The only awards I take notice of Nil are those where Utd players are in contention. With that in mind, I’m very much taking a prolonged break from awards for a few years ?

3rd December 2019 at 2:17 pm #55308Ed, yes itβs true Ronaldo was obviously still improving but if you look at his immediate stats before and after joining Madrid I think you can still make a reasonable comparison. He was a big big player in both those teams.
As for the CL games with Messi scoring against English teams, we are talking about a cup here which is a different mentality to a league game and generally both teams have to go for it more so the games I think will be that bit more open.
I admit trying to make a fair comparison in these things is difficult, Iβm sure weβll generally agree with that. But Iβd argue the Ronaldo comparison is probably the best weβre going to get and we do see an improvement and a very quick one at that.

3rd December 2019 at 2:23 pm #55313not a fair comparison at all when you talk about one of the BEST PLAYERS EVER to grace the game, at every level including international….talk about apples and oranges!

3rd December 2019 at 2:30 pm #55316Steveo, Ronaldo arguably had it more difficult in his early days at Madrid where the team was not yet built for him and he had to establish himself amongst all the other egos, yet he improved his scoring stats immediately.

3rd December 2019 at 2:34 pm #55318“That’s how people see it absolutely no problem I see it slightly different…I said phew Lionel Messi I’ve probably said five hundred thousand times in my life already yeah is probably the best player I saw in my lifetime that’s how it is” But last season I can not remember a more impressive season for a defender ever honestly but it would have been right as well if Virg had won it.” Jurgen Klopp

3rd December 2019 at 2:38 pm #55319Nine, just to be clear, Iβm not bitter about it. Messi is obviously still a phenomenal player. But I just think in such situations people tend to conform with conventional wisdom and donβt always look at the bigger picture.

3rd December 2019 at 3:02 pm #55325Anonymous“The βMessi couldnβt do that in the PLβ argument is the laziest of lazy arguments. I posted earlier on this thread and here it is again. He has 24 goals in 30 games against the absolute best sides our league has to offer.”
Really? From what I can see so far (up to 2016 so far) Messi has never scored against Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, ever, on English soil. Not ever. Not one time!
I see 3 goals. 2 against Arsenal and 1 against City in 2014. Now, maybe his record drastically increased after 2016 ? Now, that seems to very strongly back up my lazy opinion that he’d struggle in England… well because even with his own personal entourage of a team, he actually has been all these years.

3rd December 2019 at 3:04 pm #55326AnonymousI tell a lie, Messi scored against Utd on neutral ground in Wembly. So 4 goals in 11 games.
not exactly the stellar image you painted.

3rd December 2019 at 3:08 pm #55327Did you read what Klopp said Mak. It’s a beauty contest based on the criteria and the voting system Messi was judged to be better looking than Van Dijk by all the Coaches players and journalists who voted. Time to move on.

3rd December 2019 at 3:13 pm #55330Mak, as I said in my previous post Virgil Van Dyke has done more than anyone imo to turn Liverpool from top 4 challengers to CL winners and PL title contenders and heβs undoubtedly currently the worldβs best Centre Back and he would have made a worthy winner of the Balon DβOr because of that imo.

3rd December 2019 at 3:15 pm #55331Ed @ 1:41, yeah me too. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, there was certain players I took more notice of than others like Zico, Maradona, Romario, et al, but also, credit where credits due too to the Cantona’s and the Giggsys.
Messi probably will be a one off for everything that he’s achieved and given to the game.
Cheers

He won’t be a one off but ya, he’s a truly SPECIAL player, maybe the best ever attacker, of all time. That shouldn’t qualify you for an annual award though, which in my opinion has been the case here. We could agree to disagree, or we could start throwing stones. either way I’ve had enough of this now.
