We are moving forward; most definitely on the evidence of last night and the fact that we are challenging for 4 competitions which probably wasn’t the expectation at the start of campaign 23/24 considering too having lost out on our supposed transfer targets.
What’s vividly shun that’s been a real blessing is players occupying key positions otherwise left by regulars that have suffered injuries stepping up and making those places their own. The manager now has a positive selection headache.
This is perfect as we’ve approached a crucial time of the season where we’re going to need the blood-sweat-tears from everybody. January was busy, but we got through it and won all our PL matches as well as securing a Cup final and progressing in another.
So we reset and enter a brand new month February. I am realistically expecting us for 7 points from our 3 matches. I would expect a draw on Sunday. This wouldn’t be a bad result. We have plus 5 over Man City on goal difference and that to me counts as an extra point.
I expect them to win their next 4 games and that would put them level with us on GD. Don’t forget we play them at home next month. My slight worry is thee Europa and picking up injuries so it’s now a matter of being able to utilize our squad efficiently and effectively.

3rd February 2024 at 11:35 am #212438Not at all meaning to sound like it’s somehow information in the know (it isn’t), but my friend lives in Villarreal and he says that the locals there are under the assumption that Xabi Alonso is going to Liverpool (and not Real).
I find it interesting because usually, they’d be saying the opposite. That town may have a very large stadium for its actual size (ridiculous really) but it’s full of Real supporters.
Are we looking at a very poorly kept/open secret here?

3rd February 2024 at 1:34 pm #212445Mak, the only thing that bugs me about Alonso (not in a horrible way) is his lack of experience.

3rd February 2024 at 1:50 pm #212446Ya for sure. I think we’ve got to get comfortable with it though because we don’t have the luxury of time. I guess from here until the end of the season you might have 1-2 top managers who will be thinking they could leave and come to us but really it’s a bit of a disadvantage when you are choosing when to replace a manager.
If Alonso can keep things going and wins the Bundelige, that will be pretty incredible. What concerns me is how he might look at this team and think that he wants to get it setup like how he has with Leverkusen. That might get awkward.
Ya, I’m really unsure about everything but there’s nothing that can be done about this. I think we’ve got to make the most out of this season and we’ll just have to roll all of the dice this summer.

4th February 2024 at 9:59 pm #212494Played the occasion today not the game. Evidently against top teams away from home we’re lacking. Be it Leadership, organization, being vocal, and especially the deep midfielder we were crying out for was in reluctance (not the first time) on MacAllister.
He doesn’t want to play there. Maybe something will be in fruition from the Documentary that has now been bought by Disney when Klopp finally leaves as as a Manager. We lost 2nd Balls and we didn’t counter act Jorginho. I know what he was like at Chelsea. He’s designed to stifle, nothing else. Why don’t the players at the top drop deep and bring themselves into play to make things happen instead of reliance?
I think in all honestly, Jurgen had balls-up our selection/subs/tactics.
Szobo not being able to play threw a bit of a Spanner. Gravenberch on this occasion didn’t really offer right-side nor defensive duties.
Away from home needs more Respect. Of course try and go for it, but the first Rule of Thumb is to set out your stall. I don’t like ‘killing time’. It made me nervous Van Dijk and Konate exchanging then Alisson, then rinse and repeat. What was all that about?
I think between the lines, more can be and needs to be done for a so-called Liverpool 2.0 but probably Klopp feels he doesn’t have it in him to channel that level of commitment required, especially against strict spending from the owners and FFP.
Maybe therefore, an Alonso may be welcomed to either deconstruct or take over to add pieces of the jigsaw necessary. Mo Salah and Van Dijk would be coming to the end of their tenure.

6th February 2024 at 11:29 am #212518Our scheduling has changed a little bit.
https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/fixtures-update-three-premier-league-changes-liverpool-march
Everton game may be postponed if Liverpool make it to the quarters of the FA Cup.
Might well be good for us as we face them straight after Man City.
We need players back rather than players one after another being absent.
City are back to their lethal frightening best I have to say. They are not letting up and it’s going to take some favours from elsewhere and for us to go ourselves 15 games unbeaten. Man United and Everton away most likely will be our nemesis though so we’re really going to need courage, character and cleverness to get over the line.
Still in 3 Cup Comps. Later this month will be our first test. Should we seal that, we’ll be hungry for more I’m sure.

12th February 2024 at 3:58 pm #21262310 players on display as injured or another reason of unavailable.
We should be getting back 4/5 for this weekend. No games and no excuses irrespective of Lunchtime Kick Off. We need to be ready and not an early goal from the opposition to wake us up. Tough game no doubt.
We should be getting back I’m hoping either/or Thiago and Bajcetic for the Cup Final.

