“it made him feel 10 foot tall and was a massive boost to his confidence”
Jose is one of , if not the best in the game when it comes to this kind of thing. I’d say Klopp is up there too. I think Jose has got to find his love for the sport again though and maybe Spurs is where he can do this.
I will add that I find myself strongly disliking him when I find him to be just toxic… and then he might say something while on the panel of a neutral match and you can see the incredible charisma and also knowledge. There have been times where he just blows all other pundits out of the water. he’s playing 4D chess in comparison… He’s easy to like in these situations and so easy to dislike when he starts taking swipes at other managers, referees etc.
LD, do I hope he fails at Spurs? I should, I really should but as things stand now, no. Ask me after he’s been in the job a few months though and I bet the answer changes 😛

24th November 2019 at 10:08 am #53912There is no denying that Jose’s career has been so exceptional that Poch could never compare.
Mak, forget Jose’s entire career, Just look at Porto or Inter individually and explain why what Poch has achieved with spurs comes even close to either one.
These stats are very handy when it comes to backing up an opinion but let’s remember that the PL has (in my opinion and I think most?) become more competitive and much more difficult to win. What is Klopp’s record like in those amount of games? I’d bet they are nothing incredible, yet here we are, considered to be one of the best, if not the best around at the moment anyway. My point is that those stats do not necessarily say what you think they do.
Mak, I didnt highlight those stats because they backed up my own pre-determined narrative or opinion (although it seems you dismissed them out of hand because they didnt fit yours) But to the contrary these objective statistics inform my opinion.
Now I did as you asked re Klopp and it backs up my argument perfectly, here it is
Pool with Klopp in Prem league : P157-W98-D39-L20-POINTS-333
Pool for the 157 before Klopp : P157-W75-D39-L43-POINTS-264Now that is real impact impact and the sign that a manager has taken a club up a level or two. Klopp achieved 69 points more over only 157 games, Poch achieved only 17 more over 202 games.
To put it in another perspective, Pool averaged 1.68 points per game for the 157 games before Klopp arrived and 2.12 per game since he has arrived, Where as for Spurs, they averaged 1.81 points per game for the 202 games prior to Poch and 1.89 per game with him. You see the point here? I am not just picking stats to prove my opinion, I am basing my opinion on the objective stats. If Poch actually achieved more I would genuinely give him more credit.
P.s, before you dismiss this out of hand and talk about the VVD or Alisson fees, please consider that Poch didnt need to spend on a keeper as he inherited LLoris, and didnt need to get a top class centre back as he had Alde and Jan, and also remember how poor pools squad was for a lot of the first half of the 157 games compared to what Poch had at spurs.

24th November 2019 at 12:58 pm #53927Lucky, Poch also inherited one of Europe’s best strikers in Harry Kane.

24th November 2019 at 1:36 pm #53934Some Managers are more measured than others. I don’t know whether that questions or impacts on how driven they are, but expectations and stakes is taken into account.
It’s more of your Eddie Howes and Sean Dyche’s that will be like “oh well better luck next time” than your Jose’s and Pep’s of this game.
It’s a fair point though on Jekyl and Hyde. I once seen a game on Tv played at Sunderland when United were I’m sure 2-0 up and never had I seen such a miserable facial expression than the one Jose wore that afternoon.
Bad vibes filters through the dressing room.

24th November 2019 at 9:16 pm #54112AnonymousI don’t know if I’d say Howe and others think “better luck next time”, in the classic sense, so much as their realistic target does not depend on them only losing a handful of matches. If Howe for instance got the Spurs job, his dislike of losing any average PL match would likely change as it has a much larger impact on his new targets than previously.
For me though, I’m not talking about winning or losing a game with Jose. There is something brilliant that is also terrible in him. Football brings out maybe the best and maybe the worst in him, we can only guess but there are definitely 2 bold sides to this man, in my opinion.

27th November 2019 at 12:48 am #54458Well, if you use Statistic-D’s scientifically proven formula, Maureen’s average point ratio average point ratio is 3 points per game, and if you measure that against the same period before he took over, which I believe averaged 0,5 points per game you will note an increase of 2,5 points per game (to put that in perspective, Kloop has an average of 0.44 points per game!)… it only shows the genius that is Maureen as this would also include Maureen’s “team-building” phase!! In fact, such is the genius of Maureen, I fully expect him to average more than 3 points per game over the course of his career at the Spuds!! 🙂

27th November 2019 at 5:00 am #54459Whereas using Chucky’s proposed modified version where we take away every manager’s bad games, Spurs haven’t lost a game under any manager. Ever. ?

27th November 2019 at 5:32 am #54460Was that the one where I proposed a simple head-to-head between the two based on the three seasons they both played identical opposition or the one where I thought comparing the beginning, middle and end one of a career with only the beginning and middle of another was a little skewed?
Anyway, why you having a “pop” at me? It’s Statistic-D’s system, I’m just implementing it… 🙂

27th November 2019 at 5:46 am #54461I’m having a pop because, whilst Lucky’s system had its minor flaws, yours was just bizarre. Removing Poch’s last 20 or so games because they were the ones that caused him to be sacked and removing his first season, well just because he had Kaboul and Capoue ?.

27th November 2019 at 5:55 am #54463No, naughty boy, I didn’t remove the last 20 because they were shite, the point I was making (or trying to, anyway! 🙂 ) was Kloop hasn’t played his “endgame”, ergo hasn’t finished his career at Liberoools, therefore comparing a “completed” career vs a “non-completed” career is unfair to both managers… and it was Statistic-D who tried to not include the “beginning of Kloops” career in my head to head as it wasn’t fair, I pointed out he’s included the beginning of Poncho’s career which included those two…
Or I think I did, can’t be asked to read back… 🙂
Still say any argument is flawed unless you have to identical sets of data to process…
