It’s hard not to have your head turned when the likes of Barca and Real come calling,Pity it doesn’t look like it’s going to be as amicable as First thought.

17th August 2017 at 4:23 pm #3861Apparantly Howedes and Draxler are available for a combined circa £65mil.
2 German internationals.
1 a very experienced, very versatile defender who is a great leader and the other a very promising 2 footed attacker.
Both would improve our starting XI.
Surely we gotta be interested?_____________________________

17th August 2017 at 6:17 pm #3877Howedes would be a very good signing for Liverpool, as would Draxler. PSG probably need to start offloading some players and Draxler would bring in a decent fee for them, especially if they’re seriously going in for Mbappe!

17th August 2017 at 8:13 pm #3882I imagine we’ll be in for Draxler, but so will a few other clubs.
Let’s see what happens, lots of drama still to come in this window._____________________________

17th August 2017 at 8:43 pm #3883I hope we are in for Draxler but can see a coupla issues.
The first being the masssive wages he’s been on at PSG and the second would be how Klopp would react to him after turning us down in Jan. Klopp seems to only want players who are completely bought in, perhaps I’m wrong.Howedes is really a no brainer for me. An extremely experienced leader/defender who is also very versatile available for approx £20mil?!
Even if we signed VVD I’d still wanna sign him and we could offload Klavan.
Centreback options then being Matip, Howedes, VVD and Lovren. For very little outlay._____________________________

18th August 2017 at 9:13 am #3888AnonymousI don’t think we’ll go in for Draxler but you said he’d improve our starting 11. From a 433, where is he going? I ask because I can’t see us changing that top front 3 and so that ;leaves him to playing CM. Is his all round game going to be good enough for that?
As for this other chap, people seem to be very excited about him and as a German international defender, I admit that I’m hoping that we go for him (or someone else who’s good!).
I didn’t come here to talk about those 2 though really. It seems that Barca are indeed in talks with FSG to buy Coutinho. Now, did you guys catch the last day that separation that Klopp made from himself and the owners on this topic? He said something like “nothing has changed that I know of, they haven’t talked to me about it” or words to that effect. . . He said some other things about owners selling a player or keeping a player and he’s out of it and looking after the ones he has etc. I really really really hope that that wasn’t Klopp being left out of it, with a player sold from under him.
I say I hope this but I think it’s more likely that he might have been asked just how much he values Coutinho, only to tell them that he’s excellent but has some weaknesses that he could resolve by getting in another player. I’m sorry that this isn’t a very well written comment but hopefully my points gets across.
I would never want Klopp to feel resigned to losing potentially his best player against his will basically. There are only so many things like this that a top manager like Klopp would be willing to accept before thinking of his options.
Now, if FSG accepts a bid (which I am now expecting), will it be seriously under value? I can’t see Barca’s 3rd offer shooting up to at least £130m, so I guess they are going to flog him for £110m, or even as low as £100m. . which is just stupid if you ask me. . but what do I know.

18th August 2017 at 10:01 am #3890Why do you believe Barca are in talks with FSG to sell Coutinho?
FSG and Klopp have said he’s not for sale several times. They turned down both bids within an hr and have rejected his tranfer request.

18th August 2017 at 10:09 am #3898Unfortunately, I would be in agreement with Mak, I think the writing is on the wall with this one, same as we have with Bale a few years back. Dodgy back injuries and all… shame, on his day he can be a cracking little player and we all like those.

18th August 2017 at 10:28 am #3899AnonymousGinger, the sporting director of Barca has put his ass on the line by saying that they are negotiating with us. Things are difficult for Barca right now so maybe this is the act of desperation in an attempt to save his job at least until they find someone else to bid for, or FSGs tough talk is simply to get as high a price as possible.
I’m not saying “THIS IS HOW IT IS GINGER” but I think it’s a possibility. Once we found out that RB were serious about not selling, the story died. This one is still going and for their sporting director to say the things he’s said after we’ve made it “clear as day”, well. . as I said, he’s either desperate, delusional or he’s telling the truth.

18th August 2017 at 12:50 pm #3922AnonymousWell ya, they are. I mean if you look at it from their perspective, they can at least say they tried their best. Personally, I’m not looking forward to a season with an unhappy Coutinho who I no longer want at the club. I’m a soft touch and will forgive him with excuses about “this is how the game is” but he’s really stabbed us in the back here. My only thought right now is if maybe at some stage (a later window), we could get PSG or even Real in on the bidding to up the price to something that I feel he’s worth (in today’s market). Obviously, this comes with us having time to replace him. That ambush was a really low blow.

18th August 2017 at 3:53 pm #3931Another bid from Barca immediately turned down, approx £118mil.
Doesn’t sound like we’re in negotiations or close to a deal like Barca officials suggest.
Sounds like Barca are trying to throw money at it and we’re batting them away immediately.

18th August 2017 at 4:16 pm #3934That’s a huge bid. I wonder what they’ll go to before Liverpool see no choice but to sell. Liverpool must have a price in kind, despite their reluctance so far

18th August 2017 at 11:13 pm #3954Just saw that they rejected a bid for 118.
I feel a bit for all parties here, but I am glad that FSG have dug their heels in.
Yes Coutinho may be unhappy (and I guess it is up to Klopp to get the best out of him if he stays) but when it comes down to it, if Liverpool stick by their guns, that means that they have resisted the Barcelona hype machine.By that I mean the seemingly irresistible lure of huge money, playing for Barca and Spanish media pressure. How many times have we seen the newspapers there saying the deal is done, Barca have their man etc etc, just to turn a players head and unsettle them. It is bloody infuriating.
When RB refused to sell us Keita no matter the money, we suddenly realised that we would have to wait until he was available. I am hoping Barcelona do the same when we say no. It is about respect and realising that Liverpool do not have to sell to them.
For me I do not mind if a star moves on, it is modern football, as long as the club has time to sound out and get a replacement. We all remember Andy Carroll the panic buy? This would be a repeat of that, it is patently stupid for the interested parties to expect us to agree when we have no time to adjust. THAT is literally the only reason I am disappointed in Coutinho over this whole thing, because he knows that and is choosing to be selfish.

19th August 2017 at 3:04 am #3955Good post Dan. I still get the feeling a lot depends on this qualifier next week. I think we will still get a couple in before deadline day & whilst I think Couts will stay, it wouldn’t surprise me to see us take the money provided we do get a couple of quality 1st teamers. We need em mate, we have a serious lack of quality in depth at the moment & it doesn’t look like the injury gods will be kind to us again this season.

19th August 2017 at 7:56 am #3956Yeah, excellent post, Dan. I think we’re all sick of the 2 Spanish clubs coming over and taking our best players. Probably the 3 best players in the English Premiership in the last 10 years have ended up over there in Ronaldo, Bale and Suarez. But with all our bluster and indignance about the Barca and Real hype machines, is it really any different from the fan of say, Torquay United, who sees their best player go to Bristol Rovers? It’s the football food chain, and while Liverpool are relatively near the top of said food chain, Barca and Madrid are higher up. By and large, what they want, they get. We just have to ensure that we get a fee we’re happy with and then go and munch on someone lower down the food chain…hello, Southampton and Leipzig!!
I’m really split as to whether we should keep Phil. He is good, but he ain’t £120m good. On his day, he is excellent but he is inconsistent, and he regularly misses 10 to 15 games a season. Earlier in the window, I would have definitely taken the offer, but now…? I really don’t know.
