Agreed… found a clip for you (apologies to Waspy for the video.. π )
Like I said, hardly any contact and a major tumble…

30th January 2019 at 2:21 pm #32465I think itβs a foul. Thereβs enough contact for it to be a foul but not enough to go down. Problem is if Lingard stays on his feet , he wonβt get the pen. Heβs totally exaggerated the fall but if he stands tall, he wonβt get the pen
Refs arenβt given pens for clear pens unless players hit the deck. How many times have you seen some players try to stay on their feet when itβs a foul and no pen given.

30th January 2019 at 2:29 pm #32466Yep based on the video above it was a pen and Linegard exaggerated the contact as they all do.

30th January 2019 at 2:44 pm #32467Not disagreeing with either of you (maybe I am, sort off!), this brings us back to the murky area of what is enough contact to make it a foul or are we simply faced with the “idea” any contact automatically means a peno? Cause that’s just not cricket…
Also brings me back to the whole the ref is the guy in black, not the asshole playing the game, angle. Big Jessie isn’t there to ref the game, he’s there to play the game, and in my view falling over like a big tart is not playing the game, it’s playing the system.

30th January 2019 at 2:45 pm #32468Banjo, I do sympathise with a lot of what you say. But the problem is as I said on the other thread, if we start a harsh crackdown on such things we risk creating new injustices if a player genuinely couldnβt stay on his feet (particularly if he had momentum) but was ruled to have dived.
In these situations the actions of the defender often gets overlooked. Now it may be that the action above by the defender was not that bad, but if you look at the whole incident why is the defender putting his arm across Lingard in the first place? This is the action of a desperate defender who has lost his man. And then look immediately after the incident – he holds his hands up as though he hasnβt done anything (when he has). It may still be soft, but itβs the defender that has ultimately created the opportunity for Lingard to go down by way of a desperate action.* Late edit: Can one really feel sorry for the defender in such a situation?

30th January 2019 at 2:48 pm #32470All true Chucky but they all do it inc Sir Harry and I’m not sure how you stop players over exaggerating if they feel contact. First step has to be tackling the problems of those that do it often without any contact at all.

30th January 2019 at 3:13 pm #32475Absolutely Sir Harry does it, they all bloody do it…
But carrying on with other comments made, it seems to me the defenders can’t really do anything these days, it’s advantage attackers in all scenario’s… arms not tucked in shorts and tickling your own nuts? Peno… sneezed in the generally direction? Peno… standing still so an attacker can run into you? Peno… attackers kick the ball out of play/away from goal and has lost total control? Peno…
Still say Peno’s should be given only when goal scoring opportunities are actually denied, not just because it happens in the box… that should at least stop a majority of the “collapse’s” that go on from players who are so obviously fishing for it in the first place.

30th January 2019 at 3:17 pm #32477It’s almost like two different games, the one inside the box, and another one outside the box…

30th January 2019 at 3:23 pm #32478Just to add – the action by the defender may not have been enough for Lingard to go down – however, the desperate (and arguably unfair) actions arguably were enough for Lingard to lose concentration in possession of the ball for a few seconds in a crucial area of the pitch. Should that not be punished? Supppse Lingard *hadnβt* gone down. Would his movement towards goal still not have been compromised compared to if the defender had never tried to arm lunge him out the way? There are obviously fair ways a defender can use to compromise an attackers flow (using their body) and there are unfair ways (desperate lunges).

30th January 2019 at 3:24 pm #32479AnonymousThis season is ” One of them seasons” Liverpool have gone about winning the title the right way, playing open attacking football which is easy on the eye.
Their title chasing rivals just get close but lose and drop back, Liverpool’s long overdue Premiership Title is now in the lap of the gods.2 or 3 major injuries could still happen ,but I think this is just meant be their year._____________________________

30th January 2019 at 3:29 pm #32480Bricklayers, still got a fair bit to go mate before we can start thinking that way.
Too many let downs in the past and weirdly, Fernandino’s unexpected error reminded me of Gerrard’s slip.
Those in the Press, Commentary Box, and those writing in the ‘column inches’ thrive on the Theatre and drama mate, but as you know, it’s not nice when you’re on the wrong end of it.
Cheers

30th January 2019 at 3:58 pm #32483Micky… it seems to the only “fair” thing a defender can do these days is absolutely 100% cleanly win the ball without any single piece of anatomy coming within 6 inches of an attackers ego… it will be like netball of Aussie rules soon, touch the ball in the peno box and get a “free” kick without the hassle of defenders defending…

30th January 2019 at 4:48 pm #32484Lingard certainly made a meal of that last night. I think it would have been given regardless but that’s beside the point. Don’t like seeing players exaggerate falls like that but the amount of players who don’t do that is almost non existent now.

30th January 2019 at 5:11 pm #32486Perhaps so Banjo, but I do think in the cases where a defender is lunging (be it with their arm or leg), it’s basically a sign that it’s a desperate last ditch action and such actions are always going to be more risky. So I have less sympathy with the defenders in such situations.

30th January 2019 at 6:40 pm #32487Quite eager for the Team-sheets to be unveiled. I would actually like Shaqiri to start – just a lovely happy guy bringing spark but also goals and in any case threat to the opposition.
The attending supporters need to be vocal tonight and do their bit.
Come On The Redmen!!

30th January 2019 at 7:15 pm #32488Micky… got no issue with that, desperate measures are genuine fouls, don’t think anybody as an issue with that, but to use Big Jessie-gate as an example, I don’t think the defender’s actions fit into the “desperate lunge” debate, the reaction did not fit with the contact, ergo complete overreaction, ergo cheating just as much as the defender may have been…
Still like my idea of punishing both, get your peno you so desperately want and technically deserve, then get a two-game ban (Goldie’s idea!) for being a prat… π

Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Kieta (so it seems in defensive duties).
Henderson, Shaqiri, Wijnaldum
Mane, Salah, Firmino
Fabz on the Bench. Had a feeling Shaqs would start tonight. Assured with this coming across as a balanced first 11 and a strong line up (under the circumstances).
