Well if that’s true, I’m surprised. As Klopp said when asked about it, if the award is for the best player over the last 10 years, then it goes to Messi, but if it’s an award for last season, it should be Virgil.

Fantastic though Messi is, last season wasn’t his best. It was VVD’s best resulting in a win of the Champions League that in the summer of 2018 appeared very unlikely. I don’t know what Liverpool’s odds were in August of 2018 to win the CL, but they would have been considerably higher than Barca’s to win La Liga.

As usual the award is a stitch up/love-in as it has been for years between Ronaldo and Messi. Don’t get me wrong, they are both obviously two of the GOATs, but there has been the odd year when I’ve felt other players could and should have had a look in

Apparently van dijk was the bookies favourite, until the leak, with betting now rither suspended or HEAVILY suggestive of a Messi win.

I don’t think its just a silly rumour Nine but if you are feeling brave, you can x 5 your cash by betting on Van Dijk man 😉

On a serious note though, if this is true, I wont be paying any attenion to this award from here on. This is , at least in my mind just not right.

As much as it wasn’t his best season, anyone else does this and they walk the award. Is it fair to expect Messi to be compared to his younger self in determining how good a season he’s had? I’m not so sure

Mak, I didn’t say it was a “silly” rumour mate only I said it was just a rumour out of Spain but as per the Ed’s post above that’s a pretty impressive season from Messi if he does win it.

Maybe the Spanish newspaper has got it right we’ll know for sure shortly but as I said whoever wins it they are all great players.

I certainly wouldn’t be putting my money on any of them, it’s an award that I only have a very limited interest in as I said it’s a beauty contest and beauty is always in the eye of the beholder if we all had a vote that counted on here there would be a variety of different opinions.

Messi is not there on name alone. As I said, any other player gets the stats he did last season, they’d absolutely walk it. We don’t compare other players to Messi from 5 years ago so why should we with Messi?

Yeah just to clarify, I’m not saying Messi is more deserving than Mane based on stats alone. I’m merely trying to point out that Messi had a much better season than he’s given credit for and that he should be compared to his peers, not his own ridiculously high standards set previously.

I mean we don’t deny Usain Bolt the Gold in the 100m because he is unable to beat his own record from London 2012 do we? It’s about who is the fastest runner on the day.

Mane is very consistent these days but not at the level of Messi. Not even close at the minute.
