Mane was the best player for the team that won the CL,beating Barca & Messi on their way to lifting the trophy. But it seems that it was between Messi & VVD,anyway.
Personally,I would have given it to Phil Jones, myself. What a cracking player!_____________________________

27th November 2019 at 11:27 am #54500Any of VVD, Phil Jones, Messi or Mane would be deserving winners and have cases to put forward for why they should win it

27th November 2019 at 11:31 am #54503If it’s between Mane and Messi, then it would have to be Messi, much better stats (pretty much double everything Mane did). With a vaguely serious hat on, this isn’t really a debate.

27th November 2019 at 2:50 pm #54543Personally I wasn’t arguing for Mane. I’m firmly in the VVD camp. But comparing Mane’s stats with Messi’s is misleading. You just don’t have the ‘gimme’ games in the Premiership that you get in La Liga. If Messi had been playing in the Prem last season, I’ll bet his stats wouldn’t have been much better than Mane’s, certainly nowhere near his La Liga stats.

27th November 2019 at 3:15 pm #54546Unfortunately, Double H, that’s one of those “We’ll never know!” things…
I guess we’ll find out when Mane moves to Madrid or something… π

27th November 2019 at 3:32 pm #54548It’s an often-used comeback re the difference in strength of the leagues but surely with all the players going backwards and forwards between the two leagues, we’d have seen some evidence of this? Have we had any so-so players who have gone to Spain and suddenly scored shed loads of goals?
– Suarez? Is his record any better in Spain than his last season at Liverpool?
– Alexis Sanchez scored tons more goals at Arsenal than he ever did at Barca…
– Owen was ok in Madrid, same with Bale. Hardly took their goalscoring exploits on to another level. Going back a bit with Owen I know but struggling for examples.
– If Messi is at an advantage by playing in La Liga, why is he so damn good in the CL too and, let me remind you, the top scorer last season in it, nonetheless.Lastly, if Messi would struggle in the PL (relatively speaking), how can he have such a good record against English sides in the PL. Bear in mind, these are the absolute best sides we have to offer up in our league and he has 22 goals in 30 games against English sides. Imagine how much better that ratio would be when Newcastle would be turning up, or Villa?

27th November 2019 at 4:53 pm #54551Also Messi was top scorer in the CL.
Rightly or wrongly defenders rarely win the Balon D’Or voting usually goes to players that get you out of your seat.

1st December 2019 at 9:13 pm #55104“A leaked version of the Ballon dβOr results has surfaced on social media ahead of Mondayβs ceremony. A tweet shows a picture of the supposed top ten, though it is by no means guaranteed that this is the result. Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk are expected to be the top two.
And the leaked result suggests Messi gets his hands on his sixth Ballon dβOr crown, pipping the Liverpool player.
The results show Messi on 446 points with Van Dijk on 382. The Dutchmanβs Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah is third.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won five Ballon dβOr titles, is fourth in the list with another Liverpool duo in Sadio Mane and Alisson in fifth and sixth respectively.
Kylian Mbappe slots into seventh with Frenkie De Jong eighth. De Jongβs former Ajax team-mate Matthijs De Ligt is supposedly ninth and Hazard 10th” Express 1/12 ?????????

2nd December 2019 at 6:35 am #55113I would never argue who had the best season by using stats, it can be very misleading. What I use is how has the player influenced their teams season in a positive way towards their goals either winning something, qualifying or staying up. Messi scored lots of goals, big deal, but Barca’s season was still not a great one. Clive Allen back in the 80s scored a stupid amount of goals one season, yet he wasn’t the best player that season.
For me the debate between Messi, VvD and Mane over who has had the most influence there can only be one winner and that is big Virgil.
Personally I don’t care so much if the leak is correct and Messi wins it will just go to show in my eyes how stupid and possibly corrupt the whole awards process is. I’m just glad VvD is playing in my team to the standard he is.

2nd December 2019 at 6:52 am #55114So, 3p’s, just checking here, so if Big V wins it then everything is okay, but if Messi wins it, it’s all corrupt and rubbish?? π

2nd December 2019 at 7:30 am #55115In my opinion is that VvD should win, but I suspect it will be the usual Messi love-in that seems to always happen and to me that is undeserved, he did not influence his team to an overly successful season.
Messi has been the best player for the last 10 years and has deserved to win all those times before (same with Ronaldo) but I would find the awards process pretty rubbish if they cannot see past the fact another player has had a greater season than him.

2nd December 2019 at 7:52 am #55116But that’s the thing, 3p’s, did Messi have that bad a season? 50 odd goals, CL semi-final, La Liga title (maybe even the Spanish Cup, don’t remember)…

2nd December 2019 at 7:52 am #55117I don’t think anyone could disagree that VVD had a great season and was a major influence on Liverpool’s title challenge and winning the CL.
But this award is about who was the best player in the opinion of the Journalists,Captains and Coaches across Europe I don’t think anyone can call it corrupt. It’s an individual award judged on who has been the best player.
If Messi wins it’s because he’s still an amazing player who does amazing things on the football pitch and arguably if not the best we’ve ever seen certainly one of the best we’ve ever seen who despite his team falling at the Semi Finals stage of the CL again still had a wonderful season who helped his team win another League title.
As fantastic as VVD was for Liverpool last season and continues to be rightly or wrongly defenders don’t move people the way attacking players do and the list of previous winners confirms that. If the final outcome of the Balon D’Or is as per the leak that’s probably the reason more than anything else.
