I understand the attacking mentality Nine, but Van Dijk, defender or not, is a superstar now. Heβs that good. And heβs really worked for it on his footballing journey to the top. Be nice for it to be recognised.

2nd December 2019 at 7:34 pm #55195Boring if so Sean – heβs been recognised enough I think now. Van Dijk not only the best defender in the world at the moment, but one of the best thereβs been for a long time. He would walk into any side.

2nd December 2019 at 8:59 pm #55209Just crazy Hightown that Mahrez is in the top 10. Sterling been miles better than Mahrez.
Well deserved that from another fantastic year for Messi. Not saying VVD wouldn’t have deserved it too, mind.

2nd December 2019 at 9:07 pm #55212Donβt agree with the voting system. There should just be a small panel of older former and distinguished footballers who can give a better judgement overall. The current system is too big and just allows people to vote for their mates or favourites or they just succumb to following conventional/fashionable opinion being like sheep and following the crowd.

2nd December 2019 at 11:47 pm #55220Best player in the World?
Lionel Messi 1 – Lionel Messi was involved in 63 goals in 2019 for @FCBarcelona and @Argentina (46 goals and 17 assists), averaging 1’17 per game (GP54). Gold. #BallonDor #BallonDor2019
Incredible to still be playing at the level he does season in and season out so congratulations to him.
Although not winning it I’m pleased Virgil Van Dyke has got the recognition he deserved he has been and is the best Centre Back in the World by a mile and one of the main reasons why Liverpool are where they are currently.
“Van Dijk doesn’t look too disappointed and he explains why: βI had a great season, but sometimes you come up against players like him [Messi], who are a bit unnatural. Six Ballon dβOrs, you gotta respect greatness. I was close, but I lost out to someone better.β
Top response too!

Or we could just let LIberoool fans vote and save all the heartache for everybody else? π π

Serious question, was Mahrez in the top 10 City players last season?
As for Van Dijk not getting it, this might read as bitter, I don’t feel bitter. I am on a high this and last and the season before last, with Liverpool. In my opinion, regardless of Messi’s epic goal scoring, I think Van Dijk has been the best CB we’ve seen in maybe decades. Was Canavaro better than him? I’m trying to remember of course but I think not even him. Van Dijk is a victim of his own effortlessness, which is what he makes it seem. He doesn’t ever get dribbled past because he reads every attacking player (including Messi btw, check the matches and see). He doesn’t ever get yellow carded because he never loses focus, or is caught out to the point where he has to take one for the team. I don’t think his aerial battles are the best in the game but it’s still a very very strong point of his game. He’s a player with no weaknesses. That’s right, he can also play with the ball at his feet, we haven’t had a better passing CB in a long long time. He can even take direct free kicks FFS, or score from indirect set pieces.
messi didn’t do a thing against him last season, so when Virgil talked about “sometimes you come up against a player like him, I know he was being magnanimous but what that made me think of was how completely out of the game Messi was against in at Anfield.”. Even in the 3-0 loss, did he make a show of Van Dijk? Nope.
Van Dijk was the best player in the world last season and anyone who tells me different, feel free to back your opinion up with more than stats about how he shot fish in a barrel in La Liga.
“amazing he can still do it”
Although true, I don’t like this being a factor. We’re talking about who was best, not who is still playing to a very high level even though we should be seeing them slow down a bit. There are no extra points for this.
Ultimately though, it’s a marketing and popularity contest.

3rd December 2019 at 7:10 am #55230The thing I’m against Messi winning it is although the scored 51 goals he isn’t the player he was. He doesn’t have the role anymore because he cannot do it, age has caught up on him. He is simply a wonderfully talented goal scorer in a team engineering to maximise those talents. He does not track back, he does not help out when the going gets tough, he stands with his hands on his hips looking like a spoilt child who’s been told he cannot play anymore, looking in disgust at his teammates. He is supposedly the captain but shows zero captain attributes.
Sadly I think goals and fancy skills still rule peoples opinions. I would had loved it if VvD won, I would love it if a hard tackling midfielder wins in the future, or a fullback, whatever, someone who has massively influenced their teams season. When Barca needed Messi to influence theirs at their most crucial time, he sulked, his head dropped and he failed.

AKA 90 minutes at Anfield.
Best player in the world my arse. It was nice of us to get 3 out of the top 5 but I’m sorry lads, if this whole Christiano V Messi thing hadn’t been going on, it would be Van Dijk who took it and yoiu all should know that in my opinion. Maybe even now you lads don’t agree. if so, I’d love to hear it cause I am after all biased… I have however seen Van Dijk effortlessly contain everyone he’s face, except Pepe that one time he got past him. THATS IT. No other player has gotten past him in about 2 years besides that one moment.

3rd December 2019 at 7:35 am #55233AnonymousI never knew that Robertsons head push on Messi was a retaliation until I saw the first bit too. Hendo saw it and gives messi a “you got something to say” bump. love it.
