Mike Dean tries to pretend he meant colleague rather than mate, as though it would make a difference.
For clarity he actually said “Anthony is a mate AS WELL as a referee”! π³

26th August 2023 at 5:08 pm #208794Bizarre thing is, he thought telling him to go to the screen would have given him more grief?

26th August 2023 at 5:09 pm #208795That is odd as well, but that the fact it even factors in to his thinking is a disgrace imo.

26th August 2023 at 5:21 pm #208798Just went back to read 999s posts from the thread of this game.
“Good game not sure when pulling a players hair in the box wasnβt a foul.
I said I would be happy with the draw but I think we deserved a bit more today.”
βDermot Gallagher says VAR should have advised Anthony Taylor to take a look at the Marc Cucurella hair pulling incident as it was a red card offence by Cristian Romero.
Tottenham went onto score from the resulting corner from the incident.β

26th August 2023 at 5:53 pm #208803Itβs clearly wrong, and he is rightly getting stick for it.
I think what he meant was that as there were scuffles and arguments on the sidelines between the two benches, he would save his mate from the agro of going to the monitor to review a decision and, in the process, get stick from the benches.
Shouldnβt happen whatever he means, but that is Mike Dean for you. Never saw why people rated him.

26th August 2023 at 8:06 pm #208819Alfie, commentators I notice (I know obviously are doing their job) sort of add fuel to the fire projecting on Tv and Radio etc. Fans will be fans, but that is part of the territory of the environment Referee’s are in and one should be strong enough to quite frankly cope. The VAR is an aid which the Referee can use.
There shouldn’t be any notion of thought of ‘upsetting the applecart’ making a decision. You’re there to be impartial and do a job.

26th August 2023 at 8:16 pm #208823That’s a vitality in itself on the subject of Integrity and Impartiality.
Technicalities and Knowhow can be taught. The other comes from with in.
Trust is out of the window and you have to be quite frankly somebody bold. Otherwise at the very sharp end, the ramifications is a team Relegated or loss of a CL European Spot.
