Threeps… Gomez is part of a seriously good, well drilled defensive unit. Remember Kyrus or mingolet at the back.. its impressive how signing a defender with a brain works out. i miss it at chelsea… Plus Terrance trent derby at right back and the maurading pict on the left flank… Is there a better more cohesive unit in the world game right now.
the secret to klopp is the legs and runners in midfield. Henderson, is just a bang average player but works very, very well in the system. Reckon Klopp could get Drinkwater doing what Henderson does which is essentially a shuttle runner. Gigi has more to his game but is a hard worker, Fabio is a brick with legs that run. basically, the midfield is dire yet is probably the most competitive fitness wise in the game and do the simple things well, ie give it to the front three who are electric.

30th January 2020 at 11:53 am #65337Sorry anyone who says our midfield is dire really doesn’t understand our tactics at all, or hasn’t watched our games enough to form an objective option. Very harsh on all 3 lads there 442.

30th January 2020 at 12:51 pm #65338One area of concern going forward, as I alluded to recently, is that Kloppโs strength and weakness is that he clearly likes to work with a closely knit group of players whom he trusts and develops a huge mentality with, as weโve seen. However, as we saw in the FA Cup, thereโs not much depth there (though Klopp I think has got frustrated with the fitness issues of the likes of Shaqiri and Keita).
And look at the front 3 – if theyโre all fit, he never ever changes them be it a league game or CL game. So whilst it may help our mentality to have this closely knit group, one only has to look at what happened at Dortmund, to worry about injuries and eventual burnout.
There is one good thing about losing Manรฉ & Salah in January 2021 for the AFCON – it should force Klopp into finding alternatives in the summer (assuming neither wants a new challenge somewhere else). But weโve got to get better and more reliable depth. A lot of this team have been playing continuously for the past 2 years, sometimes without a proper break in the summer due to international tournaments.
What happened at Dortmund should be ringing big alarm bells with Klopp.

30th January 2020 at 1:42 pm #65344AnonymousOur midfield is far from dire. They just aren’t flashy and are not the headline grabbers but Wijnaldum has been one of our best players this season. Fabinho is definitely not a brick with legs. He’s a DM who excels in those duties but he’s got a pass on him too. With the way we play, his vision isn’t really utilized as much as the others but it’s there. The lads who watch every match will know this.
“Henderson, is just a bang average player but works very, very well in the system”
There are calls for Hendo to be given POTY and whilst I don’t agree with it and think that this is part sentimentality, he’s put in some fantastic performances, improving his forward game over time. I may have agreed with you 18 months ago but ever since Fabinho has come in, the leash is off Hendo and he’s been a major factor in us pulling through in some matches this season. He’s set up some very nice plays, either directly assisting or not.
Gomez is truly awesome. There was a moment yesterday where he raced between 2 players who were trying to press him in defence. He just blazed between them like they weren’t moving. He’s the perfect partner for Van Dijk and his speed is a major part of it but the lad is brilliant, in general. Pep likes to call Laporte the best CB in the world or sometimes the best LCB in the world (sure). I tell you this, if Gomez can stay fit, The Van Dijk and Gomez partnership will go down in history as one of the best ever, anywhere.

30th January 2020 at 1:52 pm #65348AnonymousMikus, this is definitely food for thought. I think we’ve got to accept the downsides to Klopp’s methods, at least to some degree. I do sometimes wish he’d mix it up there with the front 3 but Shaqiri hasn’t worked out for Klopp. I like him when he plays but I’m not sure Klopp does, or he maybe doesn’t think he’s dedicated enough in training and/or his lifestyle. Who knows but he’s off int he summer surely. Then there is Keita, who I think we should sell. I’ve gone into it before, I’m sure you’ve read it. I think he’s a failed signing and the sooner we pull the band-aid off and replace him, the better.
Minamino is so so new so you can’t really judge but he doesn’t look anywhere near up to it in what I’ve seen of him so far. Obviously he needs time and he may need more than the others. Klopp has got to go out there and sign someone who can put the 3 lads up front under pressure for their position. Timo Werner is the name on everyone’s lips and it seems to be rightly so. He can play all positions and has improved a lot this season.
As for players maybe wanting to leave or not… You would say why on earth would anyone want to leave this club and with the PL inbound and if we can show this form in the CL another season, there would be no sporting reason to leave but… I have a feeling that one of Salah or Mane might be off in the summer. I’m thinking Salah more than Mane. Just a gut feelings, along with comments he made after we won the CL.
Who knows, maybe it’s all meaningless and he just thought the PL was unwinnable and wanted a league title? I hope so. He really shined for us last night with Mane not in the team.

30th January 2020 at 2:06 pm #65353Liverpool’s back 5 are superb as is their front 3 the midfield is very good and fits exactly the all action way that Klopp wants his team to play.
I would though bet a pound to a penny that improving midfield will be Klopp’s main priority in the Summer transfer window. But we’ll see.

