14th October 2018 at 9:26 am #27147The reports of the conference make no reference to Khaldoon saying this. He is quoted as saying the one player they would like to sign was Messi. The rest is made up. And has been verified as made up. Check out Same Lee from Goal. The full video is available for those who want to check. Fake news CM. Never mind you enjoyed it for a while didn’t you.

14th October 2018 at 9:58 am #27150Of course I did Jim, just like you enjoy any figure that is thrown out in regards to Sanchez’s wages, no matter how fabricated they are. I went by the quotes written in the article. Made up or not, who knows.

14th October 2018 at 10:51 am #27155Spanish media re reporting it too! City offered Kaka crazy money too,a few years back if I can remember correctly. But why shouldnt they? If that bitch Neymar is worth £220m and wages of close to a £1m p/w,why shouldnt Messi be offered 3x that,if you have the £££???

14th October 2018 at 11:10 am #27158A good yarn!
If it was true, but clearly it isnt, we might have had to pay him as much as Sanchez or even a bit more!
Really another example of twisting words something like this:
Interviewer..Who would you like to sign
Responder… with a chuckle..Messi
Interviewer…That would cost you a lot, youd have to treble his salary..
Responder..with a laugh…It probably wouldHEADLINE
CITY CHAIRMAN WANTS TO SIGN MESSI. IT WOULD TREBLE HIS SALARY
Im sjre you are all smart enough to know how this nonsense works_____________________________

14th October 2018 at 2:04 pm #27167According to Sam Lee
Khaldoon Al Mubarak did say that Messi is a player that City tried to sign but couldn’t
Nothing to do with who he wants to sign rather than who he tried to sign. Like I said I am just going by what AS Sport mentioned and it was a direct quote from Khaldoon Al Mubarak.
Isn’t Messi on about 660k a week.
If it isn’t true, then it is fairly easy for papers to guess what players earn or make things up.

14th October 2018 at 3:42 pm #27173“We will make our way without him, which will be more difficult because he is the best player in the history of football.
He changed everything, he is a genius.” Ferran Soriano
The above suggests that City were interested in signing Messi and who wouldn’t have been. To do so they would have had to make a world breaking offer and pay him silly money.
It didn’t happen though and won’t happen now.

Sam Lee, the source Jim used said that Khaldoon Al Mubarak was asked which player have you tried so hard to sign but did not get and Al Mubarak replied Messi. Whether the triple the wages part if true, I dont know. I have not seen the clip and it is in Arabic. AS used a direct quote, so depending on who you believe will be subjective.
Also even if he was asked which player would you like to sign and he replied Messi. Does not mean he did not try and sign him. This is City we are talking about here. They tried signing Kaka for £100m in 2009 and offered him half a million a week according to reports. So the likely chance of them going for Messi is high especially with the ex Barcelona people in charge today.

14th October 2018 at 5:00 pm #27176Manchester City have denied offering to triple Lionel Messi’s wages but stopped short of refuting their interest in the Barcelona No 10.
Mundo Deportivo reported on Saturday that City had proposed Messi a contract worth in excess of €1m a week, with quotes attributed to their chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak forming the basis of its story.
Furthermore, a video subsequently leaked saw Al Mubarak answer ‘Messi’ when he was asked about the player he most regretted being unable to sign in his 10 years at the Etihad Stadium.
However, the English champions told Goal.com that they ‘absolutely refute’ the report, adding ‘Al Mubarak provided no extra information’.
On the other hand, AS notes City did not explicitly deny their interest in Messi, while Goal claims they had held ‘a long-term interest’ in signing the Argentine before he signed a new contract with Barca last year.

14th October 2018 at 7:24 pm #27181Mav, given Pep is Manager and the ex Barca men on the City board together with the ambitions of the Club to be the very best it would be naieve to believe City didn’t investigate the potential opportunity of getting Messi.
Obviously the figures both in fees and wages would have been eye watering but if Messi had become available City would have been favourites to sign him given the Barca connections but a number of the top Clubs in the PL and Europe would have been sniffing around Messi too including I suspect United. But it won’t happen now.

14th October 2018 at 8:10 pm #27185As Mav says Jim who wouldn’t want to sign Messi?
Would have been bonkers given City’s Barca connection not to try. Every top Club in Europe and the PL would have had a go if they thought they had a chance.
