What gets me Mak is whilst racism obviously gets rightly flagged up any time it raises its head (as well as coin throwing), all other non racist abuse is effectively just accepted as part of the game. I think the commentator said Salah was just being goaded by some of the Everton fans last night, as though that’s just a normal part of the game to be tolerated.
If people really want to know why racism still exists, it’s because it’s rooted in the general hatred that is in the stands. Crazy to criticise one part of that hatred, but accept the other. Until all abuse is criticised, nothing will change. But I think part of it is that culturally, many fans think it’s acceptable to hurl abuse because it’s all part of letting their hair down and cleansing themselves of any inner frustrations. But it isn’t.

2nd December 2021 at 12:24 pm #190424Many fans think hating others is acceptable as a show of the love or pride of their team. Not just football either, can just look at the American elections or Brexit for examples where people feel justified in showing hate towards those that oppose them. It’s the sad state of our society and seems to be getting worse.

2nd December 2021 at 1:20 pm #190426I think the “hatred” shown at football matches is a lot to do with mob-mentality… sure, a certain section of anybody’s fans are Arsenal’s and always will be Arsenal’s, but a far greater percentage of the crowd wouldn’t dream of behaving like that down the “High Street”, they just enter the stadium and get caught up with things… not condonning it for one second mind you!

2nd December 2021 at 1:24 pm #190427Some players are just universally accepted and loved by fans. E.g. Torres was still respected by Liverpool fans. Some fans feel the hurt when a player for example forces a move, e.g. Sterling, and the manner in the way those course of events pan out.
They will be booed at the grounds, and some places are hostile. We may be appalled by it even in the 21st century, but it will continue to happen.

2nd December 2021 at 1:43 pm #190428I have always viewed it as almost pantomime you know? Or wrestling, where its just part of the show for home fans to make life as difficult as possible for away fans by booing and goading players with as much nonsense as possible.
Having said that there are certainly limits to that and abuse based on protected characteristics such as race eg are certainly over the line.
I think villa fans are out of their minds booing Jack. The lad stuck with them for years, played massive part in getting them back to PL and scored the goal that saved them from relegation, before then moving to arguably best side in the world right now with 100m going to his home club who he clearly loves.
Surely they should have shown him respect have hoped he would return for final few years of his career?

2nd December 2021 at 2:18 pm #190430I wonder, if in Sexy Calf’s case, if the booing wouldn’t have been so bad if he didn’t go a “New Money Club”? Perhaps if he had gone to one of the larger mid-table clubs like YooUtd or LiVARberoOol?

2nd December 2021 at 2:37 pm #190431It’s probably just projecting your own mentality onto thousands of villa fans.
100m is 100m and no reason to think if utd bought him for 100m he would not have been booed.

2nd December 2021 at 2:39 pm #190432In fact banjo if he had joined a club like spurs for the money rather than a top side like city for money and glory, there would be even more reason to boo imo.
The problem with shifting upwards banjo is gravity…..

2nd December 2021 at 3:14 pm #190435Obviously he’s going to get booed, he’s left a proper club to join a “fake” club, and even if he joined YooUtd, he’d still get booed, because it’s YooUtd, and that’s still worth booing just for fun…
As for shitting upwards, I’m from the thunder downunder, so it still falls the wrong way, regardless… you get used to it after a while whichever way up you are regardless of which way your ladder is levelled.

2nd December 2021 at 3:43 pm #190436Nah banjo, that wasn’t your point anyway… your point was he was booed because of who he joined, I think that’s bs, what other prem club could he have joined for 100m and not get booed then?
Like I said if he joined an also ran like spurs for the money imo that would be more hurtful to villa fans than joining a team like city when the chance of silverware is also a major incentive.

2nd December 2021 at 3:45 pm #190437The pure hate in Everton fans last night Mikus was disturbing. Liveroool fans do the same but Salah lives his life right. He was getting stuff thrown at him and abused. No idea how players restrain themselves. I’d jump in and start round housing people in the throat
Aberdeen player gets sent off for a Dundee utd fan pushing him. Crazy

2nd December 2021 at 3:52 pm #190438Couldn’t agree more Lucky. Imagine the Villa fans’ fury if he turned up at 3 Point Lane holding up the white shirt 😂. At least people can say he’s gone to challenge himself and compete against the very best in the CL. For clarity, when I write CL, I obviously mean Champions League, not Conference League…

2nd December 2021 at 4:17 pm #190440Benitez was a silly appointment by Everton in the first place and he needed a good results in the first half of the season and Everton have been on a terrible run lately even before the Liverpool game.
Rafa needs his injured players back and probably a bit of a dip into the transfer market in January even if just for a loan signing or two.
I think Everton will give Rafa a bit more time yet though to turn things around.

2nd December 2021 at 4:21 pm #190441This is it Sean. I accept a bit of banter is part of the pantomime of it all. But to hurl abuse with the venom that some fans do, that’s just hatred and anger and is ultimately dehumanising. And it should be condemned. But I rarely see it condemned.

2nd December 2021 at 4:54 pm #190444Nine, the only issue I could raise against Everton appointing Rafael was the fact he once managed pool, granted that’s rather a big issue given the rivalry, but I don’t think the appointment was silly at the time.
Hard to argue that at this point given the results though but just look how little he had to recruit in summer and the injuries he is contending with.
Like you I think he deserves more time but its looking ominous for him. I have sympathy in light of the circumstances.
Maybe he is another manager time has passed by I can’t give a strong argument against that and while I think once he was elite it certainly can’t be said now.