30th January 2020 at 2:30 pm #65356AnonymousI can see that possibility, Nine. I mean, regardless of what I’ve said above, midfield is still technically the weakest area. It’s just that the other 2 are insanely strong. It’s only natural that Klopp might look to improve there. Of course last summer he said that the best way forward was on the training pitch and not the transfer market. You can’t say he was wrong either, although many doubted him, at least partially.
It all goes back to a KDB type player. His level is unachievable but maybe they are watching for the next KDB and have some people in mind. To get a CM with real creativity but who also works hard defensively has got to be the task for the scouts. They already know how to improve the front line. Timo wouldn’t be cheap but we know where he is and likely how much he’d cost… so all the research is done.
We’ll just have to see but I would definitely like LFC to get Gini signed and sealed. Such a good player deserves to have his future at the club secure.

30th January 2020 at 2:54 pm #65369What makes Liverpool’s achievement this season so remarkable is that for the last 3 transfer windows our biggest signing has been Minamino at ยฃ7.25m. Adrian and Van der Berg last summer for pennies and nothing last January…and yet we’ve got better. I tell you, Klopp is a genius!

30th January 2020 at 3:16 pm #65377AnonymousGuys, sorry, you can wax lyrical about liverpool, but creativity is not something i would associate with Liverpools midfield.
Our midfield is dire, Kante is the only worldy we have in the mix… He took your midfield to pieces in istanbul, schooled your lot and wasnt fully fit.
It’s not a criticism to say your midfield is dire… i have watched Liverpool many times this season and they, like chelsea’s midfield, offer really very little going forward. Our midfield three is the worst ive seen in a decade or more and its little wonder Kante is rumoured to be looking for a way out.
the point im making is simply that you have an engine room that can run their guts out and fill the space, stop opposing teams playing and nullify oppositions tactics. It really isnt pretty, but its what your side is built around, your midfielders are essentially better sandbag fillers and trench diggers than anyone else in the premiership… Henderson has 3 assists and 2 goals. Ox two goals, Milner, 2 goals 2 assists. Fabio, 1 goal 1 assist. It is hardly an exciting midfield… It is simply incredibly well drilled. Kieta 1 goal 1 assist… Lady gigi, 2 goals.
Its not exactly a midfield that excites me as a neutral looking in. Its a vital clog in the team ethic and nothing more, but to call it creative or exciting.. nope… you can have the title and celebrations, but your not going to tell me your midfield is exciting or expansive…

I don’t think anyone is saying that our midfield is amazingly creative. That said, they aren’t just work horses. The thing is though, a huge amount of our creativity comes from the Robertson and Trent. Then after that you have Firmino dropping deep to seed the next phase. I’d say the same goes for the other 2 to a lesser extent but look at Liverpool’s 2nd goal last night. It’s about half way through this (highlights in link below). Hendo puts it forward to Salah, who puts Oxlade through. That was a break-away goal but still pretty creative. That through ball from Salah was as good as any creative midfielder could do:

Obviously you can always look to improve but there are 2 players from the 3 that we have that I would absolutely not drop for anyone.

30th January 2020 at 4:59 pm #65386No one called it creative or exciting though mate.
Itโs a vital cog of the team. We sold our most creative midfielder in couthino and we havenโt missed him one bit.
Winjildium is an excellent player. Henderson I wonโt get into ad we wonโt agree. Brilliant captain

30th January 2020 at 5:07 pm #65389Our midfields movement is unreal. We can pass the ball all day long.
That midfield has got to 2 cl finals, winning one and we are top of the pl. to call them sand baggers is a huge insult to them ?
If they were dire then we would t be doing what we are doing.
Milner has been our best ever free signing.

30th January 2020 at 5:38 pm #65393Anonymous? donโt take offence Sean. Itโs a trend I guess to have three players who boss the midfield. Stop teams playing.
Liverpool have been brilliant for a few seasons now and what I meant by digging and filling is, theyre the people you want around you to do the dirty grunt work. Youโre front three are given a platform. Without the bricks behind theyโd be half the players they are.
The fact no team can stop it this season simply suggests to me everyone knows their jobs and is doing it to the letter of klopps law. Milner has been one of the fittest midfielders in the premiership. Full stop.
Anyhow, enjoy the title run in… itโs yours to throw away.

30th January 2020 at 6:32 pm #65434Without the midfield we’ve got, we wouldn’t be able to play the way we do. Dare I say it, without Hendo, Gini and Fab, Trent and Robbo wouldn’t be half as lauded as they are. In fact I’d go further and say they would be being criticised for not doing their ‘main’ job well enough. In fact, because of our midfield, defending is now NOT their main job. I agree with comments above and would not swap any of our main 3 midfielders for any currently playing in the Premiership, with the exception of De Bruyne, who I absolutely love watching as a player.

30th January 2020 at 6:33 pm #65435Just because Liverpool are World, European, and soon to be PL Champions means they can sit back and cooly decide what areas might need strengthening in the Summer to make them even better. Klopp is quite good at that.?

30th January 2020 at 7:15 pm #65494AnonymousExactly HH, agree with all of that, even what you said about defending maybe no longer being Trent and Robbos main job. They have the midfield to help them defend but they also have Mane and even Salah sometimes helping… Mane much more so of course.
Nine, we’ve got Edwards working away in the background I’m sure. Utd signed an excellent player today. This guy might keep Ole in a job. Maybe with a good summer they might challenge us next season. I mean, come on, we’re not going to repeat this insanity next term.
