When I think of John Aldridge as a former Red, I always think back to that moment when Liverpool were awarded a penalty.
The roar coming from the TV told me 1-1.
Aldridge and the rest of us underestimated Dave Beasant and he pulled off a save. It was Wimbledon’s day that left me with a horrible feeling in my guts.
But although it’s delightful to see ex Reds get excited, I do feel particularly in modern society where digital media is easily accessible quick in escalation, there’s karma waiting round the corner.
The examples in Leroy Sane, Gundogan, Benardo Silva and many more could give us a rude awakening!

22nd March 2018 at 2:09 pm #18574Nine, @ 1:46,
a big problem with that comes from being extorted. And this comes from online tickets from 2nd and 3rd parties. £300 for ‘a set’.
I have no problem in principle for anybody from any part of the world to buy, but where does that leave locals?
It’s a certain type of fan too that we associate ourselves with from life experience and the picture we paint. Where is HE?
He’s had enough mate because he’s priced out.

22nd March 2018 at 2:20 pm #18575The thing is though, it’s a real catch-22. We all want our clubs to go and sign Carlos Kickaball for millions, and the money has to come from somewhere at the end of the day. If all clubs suddenly charged a tenner for a game I reckon the lack of funds will filter down to the quality of the team eventually… suppose it would be fair if every club did it… but there’s more chance of me marry Belinda than that happening.

22nd March 2018 at 2:22 pm #18576Nil, Obviously like all things ticket prices have gone up but you can get a Liverpool season ticket for around £700 so circa £36 a game which compares favourably with Theatre and Concert tickets for instance.
Buying from on line ticket companies will always be expensive but you can buy Bournemouth home tickets for £76 now if you’re not a season ticket holder the best way to buy tickets is to become a club member that way you’ve got a chance of tickets at face vslue it works at Chelsea
The club/ club’s market Corporate hospitality and Tourist packages and the revenue that create goes into the club.
When club’s build new Stadiums and new stands they prioritise Corporate hospitality because of the additional revenue that creates unfortunately the extra revenue often comes at the price of atmosphere.

22nd March 2018 at 2:53 pm #18578Nine, true mate, and that’s the classic case of supply and demand.
Chucky, that’s also true re the bit about wanting the best players, but pricing up tickets at extortionate rates to ‘fund’ for the now sky-high fees and players wages is beyond comprehension against many of the examples we see in the modern game – ala Alexis Sanchez.
For some clubs, they are able to generate income from more than one strand and we’re seeing more the luxury of tv money.
For other clubs however, the gate money is a vitality. Maybe this opens the up the subject of introducing safe-standing for a very small quarter of the stadium, where they can charge as little as £10 for a ticket.
I’m led to believe the cheapest ticket for the Foxes falls around £28, maybe a little less for an Adult. They also have right at the very top of the kop end, an area specifically for the old school hardcore fans decorated with scarves and memorabilia. You can see quite clearly too that the noise is pumped from them in majority and plus they instigate all the songs and chants.

22nd March 2018 at 3:24 pm #18580999…you’re being naive if you think football is limited to just 2 teams kicking a bag of wind about for 90 minutes. Just the simple fact that you’re on a football forum tells me that you don’t believe that. Football is theatre and is marketed and sold to the nth degree. If fans just rolled up and didn’t participate in the drama, then football would lose a lot of its appeal. Maangers and players are always exorting their fans to make their stadium an intimidating place, and as long as nothing is done that is dangerous or illegal, I’m all for it. It’s a passionate game and if supporters can intimidate the opposition, go for it. Do the City players expect to be politely clapped in to the stadium?

22nd March 2018 at 6:41 pm #18588Hightown, fair enough mate if that’s your opinion.
Personally I just hope that the best team over the two legs of the tie goes through to the Semi Finals no matter what may be going on in the media or on the streets leading to Anfield.
The Merseyside Police have warned Liverpool supporters that anyone found in possession of pyrotechnics and flares at the first leg of Liverpool vs. Manchester City in the Champions League could face prison terms.
Liverpool fans are planning a ‘hostile’ reception for City when the team bus arrives, with some unofficial Facebook messages even suggesting bricks could be thrown at the vehicle.
The more publicised message, shared by The Redmen TV group, has a less violent tone, but reportedly led to Manchester City expressing their concerns to police.
Superintendent Paul White of the Merseyside Police has responded to City’s concerns with a strong statement, warning fans that they could be punished if they are found with flares or pyrotechnics.
“We are aware that fans have indicated they plan to gather ahead of the Champions League match to be played on 4 April 2018 between Liverpool and Manchester City,” White said.
“While recognising that some supporters feel they can add to the atmosphere of the occasion, the use of flares and other pyrotechnics at and around football matches is a concern. We fully support the club in working to eradicate this dangerous and reckless practice and would ask that supporters work with us.
“The police and courts take these offences very seriously and prosecution can result in a prison sentence. I would remind people that this can apply not only within the stadium, but also in the surrounding streets and when attempting to enter the ground.”
In 2014, on a day when Manchester City fans impeccably contributed to a Hillsborough tribute at Anfield, the Eccles supporters club coach – with pensioners and children on board – was bricked by a group of Liverpool fans, and the hope will be that the team bus of the Premier League champions-elect doesn’t suffer the same fate ahead of the Champions League tie.

