….people need to get back to discussing football.
In respect of Chelsea they were never ever charged with breaking any FFP rules and operated within the FFP rules season after season.

20th October 2022 at 2:19 pm #200158And I always thought the rules were implemented due to Chelsea’s “cab ride”, so rather than being in breach of them, they were in fact the cause of them (so Puppy isn’t wrong when he says they didn’t break them…. π )
Buffy does make a good point though. My persective, however, would agree that there has always been a team at the top of the financial tree, but it’s the sheer scope that has changed and the level of wealth, and most imporrtantly, where that wealth has come from.
We’ve gone from the wealthiest being a family with ties to the area and a love for a club, like the Moores with Liverpool, to local bussinessmen buying there local club for one last “piss-up” like Walker with Blackburn, to dodgy billionarries needing some sort of clever tax break and buying whatever club they spotted out of their helicoptor like Roman with Chelsea, to what we have today, which is soverign states with very questionable reputations buying up clubs in an effort to what is commonlly referred to as sports-washing…
I, for one, had no real issues with the Moore’s and Walkers of the world, as every club up and down the country had the option/possibility of being able to compete… did not like it when Chelsea did their mad dash for a few years and bought everybody who could kick a ball for inflated prices, as this started to limit the competition, and I most certainly do not like the questionable soverign states buying up clubs in a desperate attempt as “sports-washing” because a) they are disgusting regimes and b) they have basically killed the competition now.
How many times has PSG won it? How many times as City won it? How long before it’s a regular two-horse race between UAE and Saudi Arabia to win the Prem?

20th October 2022 at 2:35 pm #200161Net spend is a very agenda driven way to measure return on transfer spend, but I’m not sure there is a better one. Most of us can choose a cut off point to suit our argument depending on what we want to prove. What net spend doesn’t cover is total football expenditure. For example, how much have City spent to basically hoover up global clubs and build the best facilities and staff money can buy in every aspect of their club? I’m not knocking that but it goes without saying that the team with the best facilities are not going to need to spend as much as a similar club with crap facilities. If City and a similar stature club go for the same player and offer the same wage, the player goes to City because it’s a better place to develop. That advantage comes at a cost, too, but that cost is never factored into these discussions.

20th October 2022 at 2:44 pm #200162You also can’t compare what Guardiola has done to the likes of Klopp and Ferguson. Klopp took over an absolute mess of a club. Ferguson took over a club who had a net spend of -Β£1.5mil in the 5 years preceding his appointment and Β£14mil total in the 5 years post his appointment (both Spurs and Liverpool spent more during this period). Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, Spurs and even Man City outspent Utd massively during the period 92-98. Guardiola is a fantastic coach. Probably the best in the world, but he took over a club who had spent enormously to get where they are and continued to spend enormously since, albeit it has naturally slowed down because they now only need small refinements because of previous expenditure. There’s every chance he would have been successful anyway but we may never know as he’s never had to sell players or had to sell to buy. He sells players who he no longer needs.

20th October 2022 at 3:40 pm #200163Man utd, Liverpool even Nottingham Forest spent big in the past but not on the scale we are now seeing with City. In the case of Liverpool and Utd a lot of that money would be self generated, they were already big clubs that expanded.
City, Chelsea, PSG, RBL, Hoffenheim (the last 2 to a much lesser scale, probably loads more) all bought their way to a level they most likely would not achieve without massive investment from an external source. They won the lottery and didn’t earn their success. And that’s not even taking into account some of the owners questionable morals.
If City didn’t have the investment from their owners what would they be, mid table at best? Chelsea? Maybe competing with Spurs as London’s second best team? We will never know but it’s understandable why fans of other team look at their success with such contempt.
My concerns is City will go and buy another 100m bench warmer, or pay someone nearly 1m a week every season and the PL will become a foregone conclusion. Maybe it already is.

20th October 2022 at 3:57 pm #200164To make comparisons with anything in football is not faultless and as we know, you can make statistics suit any occasion. The only thing that matters is players on the pitch and the final score. We also know, nothing last forever in football, you enjoy the moment and the next team comes along and the next era starts then fans will find something different to complain about. It would be an education for some of these teams to drop to the third tier with fans so they can start appreciating football again and not be so judgemental on others. I like City’s quality of football, win or loose but I still watched them play lower down the leagues because I liked watching them, admit the quality was non existent but it was a game of football from a team I grew up with. It never crossed my mind that Club x had more money or it was unfair, I know I was not alone in this thought, the reason was,it did not matter, We did not need somebody regulating the game as we do now….for the benefit of who??? Men in suits, 100’s of them in posh offices in Geneva and wherever, why not on a Trading estate in Milton Keynes, I am sure Germany etc have them as well.Football will always have an owner that is financially strong, whoever it is but it will not be forever. OK, the old fogey’s ramble over now

20th October 2022 at 5:51 pm #200167BB, got nothing but cyber love for you, but somehow I do not think for one second that watching my Spuds get relegated to Division II and watch them play Gillingham on a cold Tuesday night is going to change my mind about the “quality” of your owners or the fact that your club is now a political plaything doing its part in a rather pathetic sportswashing campaign, while basically ruining the one thing that English football had over the other European leagues which was competition and the changing of the guard.

20th October 2022 at 6:01 pm #200169So Ten Hag drops Ronaldo from the squad for the Chelsea game. He’s dropped the captain and now Ronaldo. He doesn’t mess about. Player power being torn apart by the manager.

20th October 2022 at 6:46 pm #200170Chuky…the game has changed, you, I or anybody else cannot do anything about it. I was trying to say that as fans are too involved in the politics and not the game. I believe things will change, when, I do not know but they will change. We should just enjoy the game of football not how big the club is, if you cannot divorce yourself from that, then you loose the joy of the game because you are more interested in other aspects. For me, football has always been about football ever since I was a lad and that was a long time ago .That could be a good game. Gillingham v Spurs on a wet winter night think what you may have missed, like 3-0 for Gillingham, with Harry Kane scoring a hat trick for them…he was transferred 5 minutes before kick off!!!

20th October 2022 at 6:50 pm #200171ED…you have needed that kind of management. The concern I would have if I was a Utd fan is IF Utd top management will support him enough over long term. I think he needs 3 years to get Utd to where he wants

20th October 2022 at 7:02 pm #200172It’s not about Ronaldo, it’s about Manchester United. This was one of the main problems. You can’t have a player trying to gain some kind of control in the dressing room.

20th October 2022 at 8:54 pm #200173Nil…Agree with that but it happens. This is not an isolated incident, I believe other clubs have/had it as well. Footballers are paid well to do a job not run a club from within

20th October 2022 at 9:18 pm #200174This is possibly the final straw breaking the camel’s back. Very unfortunate for a Wonderful Guy and Liverpool Legend, but the Club’s best Interests must come first.

20th October 2022 at 9:20 pm #200175Brian, absolutely. It also does not help with the egging on of Agents giving more power to the player. Looks like Ten Hag though is intending on squashing this and sending out a statement.

20th October 2022 at 10:21 pm #200179I felt really sorry for Stevie G tonight he was let down by the players had they put in the same sort of performance as they did on Sunday they would have probably got something from the game.
The Villa fans have turned on Gerrard and it’s a long way back from there. Brentford at home on Sunday which won’t be easy.

20th October 2022 at 10:29 pm #200180I think the Ronaldo omelette is getting a bit over egged he was the world best player he’s still a good player but no longer at that level and currently he’s not getting on the pitch so he’s frustrated that’s all.
He shouldn’t have done what he did and the Club has rightly punished him the solution is finding a route out of the Club for him that will ultimately benefit both parties.
