My post seems to have disappeared: reposting for information:
Can understand that Steveo with regards to new players freshening things up, though we’ll see how quickly Emery can instil that mentality into the team. He obviously did it at Sevilla, though how much of that was down to him and what he already had at the club I’m not sure. I’d still like to see more players coming through at all the academies. If there’s one image that stood out for me with Arsenal over recent decades, it was Jack Wilshere looking like the only one who cared in many games, raising his arms in frustration and trying to get players fired up. Arsenal just need more of that for me. As for Liverpool, we’ll see. For Klopp, it’s very much a case if less is more which to be fair is what he’s built a lot of his success on, though one does worry if he’s been a touch naive this summer. Time will tell. Obviously if Ox and Keita stay fit and deliver, those are effectively two new signings, though given their injury records, that’s a potential worry.
As for the game this week, if we keep up with this high line to play the offside trap it’s going to be a case of watching behind the curtains for me – VAR may well be adopted a few times. I do wonder if Klopp will adapt a bit more given Arsenal’s strengths. At the moment I’d probably say draw given where both teams are at.

20th August 2019 at 12:06 pm #45936stevo, transfer expenditure is spread out, which is why clubs tend not to have 2 big summers in succession. If the right player was available Im sure pool would have spent, but they have so much expenditure to account for from last few seasons they wont just buy for sake of spending. Pool have ruled the market in terms of the kind of strategy you are praising kroenke for since klopp arrived. Wouldnt be surprised if they get timo werner in jan or on a pre contract for free summer move. I dont think winning CL changed pools strategy, they are evidentally too astute in the market to change plans based on one game, although arsenal seem to be bragging that their plans were completely changed by 45 mins? Cant act in a reactionary way then go on a pr mission to convince everyone of how proactive they are. The problems have been obvious pre emery, shouldnt have taken a battering fron chelsea on last day of the season to notice, but if it helped you are welcome, thank god you didnt win eh? 😉

20th August 2019 at 12:57 pm #45937to be fair we dont know what the plans changed from, maybe they changed in respect of if we won we would have CL money as part of the budget and by not we had a small budget but had to find a new and aggresive way to get players in
never in a million years did i see Pepe coming and the way its structured is very good, its not just who we got and how much but how we are paying, also who we have cleared from the books and who mayu yet still go, its looking a slimmer trimmer leaner squad with lots of youth and talent, still a way to go as ive said but for the first time im starting to feel or recognise the plan the club are trying to follow but these things take time….
as for pool waht im saying about them is they couldnt earn more moeny than they did last year and riding high in all terms including player attraction, are you saying there sint at least ONE position they could not have if not improved on would have at least been as good and thus strenthen the squad (like city)?
im sure they could have got at least one marquee signing and stayed well within FFP and taken a step forward instead of treading water, its a dangerous game, we used to do it all the time so i know!
i also dont think their strateghy changed for winning the CL final…

20th August 2019 at 1:05 pm #45939I think at Arsenal, Wenger became far too powerful a figure at the club with regards to transfers – it seems there was no internal pressure on him. He called all the shots and it’s arguably what ultimately cost him his job. Now with him gone, I think the recruitment team can finally start to exert their own pressure. In an ideal world, the relationship between the manager and the recruitment team has to be a two way street, with neither party becoming too powerful. At City, even having Guardiola, arguably the best manager in the world, you still sense they very much have an independent transfer team constantly looking for players and somewhat pressuring Guardiola to look at them. That certainly seems to be the case at Chelsea which is why they cope so well with changes in management. At Liverpool, I think whilst the relationship between Klopp and the recruitment team looks a good one, they just have to be very careful that Klopp doesn’t become too powerful (as tempting as that might be).

20th August 2019 at 1:16 pm #45940Tierney is a snip at 25m. He is excellent going forward but he is no slouch of a defender either. Very good player

20th August 2019 at 1:21 pm #45941stevo, im only having a bit of fun, of course it would have been a bit different if you had qualified for CL, and you have had a good window, but I cant help mocking kroenke for his comments because it is just self promoting babble. As for pool, I still think its a tough ask to iwprove on a squad that earned 97 points. I think their logic is unless a special player becomes available the bigger risk is unsettling the squad they have.

20th August 2019 at 1:41 pm #45942Agree with everything Lucky says above although Fergie’s mantra was always don’t stand still no matter how strong they were as a team and what they won although in his letter years that seemed to change.
I think Arsenal have some good people behind the scenes now but it’s not rocket science but players come off or they don’t come off.
Pepe might prove to be a great signing but he could also not be such a great signing both City and United wanted Sanchez and Arsenal wanted him to stay but that one’s been an awful transfer.
Currently Klopp and Liverpool have the best recent record on transfers imo.

20th August 2019 at 1:42 pm #45943i get what you say about pool but we have seen this so many times form them and others, if you stand still you lose ground and takes longer to get back up…
what im saying is i think of all the players moving around theere was one special player that would fit the bill, the point is they were NEVER in for anyone like this….i think by next summer that will feel a mistake
i always thought pepe would be the right player for them to be honest or fernandes, again strong squad players if nothing else and coudl be structured to not break the bank too so the can compete with citys squad not just the 1st 11

20th August 2019 at 3:08 pm #45951Lucky-Arse had a much, much better window than United, both in terms of comings & clearing the deadwood, imho. They got rid of Lichsteiner,Kosc,Cech,Wellbeck, and did not break the bank to keep Ramsey. They are also trying to get rid of Mustafi,Monreal,Ozil and Miki, plus got a very, very good deal for Iwoby.Whereas United only managed to offload Valencia,Herrera & Lukaku, plus,it seems Sanchez might be off too, with us paying 75% of his salary-what a waste he has been!

20th August 2019 at 3:09 pm #45952Buffy-But next summer Real Madrid will sign the Instagramvirus,Mane and Mbappe,so there is no chance DC will have room in that team.

20th August 2019 at 3:33 pm #45964stevo you really think pepe was an option for pool? I dont as I dont see him wanting to be back up to mane and salah when he could start regularly for you

20th August 2019 at 3:35 pm #45965Lucky-We have only improved our defence,we have no midfield and our main striker has not been replaced. If PogbaInstagram does not perform,we are fooked[in the words pf Shearer].

20th August 2019 at 3:35 pm #45966Mav, says who of the really credible sources? And if Arsenal did make a bid it was almost certainly a buy now pay later deal by spreading payments and the offer was significantly below Leipzig’s valuation of the player.
Of the players Arsenal bought and by selling players like Iwobe Arsenal maintained their actual spend to circa £45m which was always their strategy.

20th August 2019 at 3:44 pm #45968mav, do you prefer utd’s squad last year or this year? luiz and cabellos are cheap short term business, in short term strengthens arsenal more than james, but tierney and pepe is on par with bissaka and maguire imo and i honestly dont see a big difference.

20th August 2019 at 4:05 pm #45976defence was the priority though right mav? I shaw finds form you have by far the best backline since fergie and one that is set for years. cant do everything in one window, and your deadwood is harder to shift. arsenal addressed 4 positions with 2 quick fixes and 2 long term solutions, while utd addressed 3 positions with 3 long term solutions, thats not a big difference is it?

20th August 2019 at 4:40 pm #45978LD-United only addressed 2 issues m8,and either could still go wrong. Our deadwood is nigh impossible to ship out, nobody in their righ mind will pay £160k p/w for Rojo, now would they? Shaw will too need replacing,I feel.Pogba wants Real Madrid.and we need another striker.Even though Lindelof is better than Jones,Smalling,Bailly and Rojo,he too is not good enough for a team challenging for top honours.I fear.
