I feel Klopp’s mindset is adjusted a little towards thinking the attack will outweigh the defense and essentially ‘take care of everything’.
Indeed nil. See also last season when we went through that awful period in the winter, but the 433 just persisted and persisted, almost in the hope that the front 3 would save us. I think he is a bit blinkered in that way. So was Rodgers.

8th November 2021 at 10:51 am #188641AnonymousI don’t think that the persistence on 433 was the issue. The players heads weren’t right last season. This time, I think we might have a personnel issue. The system has worked before, teams haven’t just figured us out. The weaknesses to this system were always there to be attempted, we just dealt with the problems better.
Of course, Trent and Robertson were more effective going forward back then too. We can’t blame them being pinned back, as they managed to get forward a lot, it just wasnt working for Robbo over there yesterday. We don’t have the midfield to be helping them defensively though. Ox is nothing on Gini, defensively.

8th November 2021 at 1:20 pm #188645I think the system is based on calculated risks, but that if everyone does his job and is on form, those risks can be mitigated. The problem is we have an almost constantly changing midfield. Van Dijk isn’t up to his standards yet, and a few others aren’t on form.
But I will say a big reason for the loss yesterday was that if you get a team like West Ham, who aren’t as littered with talent as the big clubs, but who can be very organised and physical, particularly during corners, the big teams don’t like that, particularly in a climate now where players are protected, especially the goalkeeper. And I think the big teams get too comfortable with being protected…until they meet a West Ham team and they don’t deal with them very well at all and they think the referee will come to the rescue.

8th November 2021 at 10:10 pm #188662We definitely struggled with West Ham’s physical side. The designed themselves in 2 packs and were efficient closing us down to defend and break up play, then breaking away on the counter to exploit our space.
Alisson could be made a scapegoat, but collectively our defenders failed to talk ownership in supporting Alisson and placing themselves either on the front or back post of the corner and getting back on Fornals’ goal. Trent will always be a special free-kick taker but as far as running back goes, he’s now always consistent. Matip can’t be relied on to deal with the physical intimidation. Perhaps we should have thought about Konate. The midfielders themselves too have a lot to answer for.
Is this essentially our own doing the way we are designing ourselves in the set up? Its as if every counter-attack exposed us entirely. We have been a lot better than this away from home. Yesterday’s manner of defeat does feel accentuated and reflects our first loss in 25 matches.

16th November 2021 at 11:12 am #189018Yeah good to see Elliot back in training. As talked about in the other thread, we need to really think about the crux of the utilizing our squad and not just depend on certain regular first teamers. I think if anything, that will benefit us in more than one way in sustaining a challenge for all 4 competitions.

16th November 2021 at 11:17 am #189020Problems all over the place. No press in midfield, cut open dar to easily, high line getting exploited constantly, defending set pieces dreadful
We need to vastly improve or we be out of the title race in next few games
Huge period for us coming up that will make or break our season

16th November 2021 at 11:38 am #189021Anyone else starting to wonder if we have deeper problems than we think? i.e. it’s deeper than just a few injuries in midfield?
I’ve just been looking at our line ups during our dreadful form last season in the winter which was blamed on bad injuries everywhere. But was it really that bad? During a run of 4 straight defeats, we still had a midfield containing Wijnaldum, Milner, Jones, and Thiago. We still had Salah, Firmino & Mane up top. The only real anomaly was Henderson playing in defence.
We’re also told how vital Fabinho is in our midfield. Didn’t make any difference in the recent game at West Ham though.
The only correlation I can see between our poor form and player availability is the form or non availability of Van Dijk. I think a few other things are going on though. Other teams have adapted to how we play and are simply less afraid to play us. Indeed a simple ball over the top can undo us. Or being physical in our box. I think its affecting our confidence that we know we’re vulnerable even if we do seem to be still playing well up front. Even at 2-0 up, I wouldn’t feel completely confident about us winning, which is actually a problem we had with Klopp in the seasons before we won the league. So has Klopp just taken us back a step in making us too gung-ho? That’s what it feels like.

16th November 2021 at 12:13 pm #189022Mikus, I think it’s pretty much been ‘The Liverpool Way’ 😀
Top Heavy in Attack of abundance in quality, but feeble at the other end of the pitch bar the fact that there were more Leaders and Dictatorship – ala the late 80s.
I have seen criticism aimed at Fabinho on social media, but then the same could be said collectively about our defenders; where was the support for Alisson?
19/20 when we finally nailed it expressed much more discipline, shape and organization not to mention just the desire-drive-determination to win. It was compelling that we were determined from the season before of finishing Runners Up on 96 points.
If we are to dissect, the whole truth of the matter starring at us is that Van-Dijk needs a World Class Centre half and perhaps in need of a World Class Midfielder and another Full-back. That takes in excess of 100 million in which FSG will essentially allow via Net-Spend.

16th November 2021 at 12:16 pm #189023I said that a while back mikuis. We were so solid when we won the league but not as good to watch. The warnings signs were there well before the BRighton game even with fabhino in the midfield
Threeps made a very good point. Everything is inter linked . If the press is off, the high line is exploited etc. Injuries are not helping but it’s a much stronger side then last season. Even with vvd we still had conceded 11 goals in 5 games last season
Last season was crazy. I really think we missed the crowds etc. Individual mistakes are killing us now. Midfield is changing far to much each game. We are just to loose and open
We need to sort it out quickly. We are far to easy to play againest and we concede far to many chances. We are still in a great position but we have a real tough run coming up. Arsenal, Everton away, spurs away, Leicester abd Chelsea away . Be interesting to see were we after the 3td of jan

16th November 2021 at 12:25 pm #189025I just don’t know if a bit of arrogance has crept into our game, or we’re trying too hard to resurrect the good times by going too gung-ho. Either way, Klopp’s priority over the next few games should be not to concede.

16th November 2021 at 1:10 pm #189026I think perhaps we’re a little bit too hard on ourselves.
Reasons:
– Title which we desperately want to achieve because we are capable even though of slight deficiencies in our squad (Gini’s void)
– Equal Man U’s record – let’s be honest, they’re not a threat.
– Probably our best chance (from above)
– Man City and Chelsea have the squad and are our main level of threat
