Big win for Barca last night especially after losing the El Classico.

29th October 2020 at 11:56 am #169303Yeah that’s a fair point Nine, if that’s what the rules of the award say. They should really change the name of it then as the name suggests it’s about more than simply achievements in the sport of choice. I’m not really a follower of F1 so I don’t know how good Hamilton has been, in all honesty.

29th October 2020 at 12:30 pm #169304Hamilton is a fabulous driver in F1 as it stands now. Would love to see how good he would be if they were allowed to race flat out all the time, rather than how it is now with fuel and tire limits.
Schumacherβs record looked untouchable when it was set, but Hamilton has beaten it and may yet absolutely smash it.
Heβs not everyoneβs cup of tea, but talent wise heβs up there to be compared with others from generations past….Pagan

29th October 2020 at 1:09 pm #169305AnonymousEd in GP it’s not really the driver that make such a difference but the car that gives the best performance and Mercedes are miles ahead of Ferrari and the rest for a few years now. I drive a Mercedes myself had it for 7 years now and it’s given me no trouble at all only the normal stuff that has to be renewed like tyres, brakes and services and believe me it’s done a lot of mileage. You can’t go wrong with Mercedes.

29th October 2020 at 1:54 pm #169307Ed, they could change the sporting achievement criteria , they could create another award to fit the incredible work Rashford has done or there is the Helen Rollason Award which might be considered suitable.
However I do believe what Hamilton has achieved needs to be recognised as a great Sporting achievement in him breaking a wins record by Michael Schumacher which nobody really thought could be beaten.
I do believe though that Marcus Rashford should be recognised by Sport somehow for using his role as an iconic Sportsman to try and feed needy school children.

29th October 2020 at 3:32 pm #169309Whilst the car is a big factor in F1, the driver plays a huge part, theyβre involved in the development and in the race setup. During the race nowadays itβs all about speed v tyre wear, in past generations where you ran flat out all the time it was speed v reliability, in both cases a lot of it is down to smoothness of the driver. Then of course you have the real leveller, rain, the great drivers excel in it…..Pagan

29th October 2020 at 9:03 pm #169313I think SPOTY should only run every two years. It would make it more coveted whilst also providing a wider range of contenders.

29th October 2020 at 10:14 pm #169314I am not a Hamilton fan but he does deserve to win this. There maybe better drivers but without a competitive car they will get nowhere near. However, on a more level standing, Hamilton is a born “racer” and that is always going to be his advantage. I hope he does get past 100 wins but he will need a car to do it and his contract has not been signed yet. Mercedes have a few choices but I believe they will stay with Hamilton

29th October 2020 at 10:54 pm #169315Sports Personality is outdated to me. It used to be a fun watch and something a little more meaningful. For a fair few roll outs in recent years, it’s pretty much predictable.
Footballers in the Premier League for the way they’re portrayed earn themselves a reputation.
Hamilton’s achievement is something really special as I recently listened on the Radio and I’m no F1 fan and have zero knowledge of the Sport.
I believe Marcus Rashford will be Recognized in the Queens New Year Honours and could possible receive an MBE for his influence and deservedly so.

30th October 2020 at 10:35 am #169320Nike..like most things now, it is Political choice……where is the old full back playing his 500th game for a club in the 3rd tier and doing good work as well, like many others…overlooked there must be thousands of cases more worthy without having multi millions backing to get them there. I vote for the ordinary people, the so called starts have there rewards already. Another waste of money by the BBC

30th October 2020 at 10:56 am #169322SPOTY is viewer choice nothing political, if you don’t like it don’t watch it. I disagree that it’s a waste of money by the BBC, if it was not many would watch and the BBC would cancel it. Instead many families look forward to it every year. I also don’t get you Brian regarding the backed by millions, many celebrated sports people make about as much money as the average Joe, sometimes maintaining a job as well as the incredible dedication to training.
Rashford has done incredible things off the pitch this year and he is rightfully getting the acknowledgment he deserves but I don’t think his sporting achievements should merit him coming anywhere near the award. I don’t think footballers should be awarded anyway as they are just a part of a team effort.
This year should of been an Olympic year and would of produced many top candidates but sadly wasn’t the case. With that in mind I can only think of Hamilton as someone that has achieved great success.

30th October 2020 at 10:57 am #169323Brian, I concur with everything you say. I feel in despair from what I’ve previously experience to what’s become which is effectively lip-service churned out and people buying into it.
It’s selective in who they praise as to what will draw in the most level of interest not purely judged on merit.
Unfortunately, there aren’t footballers or very little footballers in the modern game who will drop down divisions just to play football. The last most recent football was Joe Cole – decent professional.
I try not to draw myself too deep in those accolades made up by the media and the BBC. The high level of hype projected towards certain individuals no longer relate to the common individual on the street.

30th October 2020 at 11:08 am #169324Thatβs what I mean about jose. Slating everyone after last night. Speaking to the media instead of the players. Terrible man management and you donβt see any other manager doing it

30th October 2020 at 11:16 am #169326Sean, you’re spot on as an astute tactician as Jose is these kind of public outbursts are always just around the corner with him.

30th October 2020 at 11:22 am #169327Re SPOTY I get where Brian is coming from and there are various awards on the night that should cover what he has raised in addition to the main award, which is decided by a public vote after the ceremony gets under way, there are a host of the other awards presented on the night.
These are the World Sport Star of the Year, Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Helen Rollason Award, Get Inspired Unsung Hero Award and Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Completely agree Nil – alas in the explosion of digital & social media over recent years, sports, like politics, has become an idolatry.
