_____________________________

9th September 2018 at 3:42 pm #26143Siad it earlier, the only time Engerland looked good last night was when the went a bit “Prem” rather than the “keep-ball” style, passing the ball both quickly and forwards rather than slowly and side-to-side. Everytime time Engerland got the ball, the kept is so long Harry was surrounded before the ball got to him… and the rest (Rasford, Lingard and Ali), were too far back to really do anything other than make late runs into an already crowded box.
Unfortuantely, I think Southgate will be dining out on the somewhat lucky World Cup, and be allowed to continue with his “masterplan”… and I think we can all see it doesn’t really work… I see another loss to Croatia as they are a step above Spain…

9th September 2018 at 4:14 pm #26144Ed-You are expecting Kane to become a Lineker? He is a Shearer more than a Lineker imho.

9th September 2018 at 4:25 pm #26145I’m just expecting him to do more for the side Mav. Most of the media had him down as the lowest rated player on the pitch yesterday and, especially as the captain, I want to see him more involved. It’s not enough at International level to just be a good goalscorer. You need to be a great all round forward. Kane is clearly capable of that but so far, for me, he joins a long list of great PL players who are unable to reproduce their club form for their country.

9th September 2018 at 4:36 pm #26146P.S I’m not expecting him to become anyone or anything. I’m simply expecting him to play as well as we all know he can. Being the England captain comes with great responsibility and I just don’t think he’s so far shown he’s worthy of it.

9th September 2018 at 5:21 pm #26147If England want to reach Spainβs level they need to invest heavily in coaches and the grass roots the way Spain did some years ago. It was another reality check last night after the summerβs βsuccessβ (which was ridiculously labelled as success). Yes theres a few bright sparks there with England, but there always has been and such players are then put on a pedestal as though they could single-handedly carry us to glory. Rinse and repeat for each new generation.

9th September 2018 at 6:22 pm #26149I’m actually quite optimistic about England going forward. We had an amazing 2017, winning almost everything there was to win at youth level. I’m confident we’ll eventually see the effects of that at senior level. The semi this summer was IMO ahead of schedule. We’re far from being in the top 4 nations in the world but I think we have a really good chance of doing something within the next 5-10yrs.

10th September 2018 at 7:58 am #26153I’d have Maddison in the squad sooner than later… closest (and bestest) player we have in the Erickson/Silva mold that I can see…

10th September 2018 at 7:58 am #26154Good point from the Ed about whose coming up behind this current England team but as we all know the problem is about getting our best young players into the first teams of our PL club’s young Foden looks like exactly the player we need to add creativity to the team but like Loftus Cheek at Chelsea Foden is struggling to get starts at City and I’m not sure how you overcome that one to England’s benefit at the top PL Club’s.
I also agree with the Ed about Harry Kane who despite the Golden Boot at the World Cup hasn’t looked the same player since his injury and having the England Captaincy bestowed upon him.
I see little point in returning to the hump and lump it up there football of the past we won’t compete with any of the top football nations if we revert back to that and as we saw on Saturday Spain are technically superior to England as are France and Belgium etc and until we close that technical gap we will struggle to progress.
The point about the improvements to our grass roots football is a good one but I’ve personally seen real improvement in that area so overall a bit like the Ed I think there’s some room for optimism but I think we are still a way away from winning something like the Euros just yet.

10th September 2018 at 8:11 am #26155Don’t think anybody is suggesting the return of hump it and lump it, but I think the last 10/12 Engerland games have shown us the “tiki-marsala” style of footy Waistcoat has us playing (one for Goose there!) simply allows the oppo’s to retreat back in numbers and highlights the lack of any creativity we have.
Relaying on set-pieces and playing “keep-ball” is never going to beat the Big-dogs and the World Cup run just glossed over this as the first Big-dog we came across bit our bum.
The best passage of play Engerland have had this year was the goal against the Paella boys, and you’ll note all the passes were both “quick” and in the vague direction of the right end of the pitch… this Engerland side plays too slow and has no creativity.
Harry needs a holiday badly so expect him to start against the Cuckoo-Clocks… and Ali OR Lingard, not both, that’s never going to work unless it’s San Marino.

10th September 2018 at 11:44 am #26156It’s definitely a concern that these young players aren’t going to get minutes in the PL but I do think there seems to be more of a demand from the continent to take young English players. Reece Oxford and Jadon Sancho recent examples and I’m sure there are more. I genuinely think we should take great optimism from all the youth teams’ successes and be hopeful. We’ve seen so called golden generations before yet we’ve never won as much as we did in 2017 so I think there’s reason to believe this generation might well be different but only time will tell!
