7th July 2019 at 4:22 am #43112Anonymous“Threeps, So would you be happy if we signed no one?”
I know this wasn’t asked of me Sean but if you don’t mind, I’d like to give my thoughts on this, as I’ve pondered it quite a bit over the last month or so.
It’s tough to answer this with yes/no directness, as we’ve seen a few leave, maybe more to follow too but I’m extremely close to just saying yes. The only thing holding me back is that I think we might sign 1 player and I don’t even think he’ll be for the first 11.
So, I’m essentially saying yes. Sturridge is replaced by Brewster (without needing to sign anyone). Lovren seems to be staying but then there is Moreno, who may need to be replaced but by a minor signing.
I’d prefer we did sign someone up top but I know well enough what Klopp wants and we should let him do it his way. It’s working. If we don’t need to spend then we should save or funnel the money into development of the stadium. Klopp has spoken of improving things further from here on the training pitch, so progression is still in the offing.
Look, I’m just gonna say yes, I would be happy if we signed nobody. Milner can cover for Robertson… and for the record, this is the only transfer window where I could answer yes to, since I’ve been a fan.

7th July 2019 at 9:21 am #43115I just think we need to show a statement mak mate.
We got so lucky with injuries last season. It’s very hard to think of anyone we can sign that can fill the front 3 positions.
We have an excellent squad and I fully trust klopp but we need a couple of new ga es to fresher things up. We could have well over 60 games.
I’d like see Milner extend his contract for another year. His experience is invaluable. Along with Gary mac are best ever free signing.
I see Egypt were knocked out so that’s great for us. We might see Salah back for chairs shield

7th July 2019 at 10:44 am #43116I think we do need to think about a left-back to cover for Robertson as Milner is getting on. I don’t know how much more years he has left for us. We could also definitely do with a Striker just to inject more fire into our attack.

7th July 2019 at 11:01 am #43117A striker in what capacity though Nil? Back up or first teamer? Who does he replace?

7th July 2019 at 12:08 pm #431183ps, what I’m thinking of mate is the bigger picture and how we use our first team players and utilise our squad so that we get the best results in terms of physical fitness and quality, particularly if we are going to try and regularly challenge for the main trophies.
This will entail around 60 odd games and realistically, we can’t for example expect Van Dijk or Salah to play every game.
Whoever will be signed in the future going forward I’m sure will be made aware by Klopp of what’s on the table. Any signings now would be more on the emphasis of adding to the squad so that Klopp can tweak the first team if he chooses to do so and maintain that level of freshness.
Cheers

7th July 2019 at 12:28 pm #43119I agree Sean, it only takes an injury or 2 to 1 or more of our front 3 & we lose a lot. We will have plenty of games for another quality attacking player to get a lot of game time so I can’t see that as being an issue.
We are chasing the holy grail & the most expensive squad ever & they will spend again & improve so whilst the theory of improving what we have on the practice pitch is noble & no doubt we will improve, IMO the reality is we will slip further behind if we don’t buy some more quality. Just my opinion & I know some won’t agree but it’s how I see it._____________________________

7th July 2019 at 1:14 pm #43120But Nil, for CB we have Gomez, Matip and Lovren maybe Van Den Berg along side VvD. Up top besides are main 3 we have Shaq, Brewster, Origi. Not sure what you mean about the bigger picture, you’ve not really explained what you mean.
Everyone that keeps saying we need more players I ask who do you think would come in and be second choice? Yes there are a lot of games but they will still be on the bench in the important games if all 3 are fit, they are still deputies. And whose place will they take from the list of players above?
The only type of players I think are ok with such a role will be either kids that we can develop and give match experience to (but we have Van Den Berg and Brewster) or an old head, like Mario Gomez whom I believe we were interested in but nothing happened. The likes of Werner or Pepe are unrealistic unless they are first choice and that means losing one of our 3 forwards.
You know sometimes it’s works well not to buy players especially for a team in the ascendancy, for which we certainly are. Not sure what Oz mean by we will slip further behind, that implies we are already slipping behind for which I strongly disagree.

7th July 2019 at 1:36 pm #431213ps, sorry to disagree mate. I’m afraid I’m slightly with Oz on the ideal to buy a couple of players not as a reboot, but as a booster.
Manchester City model works even playing one of their own in Phil Foden. If you have a greater depth of a squad, you have more choice. If it wasn’t for Van Dijk, we would have struggled with Klopp’s ‘plan b’ in able to shut-up-shop.
I can’t really embellish any from my previous reply and this other than to use our own example historically from the 80s when Kenny Dalglish didn’t allow the team to rest on their laurels. Take Ronny Rosenthal as an example. He was our Super-sub at one point.
I can’t see the concept doing any harm as long as everybody’s happy and singing from the same hymn sheet.

