Paul, certainly there was players to the value of circa £200k plus on the bench.
The Club appointed Potter with a long term plan in mind and they are cutting him some slack because of the injury crisis yesterday with Zakira coming off that made a full team injured.
Personally I don’t think things will start to improve until Chelsea get the key players up and running again which will take time and too many Chelsea fans who have only known success lack patience.
The team below when they are all back and in the groove is good enough to see Chelsea finish closer to the top than the bottom
Mendy
*
James
Fofana
Silva
Chilwell
*
Kante
Kovacic
*
Mount
Felix
Sterling
*
HavertzWhen everyone is back and in the groove Chelsea have every chance of finishing closer to the top than the bottom but 6 of those players are still injured and Felix is banned for 3 games which makes things very difficult for Potter and Chelsea still lack a striker of any merit.
This is a long term job whoever the Manager is and it will take time for the injuries to clear and the squad to evolve over several windows to get Chelsea back to where they want to be.

13th January 2023 at 2:56 pm #202782I saw something a couple of days ago that Chelsea have spent over £400mil since the summer if you include the players who have already signed for the summer (Nkunku). Boehly seems to have become Chelsea’s Ed Woodward just throwing money everywhere and hoping something sticks.
Feel a bit for Potter who is clearly a talented coach. The fans need to get behind him and stop this nonsense of singing Tuchel and Roman songs which helps nobody. I know the Chelsea fans on here are behind him but the match going fans seem to find this long term strategy to be a strain on their patience.

13th January 2023 at 4:31 pm #202783Ed, that’s what is so worrying, the front loaded investment like this as its not limitless and even if it were we have to comply with FFP still.
Yes it’s being spread over very long contracts but it will catch up sooner rather than later and we will get to the situation in which if the players we are spending so much on now prove to be not good enough we will not have capacity to replace them.
