Red, it’s a shame on Southampton giving up so easy, I remember one game we also had 9 players against 14 for virtually the whole game we only lost 2-0 and both goals came late in the 2nd half.

No I agree Sean and I’m certainly not writing a player of Thiago’s quality off. I do think experienced players like him should carry a certain expectation though in terms of being able to hit the ground running. You expect a certain settling in period with young players but more experienced and/or expensive players naturally carry more expectation, hence the increased pressure on the likes of Thiago and Havertz/Werner for example. Way too early to write them off but I don’t think it’s too soon to question their performances so far. Thiago is a brilliant player though, regardless.

Yeah I’m aware they tried to keep Thiago. They tried to keep Hargreaves and Schweinsteiger, too, if I recall correctly. My point is whether they went all out to keep these players or whether they knew they were no longer able to perform to the levels required and only offered something half-heartedly. I’ve no idea if that’s the case. I’m just saying it’s very reminiscent of the top players we thought we’d signed from them, only to have our fingers burnt.

Completely agree Sean. As I say, I think you’ll still get second, even with the injuries. Still think Thiago will come good, too. Every team has blips. People are far to quick these days though to label blips as crises or collapses.

My beef with our midfield was that we needed more dribblers to drive forward and score more goals and share the burden. Thiago is more like a Xabi Alonso, something we weren’t particularly short of. But when he became available, I just think the club perhaps felt he was too good to turn down.

Will be interesting to see how Tommy Tickle’s team ethos is coming together against what will probably be a more attacking team than his first games. For me again the result is not really as important as the development of the team. Hopefully we’ll be organised at the back but not as ponderous going forward as we have been…..Pagan