7th July 2019 at 1:56 pm #43122No need to be sorry about disagreeing, would be a pretty boring site if we all agreed.
I get what you and others are saying, but so far no one has said what I would say a realistic plan about utilising all these wonderful additions. Just saying theres plenty of games or whatever happens if someone gets injured just backs up my viewpoint that we’re looking for deputy players, and marquee players won’t sign to sit on the bench for most matches when they can be the star elsewhere.

7th July 2019 at 2:25 pm #43124I’m also coming from the angle of trying to focus more on nailing domestic cups. How long ago has it been since we’ve won both the FA Cup and The League Cup?
If Klopp won’t play his first 11 or involve them as little in the more earlier rounds of both competitions, then whoever is chosen as an alternative needs to be able to deliver the goods.
Plus, now have a history in exiting early than trying to hold on. This is what I mean by having a strong and a good depth of the squad.

7th July 2019 at 3:50 pm #43125Anonymous“I’d like see Milner extend his contract for another year.”
Did he not? I thought this was done but I could be wrong. We definitely need him to stay, seriously under-rated player, ever since he joined. It was him that I was happiest for, when we lifted the CL. Think I went on about that before though 😛
We were lucky with injuries alright. I’d not complain if we signed someone but if Klopp is happy like this, then I am. You know he could go right out about get 2 x £50m players if he wanted. We’re also currently at a pretty much all time high in terms of player draw power but here we are, going after nobody. They say that the best time to look for a job is when you already have one.. that might go for top talent also. Clubs couldn’t quite hold us to ransom.Of course they know we’re gonna be fairly rich but ya..
My own opinion is that Milner is the bigger free signing, over Gary Mac… Both super important players though.
“I think we do need to think about a left-back to cover for Robertson as Milner is getting on.”
Milner has always been “getting on”. He’s been bashed with this by our own fans for years now, yet he shows no signs of slowing down. I’m not suggesting that you’re personally attacking him or anything, just that this has been the stick with which we all under-estimate Milner with. I’ve yet to see any signs of him aging. Some players have got more in their legs than others. Now, ya, he finally is getting up there but given that he was able to play first team football without any signs, I think he can definitely cover another position, for just one season. I mean, speed may be a problem for him at LB but his game intelligence usually more than makes up for it.
Nil, what you say about a striker. We will have 60 or so games , sure but we’ve got to have time for Origi to play, or he’ll be off. There is a valid argument out there to suggest that maybe that should be the case anyway, as he can be a very frustrating player when started.
The thing is though and this is just me but I think he’s earned the right to another chance to see if he can kick on. Without him, we don’t challenge for the PL and we likely don’t win the PL. Never seen a player play so few minutes and score so many super important goals. The guy goes into a hyper-focus state when the clock is running out and that is a quality that we need to explore and unearth further.
My thoughts are that a player like Origi gets both domestic cups AND some PL matches, when suitable. Who for? Mane or Firmino. Then there is Brewster who WILL get some games also. He’s been promised this. I think you can find video/quotes of Klopp saying this (I’m 95% sure I saw one before).
“I agree Sean, it only takes an injury or 2 to 1 or more of our front 3 & we lose a lot.”
Unfortunately this is the case.. Until people realise that Brewster is the next big thing. Klopp seems to think so and this isn’t just from watching him. It’s from working with him. I think Klopp knows we have a big star in the making and he’s almost always right about these things lads. Let’s trust that this guy is gonna be like a new signing. Seriously, pretend Brewster is a new £30m up and comer, would we all be excited then? If Klopp is excited, I’m fucking excited.

7th July 2019 at 4:04 pm #43126Anonymous“whilst the theory of improving what we have on the practice pitch is noble & no doubt we will improve, IMO the reality is we will slip further behind if we don’t buy some more quality.”
Oz me old chum, Klopp has said (paraphrasing) that the BEST way for him to go forward from where we are at right now is not in signing new players but in improving on the training pitch.
What I take from this is that he is happy with his chassis, his engine, his transmission etc etc. It’s all assembled and he’s going to calibrate everything to get it running efficiently. He doesn’t have a use for the ‘What Transmission’ magazines that are open on his coffee table anymore and is more interested in configuring it so he can get from 1-60 faster. He doesn’t want to buy a new engine when he can chip the one he installed last season and get it putting out more BHP.
Sorry for the endless analogy, I swear, I’m not Rafa, honest 😛 … but the analogy fits. We’re in the final phase of Klopp’s project (in terms of team development). There’s nothing noble going on at all and no half measures either. Klopp REALLY thinks the way forward here is on the training pitch and not in bringing in new players. Everything from here is tweaking and polishing and we’ll see an improved next season for it too.

12th July 2019 at 11:22 am #43272Good win and start to our pre-season campaign yesterday against Tranmere. 6-0.
Brewster finding the net twice and catching Klopp’s eye. Good to actually see Mignolet play and keep a clean sheet. Forgot about Clyne too as he had a good game.
Milner too.