12th February 2024 at 7:05 pm #212624Mav, no didnt get to watch it, don’t have the Bundesliga package. But I have seen the highlights and reports and it sounded like Leverkusen were superb. What he is doing there is simply staggering, bare in mind he took over the team in or just above the relegation zone.
Can he replicate this at Liverpool? Will he stick with 3 at the back? I dont see that he has to just because he plays with 3 now. Part of his game is the 3 and 2 holding midfielders are all good on the ball and can play their own mini-game to draw the opposion to them. With arguably better players at Liverpool maybe he will be happy to use only 2 centre backs.
I think his style will excite Liverpool fans if he does indeed take over. As a very popular player he will be given extra time but I think if the fans can get into what he is trying to do early on then that helps even if results don’t go 100% the way they want them to (like when Klopp started).

13th February 2024 at 7:29 am #212626I watched the first 30-35 minutes and it was all very 1-sided… Munich were playing very much like Conte’s Spuds used too… 3 CB’s, Wingbacks playing as full-backs, and trying to hit on the counter… one could argue they were giving Leverkusan far too much time and space to knock the ball about but if I were a Pool fan, I wouldn’t be getting my knickers in a knot about Alonso taking over….

13th February 2024 at 3:03 pm #212628That’s because Chucky it doesn’t involve Spurs and you’ve never said anything positive about anyone or anything unless it’s to do with your team.
Personally I think what he is doing with an unfancied team is fantastic and doing it whilst playing entertaining football. No manager appointment is guaranteed unless you’re already run by a state that’s not afraid to bend the rules, but I think any Liverpool or indeed Munich or Madrid fan is within their rights to be excited over this potential appointment. (Think Madrid can be ruled out as CA recently signed an extension and they are doing well this season but you never know).

(How was any of that negative? I was surprised how bad Munich were, wasn’t knocking anybody else!)

19th February 2024 at 4:07 pm #212683“With arguably better players at Liverpool maybe he will be happy to use only 2 centre-backs.”
Exactly. I mean Klopp didn’t come here and keep playing as Dortmund did. A lot of manager do like to stick to their ways but the greats will make the best of the strengths that their squad has and make signings to make it work.
I celebrated when I heard that Bayern lost again but a cold idea came over me. What if Bayern move faster than we do? They are now 8 points behind with equal games played.
Bayern won’t hang around, so we better get moving.
With the hope that we do go for and get Alonso, I look at this team and think he’ll enjoy the challenge of making Trent work here, in his own way. I also look at the likes of Mac Allister and think he’ll see a lot that he can get out of him.
…
I think Klopp or someone else at the club said that we’ll be getting a Sporting Director before we go after a new manager and I hope that it’s actually true. They have got to know that we can’t always do things in the order that we’d prefer. If we don’t get Alonso then who do we get? Everyone keeps saying De Zerbi and the guy could be an absolute legend, I don’t know much about him TBH but everyone else seems to, or they are on the hype train.Maybe I need to pay more attention to this guy? I know he is doing very well considering the sales they made. Is he doing well enough that we let Alonso get swept up by Bayern (the blackhole of the Bundesliga)?

The last rumour I heard was West ham technical director Tim Steidten who basically gave a come and get me plea a week or two ago. According to todays Guardian the rumours that he’s leaving are getting stronger.
And what is one of his most famous achievements? He was the guy that appointed Alonso at Leverkusen. Maybe this is something to keep an eye on.

20th February 2024 at 2:11 pm #212687Horrible time to have a game mid week before a final especially when we really are down to our bare bones. Jones, jota, szobo, matip, taa, thiago, alisson all injured.
Salah and darwin rumoured aswell. We cant afford another injury with the amount of games we have coming up.
Huge week coming up. Real physical game tomorrow.luton just keep going. We really could do without this game

20th February 2024 at 8:26 pm #212688As I said on the other site, if we can keep the spine of Alison, Van Dijk/Konate, Endo, & Salah/Nunez relatively intact, we should be ok, i.e. when we had neither Endo, nor Salah or Nunez vs Arsenal, I knew weβd struggle. Thatβs not to say the other injuries arenβt concerning and going to cause us issues, but I think that spine keeps us solid with enough flair to worry the opposition. But we will need some players back soon to help spread the load of games.

21st February 2024 at 12:49 am #212689It’s pretty far from ideal alright but if you want to win titles, you have to overcome these kinds of challenges. I’m just glad that they are at least a low-quality team and if we can manage to get an early goal, their heads might drop a bit.
3 points first, potentially tired players off as soon as we have the game mostly locked up.
