3rd December 2019 at 4:39 pm #55347There you go Mak. 22 games in 30 games. Not sure why we’re narrowing it down to English soil. The argument is surely about the quality of the English sides rather than being about it being harder to score in England per se. As I said, imagine how that would look if he played the likes of Newcastle, Norwich and Man utd ?

3rd December 2019 at 4:42 pm #55348Come off It Mak, throwing stones? I do find that argument lazy, nothing personal aimed at you. It’s a well used argument so it can hardly be directed at you personally. Someone else said it is lazy to use Messi’s stats to back up his claim. No skin off my nose!

3rd December 2019 at 4:49 pm #55349But is Messi better than Lampard? Or Wellard? Or Scholes? Or is Wellard better than Scholes? Or is it a Wellard/Scholes Messi Sandwich? And if so, what happened to Lampard? Is he the Picalilli Mustard on Messi’s meat and potatoes sandwich? Who knows? Who cares? Can dogs lookup? Why did Tony Hibbert never win one? π
Can we just agree beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the nose from Sweddy Eddy’s face??

3rd December 2019 at 4:56 pm #55350I said it was lazy, but not just about Messi, but to quote goals as a measure of greatness is lazy. Does it mean Clive Allen is an all time great? What about Kevin Phillips? I said you should measure a players influence on their teams success to determine if they have had a great season or not but all you Messi lovers keep quoting 51 goals 50 games crap. It lacks substance to the debate.
I’ve not seen a lot of Messi this year but I did see was him sulk with his head dropped, with no desire to do anything other feel sorry for himself when if he put some effort in he may of helped get a goal that would of qualified his team to the biggest final in club football. But no, he acted like a petulant child, that did not show me a player that was the greatest this year in football. Then you see VvD and how he has helped influence and transform this Liverpool team it’s totally different.
Mikus may of overstated VvD by saying he is the greatest defender in decades but this year he has produced the best defensive displays over the year that I can recall. Terry, Campbell, Rio, Kompany, all great players, but none have influenced their team to success like VvD has done this year.

3rd December 2019 at 5:06 pm #55351Threeps, name me a player that’s ever scored as many as 51 goals (& 19 assists) in a season in a top league that hasn’t deserved to be talked about as a Ballon D’Or contender. In the modern game of course.
Of course goals alone aren’t a measure of success and stats can be misleading. But not using stats at all is even more misleading. Liverpool fans have banged on all season about how many games since anyone dribbled past VVD. Guess what that is? A stat.

3rd December 2019 at 5:13 pm #55354threeps, as I said previously “Virgil Van Dyke has done more than anyone imo to turn Liverpool from top 4 challengers to CL winners and PL title contenders and heβs undoubtedly currently the worldβs best Centre Back”.
“Terry, Campbell, Rio, Kompany, all great players, but none have influenced their team to success like VvD has done this year.”
threeps in respect of John Terry I watched him live and up close from a lad and to say he didn’t influence his team to success in the way Van Dijk has done this year is plain wrong as Terry massively influenced his team over multiple years.

3rd December 2019 at 5:24 pm #55356That’s just your opinion Mav but it’s not the opinion of the Journalist, Coaches and Captains who all voted based on the defined criteria.

3rd December 2019 at 5:37 pm #55359The point Iβve sought to make in all this is that whilst Messi continues to perform at an incredible level and keeps racking up the goals and assists, he and Ronaldo have been recognised continually, year after year for the past decade or so. This year a defender performed at the highest level he could, showing incredible leadership along with it, as well as some incredible stats. Even the other day he banged both our goals in. What more can the guy do?? The authorities had the opportunity to officially recognise such incredible defensive and leadership qualities. But it didnβt. It went with Messi…again, probably because heβs more well known and Van Dijk has only just recently established himself. These things take time.
But it all just felt a bit like an establishment rewarding one of their own again.
On the flip side, had Van Dijk won, it could have put him too much on a perch and so more in focus and so more pressure. So I can very much live without him winning.

3rd December 2019 at 6:58 pm #55365That must be it Mav all the Journalists, Coaches and International Captains must have been biased.Lol. ?
This is just going around in circles now. I get the Liverpool lads wanted their boy to win it but it’s all done and dusted now and nothing anyone says is going to change the outcome.
It’s a b****y beauty contest anyway!

Van Dijk: 69
Messi: 61
Ronaldo: 17Should have been first past the post voting system π

3rd December 2019 at 10:20 pm #55384Anonymous“Just to keep things accurate”
What about what I said was not accurate? If someone is going call me a silly tit then I’m sure they can back their own words up.
nothing that Ive said is inaccurate, unless you want to actually correct me instead of stating other information. ‘
The underlying question was : “how would Messi do in the PL” and the facts state that he actually doesn’t do well against PL sides in England. What really winds my gears though is, I’ve never seen such a passenger in my life.
he comes to Anfield thinking 3-0 is over, and just watch his utter lack of fight/character, call it all what you life. If this is the best in the world then no offense, none of you have the slightest clue what you’re talking about.

3rd December 2019 at 10:22 pm #55385AnonymousMikus, Van Dijk made more first choice picks cause of all the “Mane should really get it” diversionary shit.
Mane is fantastic. I’d not trade him for anyone but Van Dijk is the best player in the world.

3rd December 2019 at 10:24 pm #55386AnonymousThe annoying thing about it is that if the media bothered to show why, most people would agree.
I guess we’ll have to win both the PL and CL this season before you lads realise it. Challenge accepted.
