Exactly babjo. Astounds me how people don’t see it that way.

20th October 2022 at 10:42 am #200138There’s of course no doubt big spending helps, but as we all also know, the right manager has and always will be equally as big a factor on a club’s success, and when Pep leaves City, they just won’t be as dominant as they are now. I think Klopp is particularly irked his own club made a mess of things over the summer, particularly over the midfield, though he exacerbated that himself by stressing that no midfielder was needed, then backtracking at the last minute by saying he was wrong and they did and then panic bought another injury prone midfielder. (They probably needed 2 midfielders). Now he has something of a rebuild/transition at Liverpool whilst City bought Haaland & others and continue to fly high. Think that’s what’s got his goat.

20th October 2022 at 11:04 am #200140Waspy, spoke to Babjo and he agrees with me! Not saying we deserved much, and it was obvious how we had set up to play, but sitting back and trying to restrict a team to pot shots wasn’t perhaps a good idea when the team in question were very obviously setting up to take as many potshots as possible. One of them was bound to go in, even if it needed a deflection to do so. Think Conte should have switched back to 3-4-3 a lot earlier than he did and at 1-0 we always ran the risk of being countered ourselves, which we were. Might have been a different story if some of our half-chances worked out or if Sonny showed up (apart from his cameo against Liecester he really has been very average this season) and we’re certainly missing our Ginja Ninja.
Disappointted but not suicidal. Still 3rd, was the best start to a season (for us!) for 50 odd years, got quite a few tough away games out the way already, plenty of room for improvement and a long way to go… (and always have a trip there as an “L” anyway). Still fancy us for Top 4, that’s all that really counts, innit?

20th October 2022 at 11:30 am #200142The thing is, my LiVARberoOol-loving-lads, most fans would agree with the principle that Kloop is trying to make, and then remember this is the same Kloop who went out and bought Nunez for 85 million… yes, I know you sold a few players etc… but there’s still only very few teams who can go out and splash that sort of wedge on ONE player.

20th October 2022 at 11:30 am #200143Mikus, I believe they’ve all been knock-on effects; from taking the eye off the ball, be it lack of replacements/quality, formation, tactics, contingencies on the back of injuries. It’s caught fire with indifferent results, low confidence, morale, individual players telling each other off. We’ve all been feeling the juggernaut of last season.
Let’s be outright though; how many other teams were still in for 4 comps? We were still in for the quadruple in May. Players and Management are feeling the effects both Mentally and Physically. Trying to sustain one high level season after season and keeping up with Man City and Pep is serious hard work.
I still feel we’ve not reached our optimum and we’re trying to accommodate Nunez and tinker around with formations, but we kept 2 clean sheets in succession and we’re finding our way up.
The reality is though, there are now 4/5 good teams that are serious competition. Top 4 therefore will be difficult.

20th October 2022 at 11:32 am #200144Nil, his antics on the touchline are getting a bit annoying now…. 🙂
Don’t know where the line is between being passionate and supportive of your team (and there’s nothing wrong with that) and going a bit overboard when something “irks” you… like it or not, they’re all role models, and have kids copying them up and down the country.

20th October 2022 at 12:36 pm #200149Just read an article on the negative effects aggressive touchline reactions by Managers can have on Referees officiating Grass roots football.
Klopp’s not the only one who can throw his toys out of the pram though and in fairness he was very regretful of his actions after the game.

20th October 2022 at 12:42 pm #200150“People don’t widen the context; it’s easy to criticize Liverpool, but they’ve been the only team near enough over the last 5 years that’s actually challenged Man City.”
I wasn’t criticising Liverpool at all Nil. Chelsea in the CL Final for the biggest trophy of all.😊
City raised the bar in the PL and Liverpool pushing them as they have kept the PL interesting for everyone.

20th October 2022 at 12:51 pm #200151Mikus, I think you’re right about the Pep effect on City similarly the Klopp effect on Liverpool.
Seems to me Liverpool ran out of legs this season a combination of over commitment, age and vulnerability to injuries certainly in midfield and as good as he is in forward mode TAA is still vulnerable defensively.
Still don’t think Liverpool are far off especially once they get some of their injured players back and when they strengthen their midfield in the Summer.

20th October 2022 at 1:13 pm #200152Yes that’s fair Nine, as I say, I just think Klopp is frustrated that its going to be a transition season because of the lack of reinforcements in midfield. And he looks over at City who did sort out the recruitment they needed and continue to fly. Don’t think the club is quite out the woods yet. Yes the last few games have been more positive but the home crowd has been a big lift and the team looks like it’s still struggling to get out of 2nd gear. West Ham weren’t particularly great last night but they should have scored and so could have easily drawn.

20th October 2022 at 1:26 pm #200153I get where people are coming from but I really don’t see why it’s only city that get hit with the stick …. Because they win and dominate for a few years?
Like the original doping fiends Chelsea?
But they are no longer winning everything so it’s ok..
Or msn u dominance for a decade because they could outspend everyone and I mean everyone!!
Or maybe Liverpool who dominates the 80s for another decade?
The issue is always who is winning
I see no difference myself snd once pro goes will fade like Chelsea snd will win but not dominate … after city it could actually be the end of the periods of one teams domination….

20th October 2022 at 2:01 pm #200154Stevo. Chelsea were gifted a rich owner who wanted to build a successful Club most football fans would have been as grateful as Chelsea fans were for that.
Chelsea were never ever charged with breaking either PL or UEFA financial play rules and all Chelsea’s spending were within the rules of the day!

20th October 2022 at 2:12 pm #200156Utd were very often outspent by other teams during our peak years Steve. 3 times during all Ferguson’s PL years were Utd the PL’s biggest spenders. He spent big and broke records but was outspent by a few teams in total. Arsenal were the biggest spenders in the league this last season so people will probably start having a go at you lot if you win something 😁. Utd’s ridiculous spending coincided with our declining success on the pitch, which backs up Mikus’ point about how important the manager is, though money is certainly another big factor.