There really isn’t. Superstition/karma is all a bunch of nonsense.

22nd March 2018 at 7:42 pm #18593It really doesn’t bother me in the slightest what Liverpool’s players (Salah) and ex-players say before the tie and I’m sure the City players think the same way. They know, as us fans know, that their talking will be done on the pitch.
What does concern me though is the reports, encouraging intimidation, being spouted on some Liverpool fan sites. This has no place in football – the tie should be won on the pitch.
I’ve always had the utmost respect for Liverpool fans and found them to be amongst the fairest in football. It would greatly disappoint me if they resorted to such tactics. It would also highlight their desperation to start winning major trophies again._____________________________

22nd March 2018 at 8:49 pm #18595If the Liverpool fans did resort to this kind of action I think it shows more disrespect to the Hillsborough96, where most fans of other clubs fully supported them, to this day. This could well have a different view of them in the future. The authorities have had the warning from the Liverpool fans who want to make trouble, let us see what happens and hopefully the loyal and sensible Liverpool fans talk them out of it. Maybe Malby and others can talk about the need to enjoy the game rather than stoke up the feelings

22nd March 2018 at 8:53 pm #18596AnonymousThe word “Intimidation” is a very broad term and we need to consider that when forming strong opinions on the matter. I’m all for a rousing reception and would consider an extremely vocal and supporting Anfield to be intimidating to the opposition. I can’t say that I’m too enthused by the thought of fans getting organized in order to intimidate the Man city players as they drive through in their bus though. I’m not a huge fan of the negativity if I’m honest and would prefer that we conducted ourselves in a civilised manner.
That doesn’t mean that I am against us booing the Man city bus or chanting stuff at them. If it’s kept on a banter level then fantastic. If anyone throws a brick at the Man City bus then they are utter scum and should be banned from the stadium for life.
As for flares, I am not too fond of them now either but they are going to be used. Let’s hope nothing bad/disruptive is done with them.
I think that those organising a hostile environment should maybe focus more on building for a positive atmosphere for their own team. This is Liverpool, not Galatasaray.

22nd March 2018 at 8:58 pm #18597Hightown, I take your point but where do you draw the line? If it keeps escalating then control will be lost and it would be to dangerous to go to a match. The Home team will always have an advantage as far as vocal levels go but I do not see why that should be intimidating. The Players do not bother about it I am sure, most are well experienced in big events. There was a time, in my lifetime when you rarely saw a policemann at much larger crowds than we have now. Where I do agree with you is the tribal nature of the modern game developed by Marketing, media and stupid pundits
I fear the game will be lost in the UK and fans must share that blame_____________________________

23rd March 2018 at 8:26 am #18603The atmosphere on a European night is very much louder than a premier league game – wait and see, the place will be bouncing. I’m sure the Etihad will have a decent atmosphere too but it isn’t renowned for it.
If anyone thinks football is only about the game itself on the pitch then they should start campaigning to play games behind closed doors and just televise them

23rd March 2018 at 8:40 am #18604Nothing wrong with an intimidating atmosphere in the Stadium and the support of fans in the Stadium can make a difference but all this organised stuff outside the Stadium is in danger of getting out of hand as it did in 2014.
As a neutral I’m thoroughly looking forward to this tie, the PL’s two best footballing teams battling it out for a place in the CL Semi Finals. Let’s hope it all goes of without any major crowd problems and that the pundits take a responsible attitude and don’t stir up feelings.
My major hope if for two really great games that will long live in people’s memories with everyone at the end of the day only talking about the football played!

23rd March 2018 at 11:41 am #18609I think a lot’s been said without anything really happening and there’s plenty of time before the first leg even commences.
This thread epitomizes it and has sort of triggered the ‘infighting’ or disagreements between different sets of posters. No real need really, as we’re a very small community as it is.

Liverpool fans have greeted the coach many times without much trouble. Hopefully it won’t get out of hand

23rd March 2018 at 1:44 pm #18621Ye I can’t remember either Beni. Maybe a few people acted the prick out of thousands.
It’s people looking to create a story out of nothing.
The players will get a buzz out of the coach being greeted. Anfield will be rocking
Many Chelsea players have commented on the atmosphere in 2005.big players don’t get intimidated and city have many.
No idea why the pot is stirring so much. Gane is two weeks away
As I’ve said, if we don’t go through then I hope city win it

23rd March 2018 at 2:19 pm #18622I’m with Sean on this one.
I don’t remember anything from 2014 too. And I would have done and that would have been on mainstream news.
Yeah, and it does seem that opposition fans selectively want to pluck this piece of detail out and paste on here to make out that we’re a bad bunch of supporters.
This is spoiled for now my mood 🙁
